Position Description: The Recreation and Heritage Programs Resource Assistant will support both the recreation and heritage programs on the Payette National Forest. The hired individual will be assigned, about half of their time, to projects that support and/or enhance public recreation and half of their time to projects that support the heritage program. Projects may include: condition surveys for recreation infrastructure; field survey, data collection, and writing draft design narratives for projects proposed for Great American Outdoors Act funding; database input and management; documenting accomplishments funded by REA funds; assisting District recreation and trails crews with maintenance and/or survey; assisting the Heritage staff with field work and documentation; updating and managing hard copy and electronic files.

Term Length:  September 21, 2020 – March 19, 2021  Selected RA must serve a minimum of 960 Hours to be considered eligible for the Direct Hire and Noncompetitive Hiring Authorities.

Assignments for this intern during their entire experience include:  Coordinate with recreation staff on the forest to develop funding proposals for the Great American Outdoors Act. This may include field survey for either recreation and/or heritage, data collection, and/or writing draft design narratives.  Assist with addressing the backlog of heritage survey forms, including digitizing the information into GIS, and scanning reports/site records for electronic access.  Database management, including: o Using SUDS to maintain information on recreation special use permits. o Entering Trail Condition and Assessment Survey (TRACS) data into NRM. o Heritage NRM database training and management.

 Review files to update GIS of permit areas for outfitter and guides.  Update and improve the Payette National Forest webpages for recreation and heritage. This may also include improved information for campgrounds on Recreation.gov and/or OnCell app data.  Coordinate with recreation staff in documenting accomplishments of projects funded by the Recreation Enhancement Act. Qualifications:  An independent, self-motivated, creative, and resourceful individual.  Knowledge of recreation management preferred. Archaeology/historic architecture interest or experience ideal.  Basic GIS skills required.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Excellent organizational and computer skills.  Able to work with diverse groups of people.

Program Benefits  NYC will provide RA a total stipend of $12,000, prorated monthly, along with health care coverage, workers' compensation and FICA.

 Travel and training funds of $5000 are available to the hired RA.

 Upon verification of 960 hours of service, RA will be issued a Noncompetitive Hiring Authority and Direct Hire Authority, which can be used to apply for vacancies.

 Housing may be available.

Position Requirements  A desire to serve and promote public land stewardship and an ethic of service.  Communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with various populations such as: project partner(s), colleagues, community volunteers, youth and the general public.  A commitment to the goals of the U.S. Forest Service.  A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a team.  The ability to work independently.  A willingness to ask questions for clarification and job completion.  Work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.  Ability to commit to the full term of service.  U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.  Possession of a college degree, or near completion. 2

About the Payette National Forest The Payette National Forest contains some of Idaho’s most beautiful and diverse country. Located north of Boise in west-central Idaho, the 2.3-million-acre forest extends 100 miles west to east, from Hells Canyon to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. The forest stretches 70 miles between the Main Salmon River to the north and the Weiser River to the south. There are five Ranger Districts, approximately 200 permanent employees, and over 150 temporary seasonal employees during the summer field season.
