SEPTEMBER 2019

Presidents’ Message: The bocce and croquet party at the Adlers, a new event for the SNN, was a real success and looks to become an annual event. Many thanks to Annie and Prentice. The Walking Group is responding to the EEE/West Nile situation. Due to the recent news about the potential for contacting a disease from mosquitoes, Ron and Candice Murphy think it would be best to quit hiking for a while. The Walking Group will restart when the weather gets cooler.

Also, this month, Wade Sayer gives us a submission to our Memories section. Quite a memory. Where were you in mid-August 1969? The long-awaited Profile of Rosie Holcombe is still a work in progress. SEPTEMBER ON THE CAPE: Yeah! Kit and Mike Sullivan IN MEMORIAM

Jocelyne Baillargeon passed away Sunday evening, August 25th. She had put up a gallant and courageous fight against cancer for over three years. William, her husband and soulmate, was at her side. Jocelyne and William joined Sandwich Newcomers about five years ago. They were living in Venice, Florida at their winter home when they noticed Margaret and Vic Mankiewicz’s Cape Cod license plates. Introductions were made and they were surprised to learn Vic and Margaret were neighbors in Sandwich. Margaret and Vic urged them to join Newcomers when they returned later in May. And upon their return they did just that and became active over the following years in numerous activities while here in the summer and fall. All of us began to know this fun-loving couple who enjoyed friends, concerts, golf, book groups and all that our club and the Cape have to offer. Jocelyne had a wonderful laugh and an infectious humor. We are all so happy that she became a part of our group. She also has left a legacy as a brilliant and loving teacher who changed the lives of so many of the children who were fortunate to have her as a teacher. William is planning a Celebration of her life on Sunday, October 20, at their home in East Sandwich. Details will be announced closer to the date. We will miss her terribly but know that she is at peace.

MEMORIES That Farm So Long Ago

We parked our cars in a field and followed the crowd, headed to the woods. We pitched tents and unloaded our stuff and then left it all behind. No Keys, no locks. We entered the woods as city folks with plans and ambitions, goals and ideas. Before we could stop or hesitate, the magic was upon us. Twinkling lights in the treetops, the tinkling wind chimes in the boughs, colored chains of beads and strobing colors filled the woods. We slowed to a stroll, greeted by men and women dressed in tie-dye, fringe things, cowboy hats and sandaled feet. They were stoned, smiling and singing, quietly, nicely they reached out to us. We stopped and talked. “Yeah, man,” was what they said. “Where ya from, man?” ”Heavy, man” “Love, man.” They were going nowhere but glad to bring us along with them. Hog Farm said their flower painted, day-glow school bus. My friends and I wanted to linger but the woods beckoned us on. More twinkling lights, glitter and gleaming candles, drums and soft guitars, children of god dancing in circles, welcome to “a new place”. We paused to dance along with a new part of the universe. Our straight ways, plans and goals were left on the ground as we smiled forward. The candles and incense faded as we walked, bright lights ahead. The crowd milled, seeming to not want to leave the noise quiet of the magic woods. A long wide path led us up the hill. The path was defined by long aisles of porta- potties, more than anyone had ever seen in one place. An electric crackle and pop was in the air, someone blowing into a live mike. The crowd moved ahead through the porta- potties and up the hill. At last we crested the long path, noticed more children of god giving ‘quiet assistance’ to the many. They pointed here or there; it didn’t seem to make much difference. More people than we had ever seen in one place, sitting quietly in that natural grassy bowl. A giant wooden stage at the bottom of the hill with tall light stands on either side, a gentle voice saying, “please don’t climb the light stands”, and “be careful”, the brown acid is bad tripping a lot of people. The voice waved it’s gentle and calming touch across the crowd, who sat quietly smoking happy. “and now, this is a free concert, man. The producers have opened the gates to let Everyone come in. They are gonna take a beating, but they want everyone to hear the music, man,” and “the traffic is backed up on the New York Thruway for twenty miles. We are now the third largest city in the state of New York, Man” was first: “Freedom, Freedom, Freedom,” then Country Joe MacDonald; “One-Two-Three What are We Fightin For?”, The Loving Spoonful’s , , , , “Coming into Los Angeles”, bringing in a couple of Keys, The Gigantic light show behind them as it turned dark. Joints passing up, down and sideways along the ragged rows of strangers sharing. All Music lovers. We were army guys with short military haircuts having fun with guys from ‘the Village”; hair down to their waist, dancing, moving, getting stoned. A little rain, Melanie sang it away, , Moby Grape, , and More went on until Four or Five in the morning. “Hey, Man.” We made it back to the tents somehow and crashed. ______Anne and Wade Sayer at last month at with Caroline Gottlieb, their niece and a producer at the Today Show, and Harry Smith, NBC senior correspondent

______Saturday, we got back to the bowl and got a place to sit among the four hundred thousand, wandered around a bit, had some leftover food. Spread our blankets and listened to the blessed noise. : “Going Up the Country”, Credence Clearwater Revival, and her new band, played all of Tommy and more. got people on their feet in the middle of the night, “Dance to the Music” Boom’ Shaka Lacka Lacka Boom Shacka Lacka – I wanta take you Higher. The sang the “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love” to make the sun rise. We couldn’t stay for the final day; our sense of responsibility overcame our desire to hear more. A four-hour drive home and work the next day. We left at noon and drove back to our lives in Washington and the army. But we were changed people. Anne and I started a new life. A few weeks later, we marched together to the White House, carrying candles to protest the war in Vietnam. We never felt better or cleaner. W D Sayer Activities
