Position Announcement Managing Editor, Alaska Journalism Collaboration

Alaska Public Media, KTOO Public Media and KUCB are jointly recruiting for an experienced journalist to lead our new Alaska journalism collaboration, funded by a major grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The partner stations will dedicate a team of reporters, editors and producers to provide in- depth coverage of energy issues in Alaska for statewide and national audiences. Topics will include resource development, energy in rural areas, the state budget, the Arctic and federal-state policy issues, among others. The Managing Editor will lead the team of nine journalists, and will be responsible for the overall editorial strategy of the collaboration. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a high- impact news capacity-building effort at a dynamic time in Alaska.

The Managing Editor will: • Design and execute all aspects of the editorial process for the collaboration • Develop the editorial focus and plan coverage • Develop a content and distribution strategy • Recruit and hire new employees • Edit stories and projects • Develop partnerships with other media organizations, including national program partners, and develop stories for national distribution • Develop special team reporting projects • Plan and implement a social media strategy • Plan and implement a community engagement strategy • Develop a training plan for the team • Develop a plan for assuring diversity in the selection of staff, sources and stories

Essential Knowledge/Skills • Perform in a fast-paced, dynamic and deadline-driven news environment • Stay abreast of contemporary news coverage and Web trends • Keep current with Alaska news and current events • Multitask and work across multiple media platforms • Work collegially in a team-based atmosphere • Adhere to acceptable journalistic styles and practices

Required Qualifications • Minimum of five years of professional journalism experience • Experience as an editor or producer • Experience working in a news, communication, publication, broadcast or Web environment • Ability to work collegially with multiple stakeholders and audiences in a team-based organization • Application of high journalistic standards and news judgment • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Qualifications • Advanced degree in journalism or a public policy field • Experience in public media journalism at a regional or national level • Knowledge of and experience in reporting on energy-related topics and/or Alaska issues

Anchorage-based Alaska Public Media operates APRN, the statewide news network, along with KSKA-FM and KAKM-TV. KTOO in Juneau operates the 360 North statewide public affairs channel and three public radio stations – KTOO, KRNN and KXLL. KUCB operates KUCB radio and TV in the remote community of Unalaska, on the Aleutian chain.
