FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Tom Robenolt, Perseverance Theatre (907) 364-2421 x228 [email protected] Art Rotch, Perseverance Theatre (907) 364 2421 x229 [email protected] Perseverance Theatre Opens 37th Season of Professional Theatre in Juneau with William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Othello August 31, 2015 - Juneau – Perseverance Theatre opens its 37th season with The Tragedy of Othello, one of Shakespeare’s best known plays. Othello is a ‘moorish,’ or African, general who has fought many wars for most of his life. While leading an army for Venice, he meets his wife Desdemona, a Venetian woman from a prominent family, and decides to bring his new wife with his army to fight in Cyprus. Meanwhile, Iago, Shakespeare’s most complex and mysterious villain, is upset by a minor slight when a rival, Cassio, is promoted instead of Iago himself. Once they arrive in Cyprus, Iago manipulates Othello and Cassio in a cold hearted act of petty vengeance. Othello is well known for its direct style and large number of intimate, conspiratorial scenes, framed by moments of violence. The cast features Jamil Mangan as Othello, previously seen at Perseverance as Asagai in A Raisin in the Sun; Kat Wodtke, making her Perseverance debut as Desdemona; and Brandon Demery as Iago, whose extensive list of Perseverance Theatre acting credits include the role of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, Perseverance’s most recent production by the bard. The rest of the cast features actors from Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks. Casting some of the best actors in the state is more possible now that Perseverance mounts seasons in two of Alaska’s largest cities, Juneau and Anchorage. -

THE COASTALASKA COLLABORATION ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE IN RESPONSE TO REDUCTION OF TAX SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING IN ALASKA Local That Works: Public Radio Case Study No. 1 By Richard Tait and Mark Fuerst October 2016 LOCAL THAT WORKS The premise of these four case studies, prepared for the Eastern Region Public Media PUBLIC RADIO SUPER-REGIONAL CONFERENCE (Oct. 25–27, 2016): stations need and want to be “more local." The evidence we have collected suggests they will succeed in doing so by filling gaps in local news coverage and playing a larger role in the daily life of their communities. It is safe to assume that all stations would do more of this—except for the fact that "being local" takes a good deal of money and staff. In an era of declining tax support, rural and small-market stations are getting squeezed. Through no fault of their own, their long-term prospects are being eroded by a combination of forces, including the inherent financial limits of a small local audience and small local economies; increasing ease of access to national program material; and increasing costs associated with multiplatform service. This is not a new problem. The "large/small" divide has permeated system politics. Meanwhile, the growing "capacity gap" between smaller and larger stations—in membership, staffing and digital tools—has been well documented by the PUBLIC MEDIA FUTURES FORUM. If public broadcasting is to retain its NEAR-UNIVERSAL REACH, the system will have to develop ways to sustain the service of small-market, especially rural, stations, and find ways to empower them to be both sustainable and more local. -

Position Announcement KTOO/CoastAlaska Accountant CoastAlaska, Inc. seeks a qualified team member to join our regional services staff as Half Time Accountant , part of a four person finance office that supports the activities of CoastAlaska and its member stations. Position responsibilities include: • Assists with all aspects of the accounts payable cycle, including reviews invoices & purchase orders, prepares payment approval forms and checks for disbursement • Assists with membership data base data entry and membership mailings • Assists with business functions for fundraising activities We are seeking a hardworking, energetic person who enjoys working with numbers and is very detail oriented. Since the beginning of 2010, the national weekly radio audience has grown from 239.7 million to 243 million listeners tuning in across more than 250 local markets in every corner of the country. 243 MILLION AMERICANS LISTEN TO RADIO EACH WEEK In a time of changing habits and new digital platforms, radio’s consistent audience numbers are quite remarkable. With the holidays just around the corner, consumers will be turning to the radio to catch their favorite sounds of the season or stay in touch with what’s happening in their local community each day. PUBLIC RADIO OFFERS AN UNCOMMON MIX OF PROGRAMMING FOR 32 MILLION LISTENERS This year we have profiled the overall radio landscape, multicultural audiences and network radio listeners, and for our final report we turn our attention to Public Radio; the more than 900 rated stations which offer an eclectic mix of news, entertainment, music and cultural programming in markets large and small.
