The Fairgrounds administration office is closed weekends, legal holidays and daily from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Chris Young is an American country music artist. In 2006, he was declared the winner of the television program Nashville Star, a singing competition which aired on the USA Network. After winning the competition, Chris was signed to RCA Records Nashville and released his self-titled debut album that same year. It produced two singles on Hot Country Songs: “Drinkin' Me Lonely” and “You're Gonna Love Me”. A second album, “The Man I Want to Be”, was released September 1, 2009. It included the singles “Voices”, “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)”, and the title track, which all went to number one. Young's third album, “Neon”, produced two more number ones in “Tomorrow” and “You” in 2011 as well as the Top 20 hit “I Can Take It from There” in 2012. Its follow-up, 2013's “A.M.”, produced the Top 5 single “Aw Naw” and “Who I Am With You.” Chris Young’s website is http://chrisyoungcountry.com/. Courtney Cole will open the show with a 30-minute acoustic set. Courtney was on CMT’s Next Superstar. Psalm 19:14 Last year, in the midst of Lent, our world completely changed. Schools, businesses, and life seemed to halt. The Lenten disciplines we practiced for years took a dramatic turn, we cancelled in-person worship, and overnight we shifted to live-streaming worship. The world we live in today is very different than it was last year. We have quickly learned that we have little control in our world. When everything is shifting and raging around us it can be very difficult to hold onto something solid. Yet, we are reminded in Psalm 46 much wisdom in times of certainty. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea (Psalm 46:1-3). As a new year has come, and as seasons continue to pass, we discover that we are approaching another season of Lent. It is comforting to have rhythms and seasons. Lent can provide a helpful rhythm in the midst of chaos. Lent is a season that provides preparation and study, and a rhythm of prayer and fasting. According to the prophet Isaiah, the fast God desires the most is to lift the burden of bondage, feed the hungry, house the homeless, clothe the naked and share sympathy (Isaiah 58:6-7).

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.

If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style.
