  • The Jain Digamber Sampraday
The Jain Digamber Sampraday The history of Digamber sect for the first six centuries is very hazy. The Digambers unlike Shwetambers did not write detailed historical accounts of their sect, and what has been written seems to have been created around the 6th century AD (based on the inscription found in Shravana Belgola). According to Digamber tradition, the breakup of joint sangh began with Vishaka, who was a disciple of Bhadraprabhu. Many believe that it was in the 2nd century AD that Acharya Kundakunda set the Digamber tradition on a firm footing. Today most Digamber traditions revere Acharya Kundakunda more than Vishaka and Bhadraprabhu, who are otherwise above in the lineage of saints. Digamber Sampraday, in recent centuries, has been divided into the following sub-sects: Majot sub-sects: 1. Bispanth 2. Digamber Terapanth 3. Taranapanth or Samaiyapanth Other sub-sects: a. Gumanapanth b. Totapanth c. Kanji-Panth 1. Bispanth, according to some, is the original group of Digamber sect and has the highest following among all Digamber Jains. Bispanth has a large following in Karnatka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The followers of Bispanth support the Dharma-gurus, that is, religious authorities known as Bhattarak who are also the heads of Jain Maths (monasteries). The Bisapanth, in their temples, worship the idols of Tirthankaras. They also worship the idols of Ksetrapala, Padmavati and other deities. 2. Digamber Terapanth arose in North India in the year 1664 AD as a revolt against the domination and conduct of the Bhattarakas. As a result, in this sub-sects, the institution of Bhattarakas lost respect in North India.

  • On the Indian Sect of the Jainas. Translated from the German. Edited
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO LIBRARY WILLIAM H. DONNER COLLECTION purchased from a gift by THE DONNER CANADIAN FOUNDATION 3Q- ON THE INDIAN SECT OF THE JAINAS BY JOHANN GEORG BUHLER C.I.E., LLD., PH.D. Member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, Vienna. TRANSLATED FROM THE GERMAN. EDITED with an OUTLINE of JAINA MYTHOLOGY BY JAs. BURGESS, C.I.E., LL.D., F.R.S.E. LONDON : LUZAC & Co., PUBLISHERS TO THE INDIA OFFICE 46, Great Russell Street 1903. PRINTED BY E. J. BRILL, LEYDEN (Holland). PREFACE. The late Dr. Georg Biihler s essay Ueber die Indische Secte der Jaina, read at the anniversary meeting of the Imperial Academy of Sciences of Vienna on the 26 th May 1887, has been for some time out of print in the separate form. Its value as a succinct account of the Sravaka sect, by a scholar conversant with them and their religious literature is well known to European scholars; but to nearly all educated natives of India works pu blished in German and other continental languages are practically sealed books, and thus the fresh information which they are well able to contribute is not elicited. It is hoped that the translation of this small work may meet with their acceptance and that of Europeans in India and elsewhere to whom the original is either unknown or who do not find a foreign language so easy to read as their own. The translation has been prepared under my supervision, and with a few short footnotes. Professor Biihler s long note on the authenticity of the Jaina PREFACE.

  • History of Jainism
A HISTORY OF THE JAINS ASHIM KUMAR ROY 1984 First Published 1984 GITANJALI PUBLISHING HOUSE 2/12 Vikram Vihar Lajpat Nagar IV, New Delhi-110024 Ashim Kumar Roy GITANJALI PUBLISHING HOUSE NEW DELHI PRINTED BY RISE PRESS PRINTERS DESIGNERS PUBLISHERS 902/290 SHALAMAR INDUSTRIAL AREA P O NEW SUBZI MANDI DELHI 110033 INTRODUCTION In the sixth century BC Buddhism had just been founded. The Vedic religion was almost getting extinct and Hinduism as we know it today was at a nebulous stage. Jainism at that time was not only a mature and living religion but also one claiming a hoary antiquity. All its tenets had fully developed by that time and these tenets have remained almost unchanged all these 2500 years. Jainism is thus the oldest living religion of India. But age alone is not what gives importance to Jainism. This religion is important because it has greatly influenced practically all-religious thinking of India. If, as is thought by many, the spirit of Indian religious life was 'life and world negating' it might be said that it was mainly due to the influence of Jainism and similar other religions of that time on Indian thought. It also shows the triumph of the Jain spirit over the 'life and world affirming' attitude of the Vedic people who failed to divert the main stream of Indian religious thinking from pessimism to an optimistic and joyous path. The aversion to the killing of animals, the belief that all ascetics are holy people (and conversely that a person in order to be holy should be an ascetic), the theory of the transmigration of the soul, and that 'getting born in this world is itself a punishment' all these are parts of Hindu thinking.

Jain Legend Jain Dharma kā Maulika Itihāsa Author Ācāryaśrī Hastī Mala Jī M.S Editors (English Version) Shugan C. Jain P. S. Surana VOLUME 2 ABRIDGED Relating to Omniscient lords and knowers of the prior canons (Part relating to Kevalīs & Pūrvadharas) 1 Editorial Jain Legend is the verbatim English translation of series of four volumes Jain Dharma kā Maulika Itihāsa (abridged) in Hindi edited by Sh. Gajsingh Rathod. The original voluminous Jain Dharma kā Maulika Itihāsa was authored by venerable Ācāryaśrī Hastīmala Jī M.S., the foremost ācārya of Sthanakavasi tradition of Jain congregation. We have been extremely careful in maintaining the content of Jain Dharma kā Maulika Itihāsa (abridged) as it is without any changes / or adding comments by us so as to retain the authentic writings of Ācāryaśrī Hastīmala Jī M.S. Thus the English translation carries his scholarship and research over an extended period of over twenty years. In this English edition, we have tried to keep some of the definitive terms of Jainism as they are and give their English equivalent (as much representative as possible) on the first occurrence and also listed at the end of this note. To appreciate their understanding and pronunciation, we have used diacritical marks for legendary names of persons / texts / places and the definitive Jain terms e.g. aṃga meaning the limb or part and commonly written as anga, etc. We express my thanks to following translators and other support staff members for their contribution to bring out Jain Legend 1. • 'Examining Religion' Through Generations of Jain Audiences
religions Article ‘Examining Religion’ through Generations of Jain Audiences: The Circulation of the Dharmapar¯ıks. a¯ Heleen De Jonckheere Department of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, Ghent University, 33, 9000 Gent, Belgium; [email protected] Received: 28 February 2019; Accepted: 28 April 2019; Published: 7 May 2019 Abstract: Indian literary traditions, both religious and non-religious, have dealt with literature in a fluid way, repeating and reusing narrative motifs, stories and characters over and over again. In recognition of this, the current paper will focus on one particular textual tradition within Jainism of works titled Dharmapar¯ıks.a¯ and will trace its circulation. This didactic narrative, designed to convince a Jain audience of the correctness of Jainism over other traditions, was first composed in the tenth century in Apabhram. ´sa and is best known in its eleventh-century Sanskrit version by the Digambara author Amitagati. Tracing it from a tenth-century context into modernity, across both classical and vernacular languages, will demonstrate the popularity of this narrative genre within Jain circles. The paper will focus on the materiality of manuscripts, looking at language and form, place of preservation, affiliation of the authors and/or scribe, and patronage. Next to highlighting a previously underestimated category of texts, such a historical overview of a particular literary circulation will prove illuminating on broader levels: it will show networks of transmission within the Jain community, illustrate different types of mediation of one literary tradition, and overall, enrich our knowledge of Jain literary culture. Keywords: Jainism; manuscripts; circulation; satire; narrative The Jain Dharmapar¯ıks.a¯ narrative, which stands out because of its explicit satirical character towards non-Jain traditions, has been popular from at least the tenth century until the nineteenth century.
