Barbara and Frank 4th 4th of July Parade have again opened up their house for the festivities. This year Barbara has arranged for [Santa Barbara] chicken from Von’s as the meat course and Frank is mixing up a new drink surprise for 4th 4th of July Post-Parade us to try. As Barbara has been sick and in bed with a cough, I have been worried about Eats her over doing it but she says it will be ready!! [Santa Barbara] 15th Jalama Beach Run [Lompoc] The parade is scheduled to start at 1:00pm and we do not yet have exact line up location and timing. For those not driving in the parade you should plan to arrive at the August LoMonaco’s between 2:00 and 2:30 pm for drinks and appetizers. We want to have the July meeting combined 1st General Meeting with this event and will have our meeting before the meal is served. [Goleta] 19th Wings Over Camarillo During the month of June, we had the Avenue of the Giants Run to the Redwoods. Ed Clerkin scouted out the [Camarillo] stops, lodging, meal locations and activities. This was a big project and we want to give a special thanks to Ed for this great run. Ed’s guide book raised the bar for all of us for the future runs. Also during June, Peter September Mackins led us on a run to Vic Edelbrock’s facility in Torrance, CA. -

Whereas, North Carolina takes great pride in its position as the stock car racing capital of the United States and the world; and Whereas, North Carolina is the home of NASCAR, which staged its first sanctioned "purely stock car" race at the Charlotte Speedway on June 19, 1949; and Whereas, since that time, NASCAR and motorsports events have become and remain hugely popular with the people of North Carolina, with more than one million people attending motorsports events in North Carolina each year, thereby substantially enhancing the tourism industry in and economy of North Carolina; and Whereas, North Carolina currently hosts five NASCAR Winston Cup events, with two being held at the North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham and three at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, near Charlotte, and is thus the stock car racing capital of the world; and Whereas, these Winston Cup races materially affect North Carolina's economy, and the loss of any Winston Cup event would have a tremendous negative impact on jobs and tax revenues in the Rockingham and Charlotte areas and the tourism industry in North Carolina in general; and Whereas, North Carolina has established the William States Lee College of Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte which offers an undergraduate program concentrating on motorsports engineering; and -

Louise Smith July 31, 1916-April 15, 2006 Nationality: American Raced between 1946-1956 Origins: Louise Smith was born in Georgia and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, sharing a love of cars with her father and brothers. Her father William Duvall, a mechanic, embraced her initial interest and taught Smith how to drive when she was only four years old. During her first joy-ride, Smith was already behind the wheel of her father’s Model T when she realized she still didn’t know how to properly brake. The car finally came to a stop after crashing through the family chicken coop, and Louise survived the ordeal without a scratch. Throughout her teens, Smith worked in the local cotton mill as a weaver, attending school for only a few hours and then clocking in a 12-hour day at the mill. At the age of 19, she met Noah Smith, the owner of one of the largest automotive junkyards in the region, and they two were married in 1935. Noah’s success allowed Smith to leave her job at the mill and surround herself with customized cars and others who shared her love of machines. Early Influences: As a young woman, Smith was frequently seen speeding down Greenville’s roads, outrunning area police, and riding alongside moonshine runners. When Bill France, Sr. visited the Greenville-Pickens Speedway as a promoter in the 1940s, he was interested in supporting a female driver in the hope of gathering publicity and increasing track attendance. Locals mentioned Smith’s fast-driving reputation and France knew he had found a woman who could compete with the men then dominating the sport.
