Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

1 7 Councils, Counsel and Consensus in Henry VIII’s Reformation RICHARD REX The one who really loves his prince is the one who counsels him and urges those things through which his rule is loved, his good name safeguarded, and his conscience unharmed.1 Even before Elton’s Tudor Revolution in Government (1953) it was recognised that the reign of Henry VIII represented a crucial stage in the development of the royal council, most notably in the formal emergence of a privy council unburdened by the judicial functions that had long clung to the king’s council thanks to its role at the centre of the royal court. The privy council that achieved autonomous existence in 1540 no longer bore even the outward form of a judicial body, unlike most other government departments of that time. Unlike most of the others, it was not even called a court. Its fundamental role, of course, was executive, something which many of Elton’s successors found it hard to appreciate as it was always so tempting to see the privy council in terms of the mid-twentieth-century high tide of British cabinet government. But the desire to see the privy council as a consultative policy-making body was not wholly without foundation. THE REFORMATION IN LEICESTER AND LEICESTERSHIRE, c.1480–1590 Eleanor Hall Since its arrival in England, never did Christianity undergo such a transformation as that of the Reformation. By the end of the sixteenth century the official presence of Catholicism had almost entirely disappeared in favour of Protestantism, the permanent establishment of which is still the institutional state religion. This transformation, instigated and imposed on the population by a political elite, had a massive impact on the lives of those who endured it. In fact, the progression of these religious developments depended on the compliance of the English people, which in some regions was often absent. Indeed, consideration must be given to the impact of the Reformation on these localities and social groups, in which conservatism and nostalgia for the traditional faith remained strong. In spite of this, the gradual acceptance of Protestantism by the majority over time allowed its imposition and the permanent establishment of the Church of England. Leicestershire is a county in which significant changes took place. This paper examines these changes and their impact on, and gradual acceptance by, the various religious orders, secular clergy, and the laity in the town and county. Important time and geographical comparisons will be drawn in consideration of the overall impact of the Reformation, and the extent to which both clergy and laity conformed to the religious changes imposed on them, and managed to retain their religious devotion in the process. INTRODUCTION The English Reformation is one of the periods in history that attracts a high level of interest and debate. -

Knudsen Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto This dissertation examines monastic sexual misconduct in cloistered religious houses in the dioceses of Lincoln and Norwich between and . Traditionally, any study of English monasticism during the late Middle Ages entailed the chronicling of a slow decline and decay. Indeed, for nearly years, historiographical discourse surrounding the Dissolution of Monasteries (-) has emphasized its inevitability and presented late medieval monasticism as a lacklustre institution characterized by worsening standards, corruption and even sexual promiscuity. As a result, since the Dissolution, English monks and nuns have been constructed into naughty characters. My study, centred on the sources that led to this claim, episcopal visitation records, will demonstrate that it is an exaggeration due to the distortion in perspective allowed by the same sources, and a disregard for contextualisation and comparison between nuns and monks. In Chapter one, I discuss the development of the monastic ‘decline narrative’ in English historiography and how the theme of monastic lasciviousness came to be so strongly associated with it. Chapter two presents an overview of the historical background of late medieval English monasticism and my methodological approach to the sources. ii Abstract iii In Chapter three, I survey some of the broad characteristics of monastic sexual misconduct. -

The Native Roots of Early English Reformation Theology
EQ 66:1 (1994), 19-35 Ian Stackhouse The Native Roots of Early English Refonnation Theology Mr Stacklwuse, woo is assistant pastor at the Kirl!fs Church, Amersham, probes into the theology of the Lollard movement. It is notoriously difficult in any period of theological restatement to identifY and categorise the various influences that contribute towards change. This is particularly so in any attempt to discern in the shaping of early English Reformation theology distinct traces or even faint echoes of Luther, Erasmus or Zwingli. To isolate anyone particular theological background is problematic in that the theology of this period tends to be an amalgam of different ideas. Attempts have been made however, and rightly so, to come to some con clusions as to the theological roots of this early part of Reformation history and not surprisingly the view of American Lutheran historians, such as N.]. Tjernagel, is that the main ideas were in fact determined on the continent by Luther. According to this view the leading advocates of the Reformation in England, 1Jndale and Barnes, were nothing more than disciples of Luther himself. Moreover, Anglicanism, as expressed in the 39 articles, was fundamentally Lutheran.1 Others stress the influence of the Swiss reformers upon the theology of the English Reformation. The influence of Zwingli and Calvin is undoubtedly felt later on, but William Clebsch argues that Swiss theology was already at work., in this earlier period, in displacing Lutheranism in England.2 It is not the purpose of this essay, however, to highlight these continental influences. That the English Reformation owed much to Europe is undoubted and receives a great deal of scholarly attention. -

Much of its building has been obscured by alterations and replacement of parts of the building. The origin of the church is entwined with the origins of the town, another dating problem. The lay out of the main street, Hart Street, leads directly to the church and not to the bridge, which suggests that the church and town were planned before the bridge was built. Before the bridge there would have been a crossing of the river, which was most likely a ford, possibly at the end of Bell Lane, which up until 1892 was the northern municipal boundary of Henley and was where Benson (Bensington) had an outlet to the river.
