The Spiny Buterfy Ray Rostral anomaly in a juvenile Spiny Gymnura altavela (Linnaeus, 1758) Butterfly Ray Gymnura altavela has an amphi-Atlantc distributon, (Linnaeus, 1758) (Elasmobranchii: and occurs in its eastern range ISSN 0974-7907 (Online) Myliobatiformes: Gymnuridae) from the ISSN 0974-7893 (Print) along the coasts of and Canary Islands Spain, over Morocco to , OPEN ACCESS the , Black Sea, Filip Osaer 1 & Krupskaya Narváez 2 , and the Canary Islands (Ebert & Stehmann 2013; Yokota 1,2 ElasmoCan, Asociación Canaria para la Investgación y Conservación et al. 2016). It has been assessed de los Elasmobranquios, 35001 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain 1 [email protected] (corresponding author), globally as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (Vooren 2 [email protected] et al. 2007) and as Critcally Endangered (Dulvy et al. 2016) for the European distributon. The frst record of an anomaly in this species was described by Narváez & epidermis from the ventral side (Image 1). The infated Osaer (2016) for an adult female observed in 2007 and peritoneal cavity of the individual may suggest a full 2008 in the northwest of the Island of Gran Canaria stomach and adapton to its abnormality for successful (Canary Islands, Spain). This observaton was also predaton (Image 1b). The species was identfed remarkable for its similarity, prominent in sex, shape, following the descriptons from Yokota et al. (2016). The locaton, and texture, with the partal lack of the disc in juvenile maturity phase was inferred from the reported way of the rostrum in the Long-tailed Buterfy Ray G. size ranges in neonates (34–39 cm disc width) for the poecilura from the western Indo-Pacifc (Suresh & Raf distributon of Syria (Alkusairy et al. 2014), and the 2012). maximum recorded disc width of 31.3 cm for embryos On 29 July 2017, an unusual juvenile female G. was inferred from the distributon of (Capapé et altavela (41cm disc width) was observed during a visual al. 1992). census at 10.9m depth and 220C water temperature The present communicaton is the frst record of this in the Special Area of Conservaton ‘Playa del Cabrón’ anomaly type in a juvenile G. altavela, and the second (ES7010053, 27.87090N & 15.38220W, Gran Canaria, instance reported in this species and in the Canary Islands. Canary Islands). The right pectoral fn was not fused to Both cases were observed in the island of Gran Canaria, the braincase, causing an opening in the anterior part of but in diferent regions (eastern versus northwestern) the disc from the rostral ridge to the posterior margin and with a 10-year tme lapse. In additon, they have of the eye and a free lobe. The epidermis pigmentaton similar morphologic aspects, with diferences limited to was absent at the proximal part of this lobe, presentng the extent in lack of the disc (posterior margin of the eye a similar appearance in colour and texture as the white versus posterior margin of the spiracle) and the opening

12280 Rostral anomaly in a Spiny Buterfy Ray Osaer & Narvaez

© Krupskaya Narváez and one an absent tp of the snout (Béarez et al. 2008). The low occurrence of reported anomalies in buterfy rays during the last decade in our study region and the survival of the afected individuals could suggest that these instances are not a priority conservaton concern at present. More studies, however, are required to beter understand the causes for such deformatons and to correctly assess this mater.
