To reach this point in the season, many hours of volunteer service have been contributed by a number of people ‐‐ particularly by team managers, coaches, and administrators. I hope that you will take a moment to thank them for their time and effort, before the conclusion of this tournament. In addition, all of the local American Legion Posts that sponsor our participating teams are owed a great deal of gratitude. Without their support and involvement, this program would not be possible. In addition to sponsoring the Baseball Program, the American Legion has an exceptional history of helping to keep our communities strong, through a multitude of community and youth service programs. Therefore, I would encourage you to thank them by patronizing your local American Legion ‐‐ and by considering membership in the American Legion (if you are a veteran yourself) or in the American Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion (if a family member is a veteran.) Contact your local American Legion Post for further information. I would like to thank the fine businesses and organizations listed later in this souvenir program for their support of this tournament, the St. Paul Municipal Umpire Association, and the Tri‐City Maroon team for making its field available to all of us. Lastly, the success of the American Legion Baseball program in our area would not be possible without the support of parents and fans. So, thank you! Please consider continuing your support of the Program, even after your family's participation has ended, so that we can keep it strong for future generations of ball players. Enjoy the tournament ‐‐ and the best of luck to all participating teams !!!! UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. Don't count on Phils repeating as champs | Philadelphia Inquirer ... http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/39606702.html SPORTS Welcome Guest | Register | Sign In High School Sports email this print this TEXT SIZE: A A A A Posted on Sat, Feb. 14, 2009 Don't count on Phils repeating as champs In five trips to the Series, the team didn't make it back the next year, much less repeat. By Rich Westcott For The Inquirer The euphoria from the Phillies' 2008 World Series victory has yet to subside, but as spring training begins, the speculation already has started. Can the Phillies do it again? Can the team that was one of the best in Philadelphia baseball history and one that captured the hearts of the region win a second consecutive World Series championship? Will there be another parade down Broad Street? While posing that question, which the Phillies and most of their fans hope will be answered in the affirmative, let's look at what the team did in the years after its previous trips to the World Series. The Phils appeared in the Fall Classic in 1915, 1950, 1980, ERIC MENCHER / Staff Photographer 1983 and 1993. Phillies catcher Darren Daulton (right) and reliever Mitch Williams during the 1993 World Despite high expectations, there were no repeats. In the Series against Toronto. last half-century, only one of Philadelphia's major sports teams, the 1974-75 Flyers, won two championships in a row. And in baseball, no team has won two straight since 1 of 3 View images the 1998-2000 New York Yankees.
