Educational Technology Conferences From: C R Wright <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, 10 May 2019 8:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Educational Technology & Education Conferences, #41, June to December 2019. Clayton R. Wright Dear Colleague, Attached is the 41st version of the Educational Technology and Education Conference List. The events for May and June 2019 have been updated since distribution of the previous list. As it is impossible to note every legitimate conference that is planned, this is a SELECTED list of professional development opportunities. It is prudent to take the time to conduct your own due diligence for any events you want to attend or submit a paper to. Information on the list was accurate on the distribution date. When you view the list, information may have changed – such as the dates and venue –and some may have been cancelled. Dates often change by one or two days and this can affect your flight and hotel arrangements. When I assemble the list, I need to quickly discern whether an event is legitimate and/or quality focused. The events may be held to attract papers which people plagiarize (and then publish the papers in their local language and receive academic or scientific credit) and/or to gather funds and offer little in return. These conferences may also use the same "keynote" speakers from year to year, indicate that the names and titles of those of the program committee are pending (but regardless of when I return to the web site, the program committee members' names, institutional affiliation, and e-mail addresses are still pending), list people on their site without a way of contacting them, promise to publish submitted papers for a fee (this fee can amount to several hundred dollars), charge a low fee for attendees but a higher fee for presenters, and/or have initial query forms that require too much detailed personal information (these can be used to steal your identity). And, events maybe organized and/or sponsored by bogus organizations. Obviously, I cannot guarantee nor do I claim that all the events on the conference list are legitimate. But, each time I compile the list, I examine a group of conferences very carefully. When you see events listed on conference databases on which people can add their own information, you might want to be a little cautious. Seriously, do not waste your time and effort submitting papers or registering for questionable events. ALWAYS check a conference website, particularly the organization behind it, carefully. As some organizations are moving to use an acronym without explaining somewhere on their web page what it stands for, determining the focus of the organization and their professional development events can be difficult to decipher. The list is prepared as a professional courtesy. Do share the list with your colleagues. If you re-distribute or publish the list on the web, please retain my contact information on the list as that is one way people inform me about new events or tell me an event will no longer be offered. If you no longer want to receive the conference list, just send me an e-mail to that effect - no explanation is required, crwr77 at gmail.com. Best regards, Clayton P.S. Seriously, there are a few conference organizers and journal publishers who do not operate with your best interests in mind. “A federal judge has ordered journal publisher and conference organizer Srinubabu Gedela and his companies to pay more than $50.1 million to resolve Federal Trade Commission charges that they made deceptive claims to academics and researchers about the nature of their conferences and publications, and hid steep publication fees." The above quote was noted on the April 4, 2019 website of the American Federal Trade Commission: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2019/04/court- rules-ftcs-favor-against-predatory-academic-publisher-omics Further details about the case can be accessed at the aforementioned website. Wright, crwr77[at] gmail.com 2 Educational Technology and Education Conferences for June to December 2019, Edition #41 Prepared by Clayton R. Wright, crwr77 at gmail.com, May 11, 2019 The 41st edition of the conference list covers selected professional development opportunities that primarily focus on the use of technology in educational settings and on teaching, learning, and educational administration. Only listings until December 2019 are most complete as dates, locations, or Internet addresses (URLs) were not available for a number of events held after that date. In order to protect the privacy of individuals, only URLs are used in the listing as this enables readers of the list to obtain event information without submitting their e-mail addresses. A significant challenge during the assembly of this list is incomplete or conflicting information on websites and the lack of a link between conference websites from one year to the next. An explanation for the content and format of the list can be found at http://newsletter.alt.ac.uk/2011/08/why- distribute-documents-in-ms-word-or-openoffice-for-an-international-audience/. A Word or an OpenOffice format is used to enable people with limited or high-cost Internet access to find a conference that is congruent with their interests or obtain conference abstracts or proceedings. Consider using the “Find” tool under Microsoft Word’s “Edit” tab or similar tab in OpenOffice to locate the name of a particular conference, association, city, or country. If you enter the country “Australia” or place, such as “Hong Kong” in the “Find” tool, all conferences that occur in Australia or Hong Kong will be highlighted. Or, enter the word “research” or “assessment”. (Note that key words such as “research”, “assessment” or “MOOCs” may not be present in the conference title, yet these topics could be discussed during a particular conference.) Then, “cut and paste” a list of suitable events for your colleagues. Please note that events, dates, titles, and locations may change and some events may be cancelled. Thus, CHECK the specific conference website not only for basic information, but to assure yourself that the conference is legitimate. Just as there is an increasing number of predatory or fake journals, there is also an increase in the number of conferences that are not quality-focused. Check your “gut” – if it doesn’t feel quite right, perhaps more checking is in order. Take the time to conduct your own due diligence for any events you want to attend or submit a paper to. To garner the most from a conference, this article by Amy Strage may be helpful: The Conference Notebook. You may also find this article useful: How to Facilitate a Conference Session by Garrett Richards. All Web addresses were verified at the time of publication. No liability is assumed for any errors that may have been introduced inadvertently during the assembly of this FREE conference list. Kindly retain the contact information when you re-distribute the list or mount it on the web as that is how I receive updates. crw ****************** May 15, 2019 National Future Work Summit: Skills Today, For Work Tomorrow. • Nassau Sound Morphological Changes
preprint – Proceedings of the 2003 National Conference on Beach Preservation Technology, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Morphological Changes at Nassau Sound, Northeast Florida, U.S.A. Albert E. Browder, Ph.D., P.E., and William A. Hobensack Olsen Associates, Inc. 4438 Herschel St. Jacksonville, FL 32210 ABSTRACT Nassau Sound is a broad, unstabilized tidal inlet located between Amelia Island and Little Talbot Island in Northeast Florida at the southern end of the Sea Island Chain. The Sound, along with Ft. George Inlet to the south, exist in a region demarcated and heavily influenced by substantial jetty installations at the Entrances to the St. Mary’s and St. John’s Rivers. Significant changes in the shape and position of the Sound have occurred over the last century, predominantly in response to the interruption of littoral supply caused by the St. Mary’s River Entrance jetties and the stabilizing influence of the north jetty at St. John’s River Entrance. In addition to the overall decrease in the sediment supply, another effect of these jettied entrances is the “backing up” of the tidal entrances as they attempt to migrate north against the direction of net littoral drift. These changes have placed increasing erosional pressure on the southern end of Amelia Island, prompting coastal engineering action to protect valuable resources along a State Park and adjacent privately held lands. INTRODUCTION Nassau Sound separates Nassau County and Duval County in Northeast Florida at the mouth of the Amelia and Nassau Rivers (Figure 1). Amelia Island to the north extends almost 14 miles to St. Mary’s Entrance at the Florida/Georgia border.

A General Account of Coinduction Up-To ∗ Filippo Bonchi Daniela Petrişan Damien Pous Jurriaan Rot May 2016 Abstract Bisimulation up-to enhances the coinductive proof method for bisimilarity, providing efficient proof techniques for checking properties of different kinds of systems. We prove the soundness of such techniques in a fibrational setting, building on the seminal work of Hermida and Jacobs. This allows us to systematically obtain up-to techniques not only for bisimilarity but for a large class of coinductive predicates modeled as coalgebras. The fact that bisimulations up to context can be safely used in any language specified by GSOS rules can also be seen as an instance of our framework, using the well-known observation by Turi and Plotkin that such languages form bialgebras.

  • GAMING GLOBAL a Report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with Assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner
GAMING GLOBAL A report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner I Executive Summary The Gaming Global report explores the games environment in: five EU countries, • Finland • France • Germany • Poland • UK three non-EU countries, • Brazil • Russia • Republic of Korea and one non-European region. • East Asia It takes a culturally-focused approach, offers examples of innovative work, and makes the case for British Council’s engagement with the games sector, both as an entertainment and leisure sector, and as a culturally-productive contributor to the arts. What does the international landscape for gaming look like? In economic terms, the international video games market was worth approximately $75.5 billion in 2013, and will grow to almost $103 billion by 2017. In the UK video games are the most valuable purchased entertainment market, outstripping cinema, recorded music and DVDs. UK developers make a significant contribution in many formats and spaces, as do developers across the EU. Beyond the EU, there are established industries in a number of countries (notably Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand) who access international markets, with new entrants such as China and Brazil moving in that direction. Video games are almost always categorised as part of the creative economy, situating them within the scope of investment and promotion by a number of governments. Many countries draw on UK models of policy, although different countries take games either more or less seriously in terms of their cultural significance. The games industry tends to receive innovation funding, with money available through focused programmes.

  • Redeveloping the Distillery District, Toronto
Place Differentiation: Redeveloping the Distillery District, Toronto by Vanessa Kirsty Mathews A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Geography University of Toronto © Copyright by Vanessa Kirsty Mathews 2010 Place Differentiation: Redeveloping the Distillery District, Toronto Doctor of Philosophy Vanessa Kirsty Mathews, 2010 Department of Geography University of Toronto Abstract What role does place differentiation play in contemporary urban redevelopment processes, and how is it constructed, practiced, and governed? Under heightened forms of interurban competition fueled by processes of globalization, there is a desire by place- makers to construct and market a unique sense of place. While there is consensus that place promotion plays a role in reconstructing landscapes, how place differentiation operates – and can be operationalized – in processes of urban redevelopment is under- theorized in the literature. In this thesis, I produce a typology of four strategies of differentiation – negation, coherence, residue, multiplicity – which reside within capital transformations and which require activation by a set of social actors. I situate these ideas via an examination of the redevelopment of the Gooderham and Worts distillery, renamed the Distillery District, which opened to the public in 2003. Under the direction of the private sector, the site was transformed from a space of alcohol production to a space of cultural consumption. The developers used a two pronged approach for the site‟s redevelopment: historic preservation and arts-led regeneration. Using a mixed method approach including textual analysis, in-depth interviews, visual analysis, and site observation, I examine the strategies used to market the Distillery as a distinct place, and the effects of this marketing strategy on the valuation of art, history, and space.
