English All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A commonplace observation among historians describes one or another historical period as a time of “transition” or a particular person as a “transitional figure.” In the history of the United States Army, scholars apply those terms especially to the late- nineteenth century “Old Army.” This categorization has helped create a shelf of biographies of some of the transitional figures of the era. Leonard Wood, John J. Pershing, Robert Lee Bullard, William Harding Carter, Henry Tureman Allen, Nelson Appleton Miles and John McCallister Schofield have all been the subject of excellent scholarly works. Tasker Howard Bliss has remained among the missing in that group, in spite of the important activities that marked his career and the wealth of source materials he left behind. Bliss belongs on that list because, like the others, his career demonstrates the changing nature of the U.S. Army between 1871 and 1917. Bliss served for the most part in administrative positions in the United States and in the American overseas empire. -

2014 Annual Report SOLD Five sell-out seasons,including Bellini’s Norma, new OUT Australian opera The Riders, Sondheim’s Into the Woods, children’s production Hansel and Gretel and youth opera The Play of Herod. In partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne, Victorian Opera staged the first ‘relaxed performance’ for children with disabilities attempted in Victoria with children’s production Hansel and Gretel. Two new works staged: Iain Grandage and Alison Croggon’s The Riders, co-produced with Malthouse Theatre, and Richard Mills’ The Play of Herod. Children’s production Hansel and Gretel was staged in a special performance at The Royal Children’s Hospital. Aspiring singers from across Melbourne and regional Victoria joined Victorian Opera and Orchestra Victoria to perform in The Big Sing at Hamer Hall. Regional community choir workshops and masterclasses conducted in Mildura, Wodonga, Stawell, Bendigo and Warragul. The Riders received critical acclaim and two Green Room Awards including ‘New Australian Opera’. The second intake of the National Graduate Opera Program, including seven opera singers and a répétiteur, commenced their Master of Music (Opera Performance) delivered in partnership between Victorian Opera and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne. Was there lots of music around you when you were growing up? Yeah, a lot. My mother was a ballet dancer. My uncle Alastair [Mackerras] who lived downstairs was the Headmaster of Sydney Grammar, and he would drive me to school. He was a classical music fanatic. He owned thousands and thousands of CDs, from A to Z, and he was so methodical about it. So, I learnt a hell of a lot of music. Alexander Briger. Photo © Cameron Grayson What instrument did you play? I played violin but I didn’t really take it all that seriously, I have to say. I was much more into aeroplanes, that sort of thing. My uncle was Charles Mackerras, although I didn’t really know him well, he didn’t live here. He would come home to conduct the Sydney Symphony or the opera occasionally. I remember when I was 12, I was taken to a concert that he gave, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the Sydney Symphony, and that was the first concert that I was allowed to go to. I remember just being completely blown away by it and that’s when I started to take music very seriously and to think about conducting. -

Some of these people have been involved in music for ten years or more, others not so long. The idea was to discuss background and development, as well as current and long-term musical projects. Benedict Moleta [email protected] Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Were you born in Perth ? Yeah, I was born in Mt Lawley. You've been working on a music documentary for a while now, what's it about ? I started shooting footage mid 2008. I'm making a feature documentary about a bunch of bands over a period of time, it's an unscientific longitudinal study of sorts. It's a long process because I want to make an observational documentary with the narrative structure of a fiction film. I'm trying to capture a coming of age cliché but character arcs take a lot longer in real life. I remember reading once that rites of passage are good things to structure narratives around, so that's what I'm going to do, who am I to argue with a text book? Fair call. I guess one of the characteristics of bands developing or "coming of age" is that things can emerge, change, pass away and be reconfigured quickly. -

The oboe is a notoriously tricky instrument with several parameters that make it hard to master, none more so than the temperamental double reed at the top. These are hand- made by the oboist from a weed similar to bamboo (Arundo Donax for those playing at home). There are but a handful of oboists in the world who are invited to perform as soloists outside of their country, and Diana is one of them. One of my first trips to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as a teenager was to witness Diana perform the Richard Strauss Oboe Concerto. I marvelled at her gloriously resonant oboe sound, especially as she was 37 weeks pregnant! Nearly a decade later I watched Diana premiere Ross Edwards' Oboe Concerto, dressed (as instructed by the composer) as a wild bird, whilst undertaking dance choreography. I can’t think of any other oboist in the world who can pull off these jaw-dropping feats. Today, Diana performs the most famous work from the oboe repertoire - Mozart's Oboe Concerto in C. Diana is one of those oboists who makes the instrument sound like a human voice, and I have no doubt that you will enjoy her breathtaking rendition of this charming yet virtuosic concerto. -
