Our appreciation Wfor simpler times and old-fashioned ways grew. This longing for what once was, has built great anticipation for the Final Sort Sale at Midland Bull Test 2021. The Williams and McDonell families cordially invite you to, FINALLY, join us in person for our usual festivities- we are so excited to see you for the banquets with social hour and celebratory live music. We share much of the same in the lives we choose to love. We value the practical, the progressive, the strong foundation. We are cattlemen. Here is where Midland is different. We know that genetic potential does not guarantee production. We know we can learn, and PROVE more at Midland Bull Test. This is where you come to ensure you have the best, of the best. At Midland we have top end genetics from progressive minded consignors, AND we also have efficiency backed by unmatched performance data. This knowledge makes choosing a bull for your operation simple. We do the arduous and disheartening work to cut good bulls through testing, for both natural and sometimes unfortunate flaws because part of being the best means cutting those good bulls that fell deficient in the details to only offer the GREAT bulls. The “FINAL Sort” is based on this thorough criterion. It represents the numerous sorts these bulls triumph to be offered on sale day. We, YOU, the critical and prudent cattleman can rest assured that they are getting what they need for todays market. African American Soldiers in the Philippine War: An Examination of the Contributions of Buffalo Soldiers during the Spanish American War and Its Aftermath, 1898–1902. Doctor of Philosophy (History), August 2017, 294 pp., 8 tables, bibliography, 120 titles. During the Philippine War, 1899 – 1902, America attempted to quell an uprising from the Filipino people. Four regular army regiments of black soldiers, the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry, and the Twenty-Fourth and Twenty-Fifth Infantry served in this conflict. Alongside the regular army regiments, two volunteer regiments of black soldiers, the Forty-Eighth and Forty-Ninth, also served. During and after the war these regiments received little attention from the press, public, or even historians. These black regiments served in a variety of duties in the Philippines, primarily these regiments served on the islands of Luzon and Samar. The main role of these regiments focused on garrisoning sections of the Philippines and helping to end the insurrection. To carry out this mission, the regiments undertook a variety of duties including scouting, fighting insurgents and ladrones (bandits), creating local civil governments, and improving infrastructure.

DESCRIPTORS Adolescent Literature:,*Comics (Publications) : *Critical Aeading: *English Instruction: Fiction: *Literary Criticism: *Literary Devices: *Narration: Secondary, Educition: Teaching Methods ABSTRACT The pdblications of the Marvel Comics Group warrant serious consIderation as .a legitimate narrative enterprise. While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD.. BECAUSE COMICS: COMICS LITERACY AND MULTIMODAL PEDAGOGY A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science By Shane Anthony Gomes In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Major Program: Rhetoric, Writing and Culture June 2020 Fargo, North Dakota North Dakota State University Graduate School Title Because Comics: Comics Literacy and Multimodal Pedagogy By Shane Anthony Gomes The Supervisory Committee certifies that this disquisition complies with North Dakota State University’s regulations and meets the accepted standards for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE: Emily Wicktor Chair Lisa Arnold Alison Graham-Bertolini Michael Strand Approved: July 10, 2020 Stephenson J. Beck Date Department Chair ABSTRACT How and what we teach in the post-secondary English classroom has tremendous power, both regarding individual students and larger contexts in which they function. As post-secondary instructors, our pedagogical approach to our subjects can impact our student’s abilities and experiences directly through interactions with texts, and also impact our specific institutions, our academic disciplines, and larger social structures. This project will propose what is best termed a disruptive pedagogy, founded in comics literacy, and a primary goal is to effect change in the classroom and therefore in our students’ later social and professional contexts. Increasingly, what we teach in English classrooms is moving towards a pedagogy of multimodality that reflects the contexts of our students outside of the classroom. Multimodal researchers Jennifer Rowsell and Eryn Decoste state that “To expand notions of composition, there is a need to not only introduce other modes such as visuals, sounds and interactive modes, but also develop frameworks, activities and lesson ideas to actually teach other modes of representation and expression” (246-247).

By analyzing and interpreting the generic superhero phenomenon of origin stories in comic books and by mapping the formal and narrative techniques used to construct origin stories, I show how received understandings of power, order, justice, violence, whiteness, masculinity, and heteronormativity often linger outside of language in an analytically untapped relational space between bodies—the space of political affect.
