June 1, 2017 Newsletter NEWSLETTER “A national organization dedicated to promoting the viability of Regional and Community Airports across Canada” www.rcacc.ca RCAC MEMBER AIRPORT PROFILE: Gimli Industrial Park Airport (CYGM), MB RCAF Station Gimli was an air station of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) located 3.7 km. west of Gimli, Manitoba. On September 6, 1943, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan established No. 18 Service Flying Training School (No. 18 SFTS) to train aircrew for Second World War operations using the Avro Anson. No. 18 SFTS ceased operation on May 30, 1945. During the Cold War period, many Second World War air stations were reactivated. Gimli was one of these, and was reopened in 1950 to become a jet aircraft training station. Flying training schools located here include No. 2 Flying Training School, No. 3 Advanced Flying School (redesignated in 1964 to No. 1 Flying Training School), and No. 1 Advanced Flying Training School. After unification of the three services in 1968, RCAF Station Gimli became a Canadian Forces Base (CFB). CFB Gimli closed in September 1971 and the flying schools moved to other Canadian forces bases. The former military field is now operated d as a civilian airport, with one of the original parallel runways decommissioned and now a significant portion of Gimli Motorsports Park. Flying-related activities here include use by Manitoba Provincial Government's water bomber squadron, the Gimli Cadet Flying Site, and two private flying schools. Gimli is also used by No. 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron based out of No. 17 Wing Winnipeg, for training purposes, and as a skydive drop zone by Skydive Manitoba. In the summertime, the airport hosts glider pilot training for air cadets as Regional Gliding School (Northwest). The airport has one of the province’s longest rural concrete runways at 6,800ft x 150ft. The airport also has 3 taxiways and 2 aprons, runway lighting for night operations, and is a VFR Airport with NDB Beacon. There is an existing air traffic control tower; however, it is only manned in the summer months by the Regional Gliding School cadets. A terminal building with 24-hour year-round access and a washroom is available. The airport has recently installed a fuel system that provides AVGAS 100LL and Jet A1 Fuel available for purchase. There are no landing fees and there are 10 tie downs available. The airport is open and maintained year-round. Located in the Business Park are many businesses, and a large dormitory owned by the RM of Gimli. Adjacent to the airport, on a former runway, is a Motor Sports Park where drag racing, sports car racing, go karting, motorbikes, off road vehicles, and motocross bikes race. In summer, there is extensive gliding and skydiving activities alongside flight training but in winter the flight school has almost exclusive use of the airport. Time for Action on Airport – Letters, Lethbridge Herald It is with a mixture of amusement and amazement I read in the Lethbridge Herald the Province of Alberta has agreed to blow another $90,000 to fund an Airport Master Plan. The amusement comes from the fact that this effort is yet another in a string of taxpayer-funded efforts by politicians over the years who yearn to be seen doing something without achieving anything. May 9, 2017 2. Ontario Airports Must Accommodate Traffic Growth, Study Says – by Greg Keenan, The Globe and Mail Southern Ontario risks losing out on a $15-billion stimulus to the province’s gross domestic product if airports fail to co- ordinate their development to take advantage of a massive increase in airline-passenger traffic by mid-century. That’s one conclusion of a study done for the Southern Ontario Airport Network, which represents airports from Kingston to Windsor and is trying to make sure the region captures all the economic benefit from the jump in passenger travel. American Road Courses Road America Watkins Glen Meadowdale Laguna Seca Westwood Riverside Mid Ohio Every Road Course Daytona of Past and Present in the United States Mosport and Canada Sebring Barber Miller Rob Semmeling American Road Courses Page 2 Introduction This file lists all permanentpaved road courses - i.e. non-oval racing circuits - in the United States and Canada. In most cases, 'permanent' is synonymous with 'purpose-built'. However, some circuits were not purpose-built but actually started out as tempo- rary courses. Florida's Sebring International Raceway, for example, was originally a temporary airfield course, laid out over the runways of Hendricks Field. Likewise, Portland International Raceway in Oregon evolved from a street course. Both circuits are nowadays permanent facilities. The starting point for this list was the 2003 edition of Allan Brown's book "A History of America's Speedways: Past & Present". This is an indispensable reference work for which Allan cannot be praised enough. However, in the book the road courses are a bit buried between the vast number of ovals. Listing them separately gives a better overview. Also, I found the information in the book is not always accurate. It is an excellent basis for further research but the data should be treated with great care. I have done my best to present the most correct and accurate info in this file, although there may well be errors here and there. In general, there are three main types of American road courses. The most interesting are the 'pure' road courses which were built specifically for road racing.
