CHAIR’S 2012 REPORT

2012 was a strong Festival in every sense - and has given all of us the confidence to plan a future with imagination and a bold spirit!

In our Artistic Director Piers Lane, so aptly honoured last year with an AO in the Queens' Birthday Honours list, we have an extraordinary musician and an amazingly adept creative program planner. Piers uses his network of talented colleagues and his imagination and knowledge to produce a yearly Festival full of surprises and musical richness while also managing to stick within the inevitably tight budget at his disposal!! Piers' leadership and commitment to the Festival is one of our key strengths. The other is Sue Hackett, our skilled and hardworking General Manager whose own knowledge, experience and networks have enabled us to grow and strengthen the cost/revenue dynamic of the Festival over the past two years.

Our loyal audience, our donors and sponsors large and small, the outstanding musicians, energetic staff and the Townsville community continue to provide a unique mix of elements which form the character of the AFCM.

I am pleased to announce that the Board has decided to establish an AFCM FUTURE FUND which will, as it grows, protect and secure the long-term stability of the Festival. The fund will not be used for operating costs of the Festival but is envisaged as an endowment fund which will, in time, give a small income stream to the Festival. More importantly it will give security to our Festival given that we do not own any significant physical assets and at the moment we live from year to year in terms of financial health. Our goal is to have $1 million dollars in the Fund which is approximately one year's operating budget. There will be very tight restrictions concerning the circumstances under which the Fund can be accessed and two external consultants will also be advising the Board on its use. Our initial contribution this year is primarily a windfall reimbursement of GST payments and will total $75,000. We aim to secure $25,000 in foundation gifts from a small targeted group of supporters. We will make, if possible, judicious annual contributions to the Fund but we also trust that bequests and other gifts over time will contribute to the fund. We are conscious that we cannot undermine the annual fundraising of the festival but we anticipate that there will be donors who will want to give to the long-term security of the Festival from time to time. I hope all of our supporters will consider support for the AFCM FUTURE FUND.

During 2012, we farewelled Professor Andrew Vann and Mr. David Kippin from the Board. Both of these gentlemen made extraordinary contributions to the Festival and to the Board. I am very pleased to say that both of them remain engaged and involved supporters of the Festival. We also welcomed three new Directors to the Board during 2012: Professor Robyn McGuiggan Pro-Vice Chancellor of James Cook University, Mr. Graham Jackson OAM, business leader and music lover and Mr. Russell Mitchell, General Manager of Opera Queensland, a highly regarded arts manager based in . We have a diverse, committed Board who reflect the stakeholders of our Festival and I thank them for their time and wisdom during the past year.

3

Finally I thank our Patron, Her Excellency, Ms Penelope Wensley AC, and our four government partners Tourism and Events Queensland, Arts Queensland, Townsville City Council and the Australia Council for the Arts.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S 2012 REPORT

AFCM 2012 proved quite a hit! Nearly everything went smoothly. The artists all seemed to adore each other, I can’t think of any sub-standard performance and I was besieged with compliments on the programming, to the point that I began to be concerned about achieving a similar success with artists and repertoire in 2013. Huge thanks are due to Sue Hackett, whose flair and foresight, professionalism and people skills, intelligence and command are exemplary. Under her leadership, Amy Zaghini has blossomed into an invaluable staff member, Deb Bowbyes kept calm control over all sorts of potentially difficult situations and the rest of the administrative team (Sophia, Rebecca, Jenny and Cameron) worked effectively and co-operatively and very hard. Artists commented on how efficiently and thoughtfully everything was managed. AFCM has developed a reputation for really looking after its artists well.

There was a solid core of overseas artists who all proved easy-going, diligent and masterly in their performances. The replacement of the Storioni Trio’s leader at a fortnight’s notice (due to neck and shoulder problems) with Natsuko Yoshimoto, based in , was a coup. She fitted the trio like a glove and learned all the required repertoire, much of it new to her, with extraordinary rapidity, concentration and panache, qualities also necessary from Lorna McGhee and Cathy McCorkill, who had to arrive, due to prior commitments, on the day of their first performance – the Opening Night - Lorna from the States! They played magnificently…

4

Nigel Westlake was possibly the most communicative Composer-in-Residence we have ever had. He stayed for the entire festival, coached artists, spoke at concerts and attended all events. He chatted with audience members and charmed everyone.

William Barton provided some wonderful musical experiences – particularly at the Gala Dinner and on Orpheus Island. Katie Noonan performed beautifully at all events, like her partner Karin Schaupp, who came with new baby and mother in tow. The Camerata of St Johns impressed everybody this festival. It is a great joy as AD to be able to include repertoire with string chamber orchestra and I trust I shall be able to continue to work with them in the future. The inclusion of Gladys Chua, a student from ANAM who has been a participant in a previous Winterschool, was a fabulous success. She was the prime page turner, accompanied the Winterschool students when necessary, accompanied the Children’s choirs and performed one broadcast piece in the main festival (the difficult Nigel Westlake ‘Rare Sugar’). She was intelligent, willing and uncomplaining – and finally sorted out many of our page-turning worries from other years.

The Band of Brothers poolside concert at Jupiters worked beautifully – though cool weather was a pity. The Chefs in the North Dinner was a success too. Damien Beaumont proved a genial co-host and delightful support and foil to Maggie Beer.

Collaborations with Steve Price, Dance North, Allegretto Children’s Choir and Belgian Gardens Choir proved popular with local audiences and all were of a Maggie Beer and William Barton at Chefs in the North Dinner 2012 pleasing level. The art competition to Photo © Danielle Hansen provoke interest in the Families’ Concert was also a worthy initiative and should be replicated for future festivals.

The acoustic achieved in the Civic Theatre with a little electronic enhancement this year was the best

I can remember. Shifting the Concert Conversations to C2 proved a great success. The acoustic there is infinitely preferable to those we’ve had in the past. All those I spoke to appreciated the intimacy, acoustic and sightlines and even enjoyed the opportunity to have morning tea outside in the sunshine. St Josephs, with its naturally good acoustic, was also a lovely venue. The Cairns Civic Theatre is dry acoustically – but with the very impressive audience we achieved, the sound improved to a certain extent – certainly we felt we could communicate adequately and successfully. Whitfield House for the Concert Conversation was a joy in every way. This trip, supported by the James Cook University to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Cairns campus, has, I think, inspired an ongoing relationship with the city.

The volunteers were their usual wonderful selves, with many going beyond the call of duty to ensure artists were where they wanted to be at any one time. Those in the kitchen at the Pit Building even provided extra food themselves – cut up tropical fruit and homemade cakes and biscuits, all of which were wildly popular with the artists.

5

We are terribly fortunate to have the support of Ara and Nyree Vartoukian and the Theme & Variations shops in Sydney and Brisbane. They worked under great duress (the Sydney International Piano Competition, which they also supply with instruments finishing just as rehearsals for the AFCM started) to make available to us on time and we salute their doggedness and generosity yet again.

The 2012 AFCM was a genuinely massive success in all ways: artistic, financial and administrative – and a great compliment to the intelligence and vision of its Board and team. On a personal note, I was totally happy with EVERYbody I worked with this year – office staff, Board, collaborations, artists, production team, ABC – it was a dream team! Let’s try to hold onto everybody for next year and beyond!

GENERAL MANAGER’S 2012 REPORT

The Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) presented its 22nd season in 2012. It was one of those memorable festivals where the artists all took to the repertoire and their colleagues like ducks to water and the enjoyment and excitement built over the ten day run. The exuberant farewell concert was a wonderful celebration of high spirits and good music, on both sides of the footlights. The Winterschool also thrived and it was great to see the students and advanced players from interstate occupying the rehearsal spaces and attending the concerts in enthusiastic groups. Winterschool Director, Michele Walsh, was instrumental in raising the standard of participant and the performance results they achieved.

6

For the first time we included a composer index in the programme book and it provided an instant and impressive snapshot of the range and depth of the repertoire that Piers programmes, we’ll be doing each year from now on. Box Office income exceeded expectations (18% up on 2011), from the day tickets went on sale we were ahead of 2011 figures and that margin held through to the very last concert. Having the AFCM team in place, a good Marketing strategy, and the programme brochure distributed via more targeted outlets made a big difference. We are now at over 40% box office income and still growing.

Summary of income and expenditure 2012

Development, $255,250 , 23% Govt grants, Govt grants $355,604 , 33% Box Office Development Box Office, $472,015 , 44%

Figure 1 AFCM Income 2012

Administration, Programme costs $370,836 , 37% Marketing Programme costs, $504,679 , 50% Administration

Marketing, $132,150 , 13%

Figure 2 AFCM Expenditure 2012 Attendance was up 9%, AFCM Membership increased by 18% though we dropped our Gold Pass total by a handful. Work has gone into making sure our Gold Pass holders, fellow travellers as it were with the artists, have an irresistible package in 2013 as they are such a special group and great supporters of the AFCM.

7

Turnover for the year was $1.15 million and we ended with a surplus of $139,538 of which $68,000 was a one off GST rebate. The AFCM team was still relatively lean, as it had had to be in 2011, but with the financial situation more secure we can now return to more appropriate staff levels.

The AFCM co-commissioned a work that will receive its Australian première at AFCM 2013. Composer Ben Wallfisch’s Chopin’s Waterloo will be the fourth performance of this major work, co-commissioned by the AFCM, the Wimbledon Festival in , the Sitka Summer Music Festival in Alaska and the El Paso Promusica Festival in Texas.

For the first time we filmed five days of the festival and now have a short 6’ film that we will launch with the 2013 season, a lovely calling card that gives a great taste of the AFCM experience.

Our government partners, Tourism and Events Queensland, Arts Queensland, Townsville City Council and the Australia Council for the Arts all supported AFCM again and we were particularly pleased to see the relationship with Tourism and Events Queensland take a big step up with their recognising AFCM as a major event and therefore increased funding from 2013.

As always I am very grateful to our philanthropic supporters and our sponsors, the AFCM Board, the small team running the Festival as well as our volunteers and interns. All of them bring something that contributes to a deservedly much loved event. Keeping all the plates spinning is always the challenge and 2012 saw the AFCM in fine form.
