RCAC MEMBER AIRPORT PROFILE: Gimli Industrial Park Airport (CYGM), MB RCAF Station Gimli was an air station of the (RCAF) located 3.7 km. west of Gimli, . On September 6, 1943, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan established No. 18 Service Flying Training School (No. 18 SFTS) to train aircrew for Second World War operations using the Avro Anson. No. 18 SFTS ceased operation on May 30, 1945. During the Cold War period, many Second World War air stations were reactivated. Gimli was one of these, and was reopened in 1950 to become a jet aircraft training station. Flying training schools located here include No. 2 Flying Training School, No. 3 Advanced Flying School (redesignated in 1964 to No. 1 Flying Training School), and No. 1 Advanced Flying Training School. After unification of the three services in 1968, RCAF Station Gimli became a Canadian Forces Base (CFB). CFB Gimli closed in September 1971 and the flying schools moved to other Canadian forces bases. The former military field is now operated d as a civilian airport, with one of the original parallel runways decommissioned and now a significant portion of Gimli Motorsports Park. Flying-related activities here include use by Manitoba Provincial Government's water bomber squadron, the Gimli Cadet Flying Site, and two private flying schools. Gimli is also used by No. 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron based out of No. 17 Wing Winnipeg, for training purposes, and as a skydive drop zone by Skydive Manitoba. In the summertime, the airport hosts glider pilot training for air cadets as Regional Gliding School (Northwest). The airport has one of the province’s longest rural concrete runways at 6,800ft x 150ft. The airport also has 3 taxiways and 2 aprons, runway lighting for night operations, and is a VFR Airport with NDB Beacon. There is an existing air traffic control tower; however, it is only manned in the summer months by the Regional Gliding School cadets. A terminal building with 24-hour year-round access and a washroom is available. The airport has recently installed a fuel system that provides AVGAS 100LL and Jet A1 Fuel available for purchase. There are no landing fees and there are 10 tie downs available. The airport is open and maintained year-round. Located in the Business Park are many businesses, and a large dormitory owned by the RM of Gimli. Adjacent to the airport, on a former runway, is a Motor Sports Park where , sports car racing, go karting, motorbikes, off road vehicles, and motocross bikes race. In summer, there is extensive gliding and skydiving activities alongside flight training but in winter the flight school has almost exclusive use of the airport.
