In January of 1997 the North Peace Airport Society signed documents transferring ownership from Transport Canada to the Society. As of March 18, 1997, the airport is operated by North Peace Airport Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Vancouver Airport Services. The North Peace Airport Society introduced an Airport Improvement Fee September 01, 1998 to raise funds for the renovation and construction of the Air Terminal Building. The new terminal building was completed in the fall of 2005. The North Peace Airport Society continues to work diligently to ensure that the airport is able to meet the needs of local industry and commerce. Planning for Fort St. John Air Show is Well Underway – by Scott Brooks, energeticcity.ca The planning for the 2019 Fort St. John Air Show is well underway. Fort St. John Air Show Events Organizer, Lana Neitz, says the 2019 event will be packed with talent and performers. “We’re looking at some really neat warbirds. We’re bringing the Kitty Hawk; we’re bringing in the Harvard’s of the Harmon Rockets… we were talking with some many performers down at the ICAS airshow convention. The Snowbirds will be here, and we’ve put in a request to the military to see if they will bring any other shows to do some tactical exercises.” According to Neitz, there will also be a huge fireworks display, and there will be some more performers added to the lineup as the show date draws near.

NEWSLETTER “A national organization dedicated to promoting the viability of Regional and Community Airports across Canada” www.rcacc.ca RCAC MEMBER AIRPORT PROFILE: Gimli Industrial Park Airport (CYGM), MB RCAF Station Gimli was an air station of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) located 3.7 km. west of Gimli, Manitoba. On September 6, 1943, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan established No. 18 Service Flying Training School (No. 18 SFTS) to train aircrew for Second World War operations using the Avro Anson. No. 18 SFTS ceased operation on May 30, 1945. During the Cold War period, many Second World War air stations were reactivated. Gimli was one of these, and was reopened in 1950 to become a jet aircraft training station. Flying training schools located here include No. 2 Flying Training School, No. 3 Advanced Flying School (redesignated in 1964 to No. 1 Flying Training School), and No. 1 Advanced Flying Training School. After unification of the three services in 1968, RCAF Station Gimli became a Canadian Forces Base (CFB). CFB Gimli closed in September 1971 and the flying schools moved to other Canadian forces bases. The former military field is now operated d as a civilian airport, with one of the original parallel runways decommissioned and now a significant portion of Gimli Motorsports Park. Flying-related activities here include use by Manitoba Provincial Government's water bomber squadron, the Gimli Cadet Flying Site, and two private flying schools. Gimli is also used by No. 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron based out of No. 17 Wing Winnipeg, for training purposes, and as a skydive drop zone by Skydive Manitoba.

NEWSLETTER Volume 10 No. 3 February 1, 2015 Regional Community Airports of Canada AIRPORT PROFILE: Swift Current Airport (CYYN), SK The Swift Current Airport is located 6.5 km east of the City of Swift Current on Airport Road. Swift Current Airport is a public facility that accommodates corporate charters, military training, private aircraft, and government aircraft--including the RCMP, STARS, and the provincial air ambulance. The airport served a significant role during World War II. From 1940 to 1944, it served as a training base for pilots who served with the Royal Air Force. The Swift Current Airport began to be developed by 1937 as an emergency stop for the proposed Trans-Canada Airlines. After WWII broke out, one of Canada's most important contributions to the war effort was the creation of Flying Training Schools for training British and Commonwealth pilots. Swift Current was chosen as the location for one of several training schools across the prairie provinces, where airspace was plentiful. The No. 39 Service Flying Training School (S.F.T.S.) officially opened at the Swift Current Airport on December 15, 1941. 17 young men lost their lives in training accidents, and hundreds more received their wings and were stationed overseas. While stationed in Swift Current, they were warmly welcomed into the homes — and gratefully welcomed into the businesses — of Swift Current. The station closed in the spring of 1944. Many of the airbase buildings have been repurposed throughout the community, including the Lions' Hall, Ashley Park Hall and the West Wing gallery at Kinetic Park.
