A Return To The Oikos: The Transformation Of The Home In Modern Spain Abstract Urban space has increasingly become a topic that has spawned intellectual debate across academic disciplines. In Spain, the cityscape, from the nineteenth century onward, has provided a pivotal backdrop for understanding the configuration of social networks represented in cultural production. At the same time, the city has always been a foundational site of contention: while communities gathered and formed in the realm of the urban center, spaces that consequently settled in the periphery breached deeper notions of exclusion. One of the most depicted spaces of such exclusion has been the urban home. A Return to the Oikos: The Transformation of the Home in Modern Spain considers cultural production of the mid-nineteenth through mid-twentieth century in Spain that analyzes the home as the exception to the visible domain of politics and labor and, simultaneously, the condition of the production of these categories. This four- chapter study argues that figures such as the mother, the prostitute, the unemployed hetero-normative male, the housekeeper, and the cook bring to bear the invisible functions of capitalist production and national construction that permit and maintain the bourgeois home and material culture in modern Spain. A Return to the Oikos historically transverses the Revolution of 1868, la Gloriosa, the Restoration (1875-1923), Primo de Rivera's regime (1923-1930), the Second Republic (1931-1939), The Civil War (1936-1939), and the isolating years of hunger under the Francoist dictatorship. In doing so, it posits that the home space and the domesticated figures that maintain this space are central and critical components to the possibilities of urbanization, modernization, and ideological shifts, specifically in the Spanish national imaginary from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Through analysis of their representation in literature and film, A Return ot the Oikos places the home at the center of a general social conflict in the larger period of Spanish modernization as deeply intercalated in economic and political fabric. Núm. 11, 2013, pp. 149-165 ISSN: 1989-6883 Antecedentes del Cincopuntismo Francisco Gago Vaquero1 Introducción En el año 1965 se producen cuatro reuniones entre dirigentes del sindicato vertical y militantes (o ex-militantes) de la Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT.). Ambos bandos llegan a un principio de acuerdo plasmado en cinco puntos consensuados. Resulta sumamente llamativo que militantes de bandos enfrentados durante la guerra civil, de 1936 a 1939, se sentasen a negociar y además llegasen a un principio de acuerdo. Si a eso se añade que los representantes de la CNT habían cumplido largas condenas de prisión por su militancia cenetista o por su colaboración con el bando republicano durante la guerra, resulta aún más sorprendente el entendimiento entre ambos bandos. Si además se tiene en cuenta que los dirigentes sindicales eran falangistas (o simpatizantes falangistas) y se considera a la CNT. como organización libertaria, llegaremos a la conclusión de que los dos bandos representados en las negociaciones abarcaban a extremos opuestos del espectro ideológico socio-político (es perfectamente admisible considerar a los falangistas como representantes de la extrema derecha y a los cenetistas como representantes de la extrema izquierda). En este caso, la CNT no debe ser considerada como una organización ácrata sino como una organización sindical abierta a diversas influencias. No.1 pp. 55–77 Copyright © 1999 SAGE Publications London Thousand Oaks New Delhi RE-ENTERING ELECTORAL POLITICS Reputation and Party System Change in Spain and Greece Kerstin Hamann and Barbara Sgouraki-Kinsey ABSTRACT This article examines change in the Greek and Spanish party systems between their pre- and post-authoritarian periods. While the Greek party system displayed substantial continuity, the Spanish system showed considerable change. We connect continuity in party structure with length of interruption of competitive electoral politics. Our argument relies on the idea of reputation to explain why Spanish party leaders were far less constrained in moving their parties along the policy space than their Greek counterparts. Political parties in Spain had less reputation for established policy positions than Greek parties. Our argument and its implications are formally derived from a model developed by Bowler. We evaluate some alternative explanations and conclude that reputation is a factor accounting for variation in party system change in these two cases. At the time of the transition party leaders were presented with different opportunities to redefine their respective parties’ policy positions. The intention of this thesis is not to define fascism. Rather, it is to suggest that looking at fascism’s goals and aspirations might reveal under-examined elements of fascism. This thesis shows that a useful way to analyse the ideology of fascism is through an examination of its ideals and goals, and by considering the nature of a hypothetical fascist utopia. The most common ways of examining fascism and attempting to isolate its core ideological features have been by considering it culturally, looking at the metaphysical and philosophical claims fascists made about themselves, or by studying fascist regimes, looking at the external features of fascist movements, parties and governments. In existing studies there is an unspoken middle ground, where fascism could be examined by considering practical issues in the abstract and by postulating what a fascist utopia would be like.

    Foreign correspondents in Francoist Spain (1945-1975) Tobias Reckling This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. March 2016 1 Abstract This thesis will examine the foreign press corps in Francoist Spain from 1945 until 1975. After the end of the Second World War, the Franco regime was internationally isolated as a result of its ties with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. However, the dictatorship returned to the international stage during the 1950s and managed to survive on the margins of the Cold War world order until the death of Franco in 1975. Throughout these 30 years and while never loosening its dictatorial control over Spain, the Franco regime continuously tried to improve its international position and image beyond mere toleration. Foreign correspondents were working at the centre of this balancing act. Against this backdrop, this thesis has two central aims. First, it will examine the regime’s policy towards the foreign press. The thesis will show that the Francoist authorities never fully accepted the foreign press corps’ work within Spain and tried to exercise control over the foreign press corps until the end of the regime. Throughout the regime’s internal and external development, however, the Francoist authorities adapted the means they employed. At the same time, conflicting interests and strategies within the Franco regime shaped its policy towards the foreign press. This thesis will further show that conflicts with correspondents partially had their roots in the importance of the foreign press, distributed within Spain, for the Spanish public in general and the political opposition in particular.

Per Aage Brandt Case Western Reserve University La Falange: The Structure of a Fascist Dream The text proposes a structural narrative reading of José Antonio Primo de Rivera’s falangist discourse and shows how its thinking is based on spatial and dynamic imagination and a particularly strong sacrificial nationalist motif. It further suggests that the symbolic dimension in its nationalism constitutes a driving emotional force to be found in all nationalisms. Falangism was a religious version of fascism, famous for becoming the official ideology of Francoist Spain; but it shared with all militant national political forms of thinking the emotionally compelling mystique : the feeling of a spiritual essence and force emanating from a beloved land and conveying existential identity and value to its subjects, thus justifying and calling for committed violent and sacrificial acts that override ordinary systems of lawful behavior. Keywords : falangism, fascism, narratology, nationalism, social cognition, sacrifice, death. We may believe that political thinking is an argumentative genre that calculates truths within a quasi-axiomatic system of propositions. However, its readiness to animate polemical discourse and emotional rhetoric in general shows that this genre of social cognition, interpretation, and imagination comes with built-in agentive roles and identity-stimulating subjective appeals that rather would suggest a story structure – a narrative constitution – from which arguments can be extracted as episodic elements. In contemporary times, Spain experienced a cruel Civil War (1936-39) and a long period of dictatorship under General Franco’s rule (1939-75). At the death of the dictator, the opposition mobilized around left-right cleavages as well as around several territorially- based nationalist movements that had been repressed by Francoism. The moment of constitutional transition, which would last from 1977 to 1979, arose from an alliance between moderate reform factions in the elites of the old dictatorship, supported by the new King, with opposition elites.
