OTHER WORLDLY GLIMPSES By Jordan Payeur An Honors Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Honors in The Department of English The School of Arts and Sciences Rhode Island College 2020 2 Author’s Note For my honors project, I decided to develop my series of short stories to reflect the different types of worlds that are built within the fantasy genre. Modernly, the terms “low fantasy” and “high fantasy” have begun to be defined as the subgenres of fantasy. These two terms have been debated, some writers and/or readers having slightly different opinions on what each encompasses. In general, low fantasy is defined as a world in which there are fantastical elements, but the story takes place within the world we live. High fantasy, on the other hand, is a world imagined by the author, entirely separate from our world (though there are various things within these other worlds that may resemble ours). The first short story in this series, “What a Life”, is a modern fairytale that represents the more tradition fantasy genre. -

Building upon previous scholarship regarding World War II and memory (Beidler, 1998; Wood, 2006; Bodnar, 2010; Ramsay, 2015), this dissertation analyzes key works including Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Greatest Generation (1998), The Thin Red Line (1998), Medal of Honor (1999), Band of Brothers (2001), Call of Duty (2003), and The Pacific (2010) in order to better understand the version of World War II promulgated by Stephen E. This is not a new phenomenon, however, as Nineteen Eighty-Four has had a unique impact on each of the generations that have read it, and the impact has stretched across racial, ethnic, political, and gender lines. This thesis project will examine the critical, popular, and scholarly reception of Nineteen Eighty-Four since its publication 1949. Reviewers’ and commentators’ references common ideas, themes, and settings from the novel will be tracked using narrative theory concepts in order to map out an understanding of how the interpretations of the novel changed over time relative to major events in both American and Pankowski 1 world history. -

Griffith May 2015 Examining Committee Members: Dr. Peter Logan, Advisory Chair, English Dr. Talissa Ford, English Dr. Therese Dolan, Art History Dr. Kate Thomas, English, Bryn Mawr Dr. Jill Rappoport, External Member, English, University of Kentucky ABSTRACT Nineteenth-century Britain experienced a confluence of a rapidly urbanizing physical environment, radical changes in the hierarchical relationships in society as well as in the natural sciences, and a nostalgic fascination with antiquities, especially gothic architecture. The realist novels of this period reflect this tension between dramatic social restructuring and a conservative impulse to remember and maintain the world as it has been. This dissertation focuses on the word structure to unpack the implications of these opposing forces, both for our understanding of the social structures that novels reflect, and the narrative structures that novels create. PANEL VAN - DAY Clarice Starling is dead, laid out in fatigues across a bench in the back of a ratty, rattling undercover van. Three other agents sit perched on the opposite bench, staring at her lifeless body. BURKE How can she sleep at a time like this? BRIGHAM She's on a jump-out squad all night; she's saving her strength. INT. UNDERGROUND GARAGE - DAY Gray cement walls blur past as the panel van descends a circular ramp to a lower level. As it straightens out, the view through the windshield reveals a gathering of men and vehicles - marked and unmarked DC police cars - and two black SWAT vans. The panel van - with Marcell's Crab House painted on its sides - pulls to a stop. The back doors open from the inside and Starling is the first one out - well-rested and alert - hoisting down her equipment bag. One of the DC policemen, the one whose girth and manner say he's in charge, watches the woman by the van slip into a Kevlar vest, drop a Colt .45 into a shoulder holster, and a .38 into an ankle holster. She straightens up, approaches the men and lays a street plan across the hood of one of their cars. STARLING All right, everyone, pay attention. Here's the layout - BOLTON Excuse me, I'm Officer Bolton, DC Police. STARLING Yes, I can see that from your uniform and badge, how do you do? BOLTON I'm in charge here. -
