Hemmis (University of Southern Mississippi) Published on H-War (March, 2016) Commissioned by Margaret Sankey A Chance at Freedom In The Slaves’ Gamble, Gene Allen Smith tackles a seemingly simple question in early American history: “why did some free blacks and slaves side with the United States during the War of 1812, and why did others join the British, the Spanish, the Native American tribes, or maroon communities?” (p. xi). Smith discovers a complex and multifaceted answer. Tracing the service of many African American men from colonial times through the War of 1812, the author finds that moments of international conflict gave free and enslaved black men a chance at freedom if they chose wisely. Smith opens the book with the story of HMS Leopard stopping USS Chesapeake in 1807. He explains that three of the four sailors whom the British captured were black men claiming to be Americans. The Chesapeake-Leopard affair seemingly had little to do with race, but Smith argues that race was “central ... to the history of the subsequent War of 1812” (p. 2). War gave African American men an opportunity to choose their own futures; during several flash points in history, Smith demonstrates, free and enslaved blacks had a brief chance to determine their own destiny. -

History of the Town of Darien, Georgia - Established 1736 There are over 100 miles of pristine coastline, 400,000 acres of salt water marsh and 15 Barrier Islands that bring a uniqueness to Coastal Georgia that you will seldom find anywhere else in the world. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway which stretches from Key West to Boston, is connected to the local Altamaha River, which is the second largest fresh water discharge east of the Mississippi River. This charming coastal Georgia town sits just off of the mouth of the Altamaha River on the local deep-water docks of the Darien River. It is located just 25 miles from the prestigious shoreline of Sea Island, Georgia, one of the fastest growing luxury markets in the country and home to some of the country’s wealthiest … movie stars as well as professional athletes. FOUNDED BY SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS ON JANURY 19, 1736 The town of Darien has a wealth of history dating back to the 1700’s. In October 1735, a band of Highland Scots, recruited from the vicinity of Inverness, Scotland, by Hugh Mackay and George Dunbar, sailed from Inverness, Scotland on the Prince of Wales. On January 19, 1736, General James Edward Oglethorpe founded the new Georgia colony of New Inverness, which later became known as Darien, Georgia. Located at the mouth of the Altamaha River, Fort King George was built in 1721 along what is now known as the Darien River and served as the southernmost outpost of the British Empire in the Americas until 1727. It is the oldest English fort remaining on the Georgia coast. -

Beat out of blood with words sad-sung In strange un-Negro tongue So long So far away Is Africa -Langston Hughes, Free in a White Society INTRODUCTION When I started working in HISD’s Community Services my first assignment was working with inner city students that came to us straight from TYC (Texas Youth Commission). Many of these young secondary students had committed serious crimes, but at that time they were not treated as adults in the courts. Teaching these young students was a rewarding and enriching experience. You really had to be up close and personal with these students when dealing with emotional problems that would arise each day. Problems of anguish, sadness, low self-esteem, disappointment, loneliness, and of not being wanted or loved, were always present. The teacher had to administer to all of these needs, and in so doing got to know and understand the students. Each personality had to be addressed individually. Many of these students came from one parent homes, where the parent had to work and the student went unsupervised most of the time. In many instances, students were the victims of circumstances beyond their control, the problems of their homes and communities spilled over into academics. The teachers have to do all they can to advise and console, without getting involved to the extent that they lose their effectiveness. -

OFFICE OF CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY RESPONSIVE INITIATIVES Brownies’ Books: Grades 5 & 6 May 2020 The Brownies’ Books are comprised of stories (folktales, fantasies, as well as more realistic stories), poems, games, articles on current events of the era, letters from young readers and photographs. In 1920, these literary magazines celebrated African American identity, urged racial pride, and encouraged its young readers to aspire to positions of leadership within their communities. The books are intended to be read with other members of the family. Many of the life lessons taught in the books are applicable to the uplift of young people of all races today. The office of CLRI, has chosen literary works from the Brownies’ Books, edited by renowned scholar, W.E.B. Du Bois, for you and your child’s reading pleasure. Each literary work has standards‐ aligned reading, writing, and critical thinking activities to supplement core‐curriculum reading materials. The Brownies’ Books are written by diverse authors, and particularly, authors of African American descent. According to historical literacy expert, Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, citing W.E.B. Du Bois, the Brownies’ Books are “designed for all children, but especially for ours.” Moreover, “the content of the readings was intended to recognize and cultivate the genius within youth” (Muhammad, 2020, p.152). Please be informed that the Brownies’ Books are historical documents that use period language and phrases common during the 1920s era. While we have maintained the authenticity of this literature, please understand some of the dialects are not common terms or phrases that are widely used today. The text represents people of color in a positive light dispelling falsehood and stereotypes. -

Like the "captivity" narratives of colonists carried away by Native Americans, these stories became a popular literary form specifically because the perils of living in bondage. Here we read, at the turn of a page, as in the blink of a slave's eye, of death and other disasters. -

Cannon, Ph.D. 1st Break 9:55 – 10:10 nd 2 Break 11:00 -11:05 Course Title: Faith and Justice in Freedom Narratives: Lessons in Ethics from the Slave Quarters Course Description: This course is an interdisciplinary inquiry into the moral issues related to enslaved Africans who worked as chattel property in the economies of North America. We will examine theological expressions of faith and ethical issues of justice confronting the church community from the time of slavocracy to the present, especially how religion both empowered and disenfranchised African Americans in the struggle to actualize sacred embodiment. Objectives: a) to examine theological themes and contemporary ethical issues in the freedom narratives of enslaved African Americans; b) to interrogate moral agency in a variety of antebellum contexts regarding “how are we to live and for what;” c) to think creatively about the ways people of faith understand character, consequences, and obligations in relations to “a moral universe encompassing the whole community of life;” d) to become knowledgeable of literature in the field; e) to demonstrate facility in the skills of argumentation in order to become conversant with theological language so that members of contemporary confessing communities can live as authentic disciples in relation to the church’s mission and the meaning of the Gospel. Requirements and Procedures: Regular class attendance and reading that is complete, careful and on schedule are essential for this seminar.
