UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA IEW§ Bierman Field Athletic Building 516 15th Avenue Southeast Minneapolis, MN 55455 (612) 625-4090 Fax 625-0359 April4, 1996 For Immediate Release GOLDEN GOPHER BASEBALL PULLS OUT LATE WIN OVER ST. 1HOMAS Minnesota (11-12) used a two-out, two-run home run off the bat of junior Steve Huls in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 10-9 non-conference win over St. Thomas (14-2) late Wednesday night at the Metrodome. The Golden Gophers and the Tommies didn't start the game until 9:52 p.m. due to a late schedule change and conflicts at the Metrodome. The game ended at 12:56 a.m. Phil McDermott led off the ninth inning for Minnesota with a sharp single to left field. Designated hitter Ben Griffm then popped an attempted sacrifice bunt up to first base for the first out of the inning and was followed by center fielder Mike Mahady's line out to short which almost caught McDermott leaning off of first base. The throw was wide which put the bat in Huls' hands and the junior promptly lined his first career home run over the baggy in right to give the Golden Gophers the 10-9 win. The Tommies held the lead for most of the ball game jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before surrendering three runs in the bottom half of the same inning. The Tommies posted four more runs in the next inning and held the lead until the last hit of the game. Tony Fisher and Jesse Bryant led the attack at the plate for the Tommies collecting three hits apiece while Steve Pignato contributed with a three-run home run in the second inning. The Golden Gophers were led at the plate by Huls, who fmished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI's and four runs scored while Eric Welter, Craig Selander, Rob Smith and Bryan Guse each had two hits apeice.
