Clan Macpherson, 1215 - 1550 How the Macphersons acquired their Clan Lands and Independence Reynold Macpherson, 20 January 2011 Not for sale, free download available from www.reynoldmacpherson.ac.nz Clan Macpherson, 1215 to 1550 How the Macphersons acquired their traditional Clan Lands and Independence Reynold Macpherson Introduction The Clan Macpherson Museum (see right) is in the village of Newtonmore, near Kingussie, capital of the old Highland district of Badenoch in Scotland. It presents the history of the Clan and houses many precious artifacts. The rebuilt Cluny Castle is nearby (see below), once the home of the chief. The front cover of this chapter is the view up the Spey Valley from the memorial near Newtonmore to the Macpherson‟s greatest chief; Col. Ewan Macpherson of Cluny of the ‟45. Clearly, the district of Badenoch has long been the home of the Macphersons. It was not always so. This chapter will make clear how Clan Macpherson acquired their traditional lands in Badenoch. It means explaining why Clan Macpherson emerged from the Old Clan Chattan, was both a founding member of the Chattan Confederation and yet regularly disputed Clan Macintosh‟s leadership, why the Chattan Confederation expanded and gradually disintegrated and how Clan Macpherson gained its property and governance rights. The next chapter will explain why the two groups played different roles leading up to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The following chapter will identify the earliest confirmed ancestor in our family who moved to Portsoy on the Banff coast soon after the battle and, over the decades, either prospered or left in search of new opportunities. -

Bruce Boehrer has an important essay on this topic, in which he argues that an ideal “wedded chastity” emerges as a strategy for promoting marriage and procreation in a society that has traditionally idealized celibacy and virginity; “indeed,” he continues, “at heart the concept of wedded chastity is little more than the willful destabi- lizing of an inconvenient signifier, calculated to serve the procreative demands of an emergent political economy” (557). 4. A Collection of Ballads
A COLLECTION OF BALLADS INTRODUCTION When the learned first gave serious attention to popular ballads, from the time of Percy to that of Scott, they laboured under certain disabilities. The Comparative Method was scarcely understood, and was little practised. Editors were content to study the ballads of their own countryside, or, at most, of Great Britain. Teutonic and Northern parallels to our ballads were then adduced, as by Scott and Jamieson. It was later that the ballads of Europe, from the Faroes to Modern Greece, were compared with our own, with European Märchen, or children’s tales, and with the popular songs, dances, and traditions of classical and savage peoples. The results of this more recent comparison may be briefly stated. Poetry begins, as Aristotle says, in improvisation. Every man is his own poet, and, in moments of stronge motion, expresses himself in song. A typical example is the Song of Lamech in Genesis— “I have slain a man to my wounding, And a young man to my hurt.” Instances perpetually occur in the Sagas: Grettir, Egil, Skarphedin, are always singing. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson introduces “The Song of the Sword of Alan,” a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lullabies, like the lullaby of Danae in Simonides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture, the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks. -

Lordship of the Isles The Lordship of the Isles comprised a varying extent of land at different times, but can be roughly approximated to Argyll. It included the Hebrides (Skye and Ross from 1438), Knoydart, Ardnamurchan, and the Kintyre peninsula. The Lordship developed under descendants of the Vikings, mixed with Gaels and Scots. Its first great historical leader is often said to be Somerled who ruled in the 12th century. It was a maritime and seafaring kingdom and as such its heraldry always contained a galley. It was effectively in the 12th and early 13th centuries an independent kingdom within Scotland. We should, however, be careful in Illustration 2: Battle of Harlaw monument. using the term Scotland here. Singing the Child Ballads In this column Rosaleen Gregory continues her composite, said to be collected from “various journey through the Child ballads in her own sources”. The tune is from Alexander Keith’s repertoire, and calls for readers’ submissions of selection from Gavin Greig’s collecting, Last alternative versions that they sing, or of other ballads Leaves of the Traditional Ballads and Ballad in the Child canon that she does not perform. The Cruel Mother, # 20 Rosaleen writes: My version is called “Down by the Greenwood Sheath and Knife, # 16 Sidey”, and is mainly that noted by Robert and Henry Hammond from Mrs. Case, at Sydling St. Nicholas, The text I sing is Child’s version A, which was Dorset, in September 1907. The Hammonds collected reprinted from William Motherwell, ed., Minstrelsy two other versions of “The Cruel Mother” in Dorset Ancient and Modern (Glasgow: John Wylie, 1827). in 1907: one from Mrs. Russell at Upwey in The ballad was noted by Motherwell in February February, and the other from Mrs. Bowring at Cerne 1825 from an informant named Mrs. King, who lived Abbas in September. Milner and Kaplan appear to in the parish of Kilbarchan. The tune is from James have collated the text from these three (and perhaps Johnson, ed., The Scots Musical Museum, Consisting other) sources, and they took the tune from that of Six Hundred Scots Songs, 2 Vols. (Edinburgh: printed by Henry Hammond in the Journal of the James Johnson, 1787-1803). -

The Gilchrist Collection
The Gilchrist Collection This collection consists of correspondence, songs, tunes, and miscellaneous materials that belonged to Anne Geddes Gilchrist, a long-time member of the Folk-Song Society and then the English Folk Dance and Song Society. Gilchrist served the societies in many ways—as vice-president, as annotator and tune expert extraordinaire for the journals, and as ‘Aunt Anne,’ a mentor to many people in the societies and in the scholarly folklore community. The items range in date from 1894 to 1951. When the collection was given to the EFDSS after Gilchrist’s death, Margaret Dean-Smith was the librarian at the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library. She began sorting and categorizing the papers, labeling the envelopes with the contents. However, whether that project was interrupted or just never finished, the notes on many of the envelopes do not match what is in the envelopes. Also, although Dean-Smith did seem to be trying to put together physically those items that were on the same topic, often the same song or same subject appears in several places in the collection. The index must be used in order to find all relevant materials on a topic, song, or person. AGG = Anne Geddes Gilchrist LEB = Lucy E.
