Journalists wrote about it at the time, many people who were involved wrote about it in the immediate years that followed, and historians have tried to put it all together. The issues of foreign policy at the strategic level and the military operations that took place in this period have been especially well covered. However, the question of military strategic alternatives in this important era of British foreign policy has been less studied. -

A Fairey Swordfish similar to those used by Torrens- Spence NI Naval air ace’s lead role in sinking three battleships Northern Ireland - Service in the Royal Navy - In Remembrance Issue 33 Page !2 On the night of 11/11/1940, Michael Torrens- Spence DSO DSC DFC (Gr), piloted one of the 21 Swordfish "Stringbag" aircraft from the carrier Illustrious which flew off in two waves to mount one of the most daring naval air raids ever attempted. Two squadrons of Fleet Air Arm (FAA) torpedo- bombers from the aircraft-carrier HMS Illustrious – Nos 815 and 819 – and two from HMS Eagle – Nos 813 and 824 – attacked the Italian fleet as it lay at anchor in Taranto harbour. A total of 21 Fairey Swordfish aircraft took part in the operation, codenamed Judgement. All the planes flew from Illustrious since Eagle had been damaged in action off Calabria. # # The Swordfish flew off in two waves and achieved complete surprise. Three battleships, Conte di Cavour, Caio Duilio and Italia (previously Littorio) were sunk at their moorings. This reduced the battleship strength of the Regia Marina (the Italian Royal Navy) by half. Conte di Cavour was never to see action again although both Caio Duilio and Italia were raised and repaired. The survivors were transferred to less exposed bases which also reduced their effectiveness. Captain Michael Torrens-Spence destroyers were also damaged as was the oil storage depot. -

Introduction This is a book about HMS EAGLE for those who served in her, but many others will read it: wives, parents, sweethearts and friends. To those who do, may I suggest that you concentrate on reading between the lines. If you do this you will recognise at once the labour of love which the compilation of this book entailed. You will also recognise that here is the last saga of a Great Ship, prepared to fight if needed, prepared to aid anyone in distress, prepared to represent her country honourably on all occasions and in all parts of the world. In the many photographs you can meet the men of EAGLE, no less a band of brothers than the men of Nelson's ships. Between the lines in this book, with its frequent understatement, you will find an anatomy of the Royal Navy revealed in the character, courage, fortitude, humour and kindliness of EAGLE's officers and men. EDITOR'S NOTE - We regret that this souvenir book is in `paperback' form, but by sacrificing hard covers we have been able to include a lot more material than would otherwise have been possible with the money available. Should you wish for a copy bound in boards, then, it is quite easy to get this done by any bookbinder - it would not be very expensive. (For those of you in possession of the book of the first half of the commission, from 5 March 1969, the two could be bound together.) PROCUREMENT Generating A Carrier Strike Capability: People are Still Central The UK Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers will give the Navy force projection at sea and ashore. But according to a National Audit Office report, there are limited suitably qualified and experienced personnel to operate the new carriers in time for development of the capability before 2020. By Pete Ito and Peter Antill ince the first operational aircraft carriers appeared during the S First World War, they have become increasingly important to the major naval powers due to, firstly, their inherent ability to provide both offensive and defensive capabilities to a naval task force, and secondly, their ability to support amphibious operations and the projection of military power ashore. Once a country achieves such a capability, it is usually reluctant to lose it, with several countries either having brought new ships into service in recent years or, in the case of the UK and the US, having ongoing carrier replacement programmes. By analysing the most recent National Audit Office (NAO) report, we will look at the UK’s efforts to update its carrier strike capability with the CVF/Queen Elizabeth class programme, along with the problems and issues still encountered, especially as they relate to ensuring the right quality and quantity of personnel.
