Completed in 2013, and drawing on over two years of fieldwork with people who use, design, manufacture, and prescribe augmentative alternative communications (AAC) devices, this dissertation examines the impacts of AAC on interaction and intersubjectivity. Combining ii ethnographic methods with forms of close discourse analysis, the chapters explore how the architecture of interaction responds to the nuances of mediated forms of communication, and how individuals experience interactional phenomena of intersubjectivity and ‘voice’. The dissertation begins by looking at the ways that augmented and mouth-speaking interlocutors comport themselves at various points in the unfolding of interaction. Combining insights from the fields of conversation analysis, discourse analysis, linguistic anthropology, and phenomenology, the early chapters explore the role of temporality in the creation and maintenance of intersubjectivity. By showing how and when interlocutors experience breakdowns in the tight temporal attunement and sense of collective engagement that characterize face-to-face conversation, the first part of this dissertation explores the impact of AAC technology design on the structures of interaction and the experience of personhood. The second section of this dissertation interrogates the notion of ‘voice’. The chapters in this section examine the how augmented communicators are able to embody a voice that is being produced by a mechanical device, located outside of their physical body, and how individuals with different forms of speech disability relate to the synthetic voice differently, thereby revealing a great deal about their tacit understandings of their bodies and the world around them. By examining communication through and despite mediating forms, this dissertation expands understandings of the nature of intersubjectivity. Moreover, by bringing divergent fields’ perspectives to bear on the topic of interaction within the context of disability, the dissertation provides new ways of approaching communication, suggesting a new model for understanding the experience of sociality. iii The Dissertation of Christopher Robert Engelke is approved. Modernly, the terms “low fantasy” and “high fantasy” have begun to be defined as the subgenres of fantasy. These two terms have been debated, some writers and/or readers having slightly different opinions on what each encompasses. In general, low fantasy is defined as a world in which there are fantastical elements, but the story takes place within the world we live. High fantasy, on the other hand, is a world imagined by the author, entirely separate from our world (though there are various things within these other worlds that may resemble ours). The first short story in this series, “What a Life”, is a modern fairytale that represents the more tradition fantasy genre.

BRIGHAM She's on a jump-out squad all night; she's saving her strength. INT. UNDERGROUND GARAGE - DAY Gray cement walls blur past as the panel van descends a circular ramp to a lower level. The back doors open from the inside and Starling is the first one out - well-rested and alert - hoisting down her equipment bag. One of the DC policemen, the one whose girth and manner say he's in charge, watches the woman by the van slip into a Kevlar vest, drop a Colt .45 into a shoulder holster, and a .38 into an ankle holster. Nanami, our large, round, mostly gray cat, glanced at Chu-Chu with some irritation as he fell asleep on her flank. She slithered out from under him and hopped heavily off the sofa onto my stomach, where she dug for a moment with small, white-gloved paws, then settled. Chu-Chu remained asleep in his new position. The room was silent, except for his snoring, all of us motionless. It was a soft day outside, gray and drizzly and just a little chilly, which made the pinks and reds and magentas of the cherry blossoms at the window glow. The phone rang. I jumped, Anthy jumped, and Nanami levitated off my stomach. While Nanami licked her shoulder, Anthy and I gazed at the clanging thing with loathing. She resigned herself more quickly than I did, and answered. "Hello?" Even now, it was jarring. The shift from Japanese to English, I mean. Anthy had lifted the ban on Japanese at home years ago, during college, once she decided that my English was good enough.

This dissertation investigates the wounded and violated female body as the site for healing from and integration of individual and collective traumatic experiences. This four-chapter investigation draws from trauma theorists working in various disciplines, such as Cathy Caruth, Dori Laub, Shoshana Felman, Dominick LaCapra, Judith Lewis Herman, and Elaine Scarry, in order to establish the theoretical approaches to traumatic memory, testimony, and witnessing. Any theoretical exploration into the representation and articulation of trauma must include a return to the body as not just the site for pain, wounding, and separation of self from body and soul.
