												A Study of the Ewe Unification Movement in the United States
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: A STUDY OF THE EWE UNIFICATION MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES BY DJIFA KOTHOR THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in African Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Master’s Committee: Professor Faranak Miraftab, Chair Professor Kathryn Oberdeck Professor Alfred Kagan ABSTRACT This master’s thesis attempts to identity the reasons and causes for strong Ewe identity among those in the contemporary African Diaspora in the United States. An important debate among African nationalists and academics argues that ethnic belonging is a response to colonialism instigated by Western-educated African elites for their own political gain. Based on my observation of Ewe political discourses of discontent with the Ghana and Togolese governments, and through my exploratory interviews with Ewe immigrants in the United States; I argue that the formation of ethnic belonging and consciousness cannot be reduced to its explanation as a colonial project. Ewe politics whether in the diaspora, Ghana or Togo is due to two factors: the Ewe ethnonational consciousness in the period before independence; and the political marginalization of Ewes in the post-independence period of Ghana and Togo. Moreover, within the United States discrimination and racial prejudice against African Americans contribute to Ewe ethnic consciousness beyond their Togo or Ghana formal national belongings towards the formation of the Ewe associations in the United States. To understand the strong sense of Ewe identity among those living in the United States, I focus on the historical questions of ethnicity, regionalism and politics in Ghana and Togo. -

(1958-2010) Essohanam BATCHANA Université de Lomé (Togo) Département d’Histoire et d’Archéologie E-mail : [email protected] Résumé Avec une superficie de 56 600 Km², le Togo compte une quarantaine d’ethnies. Ce territoire de 6 millions d’habitants (RGPH1 2010) a connu des crises politiques débouchant parfois à des affrontements intercommunautaires. Ces violences ont amené en mai 1963, les autorités politiques, à créer une Commission de réparations en vue de dédommager les victimes des persécutions politiques entre le 27 avril 1958 et le 13 janvier 1963. Quarante-six (46) ans après, le pouvoir fut de nouveau obligé de créer un autre organe de réconciliation, la Commission vérité justice et réconciliation (CVJR). Celle-ci s’est penchée sur les violences à caractère politique entre 1958 et 2005 et a fait des recommandations en vue de la réconciliation des Togolais. Dans la recommandation 44, la CVJR proposa l’instauration d’une journée nationale de la réconciliation dont la célébration chaque année, permettra aux Togolais de renouveler leur engagement à vivre ensemble dans la paix. Cette date consensuelle fut difficile à trouver. En définitive, la CVJR suggéra le 20 août, date de la signature en 2006 de l’Accord politique global (APG), dont les conclusions ne sont pas toutes mises en œuvre. Ces difficultés éprouvées par la CVJR pour trouver une date mémorielle, ne sont-elles pas la preuve que les Togolais manquent de repères? Cette absence de consensus autour des repères nationaux n’est-elle pas un obstacle à la construction de l’Etat- Nation au Togo? This essentially led to not only certain shifts in the analysis of Nigeria's foreign policy after 1988, but also a recap that also triggered a review of current policies in the Fourth Republic. MANAGEMENT OF TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCES IN AFRICA THE ROLE OF MEDIATION IN POST- COVID-19 NEGOTIATIONS PROFESSOR CHIOMA KANU AGOMO • Chioma Kanu Agomo is a Professor of Law with specialist interests in Employment and Labour Relations Law, Insurance Law, and Gender and the law. Prof Agomo is a graduate of Queen Mary College (now Queen Mary) University of London. She graduated with Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Second Class Upper Division (1976), and Master of Laws (LLM) Merit (1977). Chioma was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1980. She also holds a Diploma in International Labour Standards (2001), and Certificates in Mainstreaming Gender Equality (2008), Gender Budgeting, (2010), and Training for Gender Audit Facilitators (2010), all from the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Turin, Italy. Professor Agomo has over thirty eight years of teaching, research and supervision experience. She has conducted research in various aspects of insurance law, women and their work environment,Women’s health as a Human Right, Gender, Work environment and Reproductive Health, Human Rights of Workers, and social security among others. She has mentored well over 2000students, supervised seven PhD candidates. She was a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar (Southern University (A & M) Baton Rouge Louisina 1994-95); Visiting Fulbright Specialist to Washington University School of Law in St Louis, Missouri, 2006. She has consulted for the ILO on the Declaration Project Nigeria, Conrad Adeneur Foundation/ Civil Liberties Organisation on Social Security Project for Nigeria, and for ECOWAS on the ILO funded Draft Harmonisation of Labour Laws of ECOWAS Member States.
