Kappa TV Mojo Rising Season 2 Band Profiles KY-MANI MARLEY AND Kappa TV Mojo Rising Season 2 Band Profiles KY-MANI MARLEY AND KONFRONTATION BAND The Marley surname perpetuates Jamaican royalty, resonates worldwide recognition and represents the pioneer of a cultural, political and social revolution. Reggae Icon and Legend Bob Marley blessed the world with his timeless, brilliant and message filled sound which continues to inspire and influence audiences today. With such a living past, Bob Marleys conviction and passion for music unintentionally was passed to the lives of his offspring and has allowed the Marley name to remain relevant amongst the hierarchy of the reggae sound. Son of 'Bob Marley' Bob Marley and 'Table tennis' table tennis champion Anita Belnavis, Ky-mani Marley is the second youngest of Bob Marleys eleven children. Being exposed to an urban lifestyle, Ky-mani adopted the attitude that all people are equal no one is above or beneath him. This attitude has become the motto for the way he lives his life today. Humble. Soft-Spoken. Sincere. Loyal. Honest. Genuine. These are the makings of Ky-mani Marley. As a child, Ky-mani had no interest following in the footsteps of his world-famous father and was more inclined to play sports. However, the seed that was planted by Bobs legacy sprouted in 1997 when Ky-mani teamed up with hip-hop artist Pras of The Fugees and collaborated on Eddy Grants Electric Avenue. This would be the defining moment in Ky-manis journey which would lead him to pick up the torch his iconic father lit so many years ago. Remaining true to his Jamaican culture, Ky-manis fondness for all genres of music influences the work he creates. Ky-mani is an artist with no limits. Incorporating world music, hip-hop, blues, rock and a grass roots sound into his music, the end product is the pure representation of life for Ky- mani. The Ky-mani Marley sound is one that transcends cultural lines and prohibits him from being categorized as only a reggae artist. His raw, unadulterated, gruff sound captures the listener and reverberates the essence of Ky-manis life story. His new works will prove to be a blend of genres that will touch the inner-soul of each listener. Arts and the City International Conference Budapest, 23-24 May 2019 Booklet of Abstracts artsandthecity2019.wordpress.com Keynote Speakers BERNARDINE EVARISTO, writer, London (author of Lara, Soul Tourists and Blonde Roots, among other novels) “The Many Londons of Amazing London: The Capital as Muse & City of Experimentation for this Black Woman Writer” As a writer of fiction and verse fiction, London has been a muse in most of my eight books. I am constantly finding ways to narrativize it from multiple perspectives, and through different eras and generations, as well as creating imaginary versions of the capital city in two of my books where I invented parallel universes. In my talk I will investigate how London has manifested as a guiding light for my imagination, how my writing subverts the dominant narratives about the city today and in history, and how London’s rich multiculturalism presents never-ending possibilities for creativity and storytelling. ANDREW GIBSON, Royal Holloway, University of London “The City and the Historicity of Affect in European Art Cinema 1945-80” The city, the metropolis, the megalopolis is what is increasingly given us to think and think from. Cities are where we can pursue truth and reality. What exactly does the city, or, if you like, the planetary megalopolis gives us to think? For me, above all, a historical materialism; but a historical materialism that is sui generis, of its own kind, not to be confused with other historical materialisms, a historical materialism specifically of the city. On the one hand, self- evidently, cities are always material entities, cannot be otherwise.

Aesthetic Citizenship: Popular Culture, Migrant Youth, and the Making of 'World Class' Delhi Abstract Delhi has nearly doubled in population since the early 1990s due to in-migration (censusindia.gov, 2011). These migrants, like migrants around the world, strive to adapt to their new surroundings by producing themselves in ways which make them socially, economically, and politically viable. My project examines how recent international and intranational immigrant youth who have come to Delhi to partake in its economic possibilities and, in some cases, to escape political uncertainty, are utilizing globally circulating popular cultural forms to make themselves visible in a moment when the city strives to recast its image as a world class destination for roaming capital (Roy, 2011). I focus on two super diverse settlement communities in South Delhi to explore the citizenship making claims of immigrant youth who, to date, have been virtually invisible in academic and popular narratives of the city. Specifically, I follow three groups of ethnically diverse migrant youth from these two settlement communities as they engage with hip hop, a popular cultural form originating in Black American communities in the 1970s (Chang, 2006; Morgan, 2009; Rose, 1994).

(081) 5332572 e-mail: [email protected] HOPPING ON THE HYPE: DOUBLE ONTOLOGY OF (CONTEMPORARY) AMERICAN RAP MUSIC In a revealing interview with Elisabeth A. Frost, Harryette Mullen, one of the most enthralling African-American poets, tries to answer the question of contemporary black identity and authenticity, the search for which seems to the interviewer to be a rather “nostalgic gesture.” Mullen’s answer, the response of a literary figure who is-- at the same time-- a person living and teaching in Los Angeles and thus familiar with all the latest fads that black communities adopt, is full of concern for the inevitability of the changes that the global culture imposes on once unique identifying characteristics. Mullen observes that “part of what is tricky and difficult is wondering whether we even know what we believe about ourselves. So often we are performing, and we are paid for performing – we are surviving, assimilating, blending in. When are we ourselves? Beyond being either a credit or discredit to our race, who are we?” (Frost: 416). Mullen’s words, a shrouded lament for the disappearance of the singular and distinctive in favor of the global and homogenized, could easily be applied to the phenomenon which has soared from its Compton ragged origins to the riches of the luxurious corporate environment, turning poor boys with ghetto blasters into moguls of show business. Contemporary rap music has acquired in the course of a decade or so a double, triple, or even multiple ontology, capitalizing on its initial niche and vaguely ominous character and exchanging the message for endless permutations of the form.

THE JACKSONVILLE SYMPHONY RETURNS TO DAILY’S PLACE ALONGSIDE GRAMMY-WINNER WYCLEF JEAN “Do yourself a favor: get lose, have a ball, have fun.” – Wyclef Jean Jacksonville, FL (February 28, 2018) --- The Jacksonville Symphony returns to Daily’s Place for A Night of Symphonic Hip Hop. Produced by Live Nation Urban and TCG Entertainment, the concert will feature three-time Grammy winner and hip hop guitarist, Wyclef Jean. The concert will take place on Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. at Daily’s Place. WHO: Although known for his successful hip hop career, Wyclef Jean has a diverse musical background that includes classical music. By the time the star was 15, Jean could already play more than 10 musical instruments and his school teacher suggested he take courses in jazz and classical music. With an initial adverse reaction, the hip hop sensation admits the experience had impact on his musical growth. “It changed my head,” Jean said in an interview with Columbus Alive. “I started listening to Bach, Thelonious and Gershwin.” WHAT: Years later, Wyclef Jean will fuse his love of hip hop and classical music with a performance of some of his greatest hits live with the Jacksonville Symphony. The music that he has written, performed and produced has been a consistently powerful, pop cultural force for over two decades. In 1996, the Fugees, a group Wyclef founded, released their monumental album The Score. The album hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned a trio of smash singles and is now certified six times platinum. Wyclef went on to write and produce Shakira’s chart-topping single "Hips Don’t Lie," which climbed to No.
