Library of Congress Interview with J.D. Bindenagel The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Foreign Affairs Oral History Project AMBASSADOR J.D. BINDENAGEL Interviewed by: Charles Stuart Kennedy Initial interview date: February 3, 1998 Copyright 2002 ADST Q: Today is February 3, 1998. The interview is with J.D. Bindenagel. This is being done on behalf of The Association for Diplomatic Studies. I am Charles Stuart Kennedy. J.D. and I are old friends. We are going to include your biographic sketch that you included at the beginning, which is really quite full and it will be very useful. I have a couple of questions to begin. While you were in high school, what was your interest in foreign affairs per se? I know you were talking politics with Mr. Frank Humphrey, Senator Hubert Humphrey's brother, at the Humphrey Drugstore in Huron, South Dakota, and all that, but how about foreign affairs? BINDENAGEL: I grew up in Huron, South Dakota and foreign affairs in South Dakota really focused on our home town politician Senator and Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Frank, Hubert Humphrey's brother, was our connection to Washington, DC, and the center of American politics. We followed Hubert's every move as Senator and Vice President; he of course was very active in foreign policy, and the issues that concerned South Dakota's farmers were important to us. Most of farmers' interests were in their wheat sales, and when we discussed what was happening with wheat you always had to talk about the Russians, who were buying South Dakota wheat.

  • Inscribed Silver Plate from Tomb Ii at Vergina 337
hesperia yy (2008) INSCRIBED SILVER PLATE p*ges 335~358 FROM TOMB II AT VERGINA Chronological Implications ABSTRACT Five items of silver plate from tomb II at Vergina are inscribed with their ancient weights. The inscriptions, using the acrophonic and alphabetic systems, suggest that the pieces were made to a drachmaweight of ca. 4.2 g. This weight of drachmawas introducedto Macedoniaby Alexanderthe Great and does not appearto have been used by Philip II. The inscriptions on the silver add to the cumulative evidence provided by the cremated remains, black-gloss saltcellars, and iconographyof the lion-hunt frieze that tomb II was the final resting place not of Philip II, but of Philip III Arrhidaios and Adea Eurydike. The excavationsby Manolis Andronikosat Vergina, the likely site of Aigai, have providedsubstantial evidence for the burialsof membersof the Macedonianroyal family.1The wealth that has emergedfrom the excavationof tomb II, the so-calledTomb of Philip II that lay beneath the GreatTumulus at Vergina, has been awe-inspiring.The gold larnax, ivory-decoratedcouch, gold-decorated purple cloth, and silverplate point - - to the burialof an individualof high and surelyroyal statusin Mace- doniansociety. • Using Personal Ancestral File (PAF) 5.2 by Terry Mason - 3 Dec
Using Personal Ancestral File (PAF) 5.2 by Terry Mason - 3 Dec. 2005 On July 23rd, 2002 the PAF development team in Salt Lake City announced that PAF 5.2 was now ready for download from the Web site at www.familysearch.org. The list of enhancements is: • The program is more compatible with newer versions of the Windows operating systems, particularly Windows XP, • The file of LDS temples and their starting dates has been updated to include new temples, • Additional "HELP" files have been added, • The "Global Search and Replace" function now works for names, temple codes, and notes. • Attributes for the predefined custom events can now be edited, • The "Match/Merge" function has been enhanced, • Support for the Input Method Editors for non-roman languages has been improved, and • For LDS Church members, the TempleReady Update Files (OUP files) can now be used to update your PAF database with completed ordinance dates. The most significant of all of these enhancements is the option to update or submit records using a GEDCOM created by PAF through TempleReady for Windows. When the Ordinance Index contains data that is used to modify the personal records, a special file with the .OUP file extension is created. This file can be used to update a PAF database with the dates and temples. This is particularly useful for individuals who are unable to bring a backup of their complete database to a family history center. 1. How do you load PAF onto a home computer? PAF 5 is available using a browser with an Internet connection.

  • Slaves, Sex, and Transgression in Greek Old Comedy
Slaves, Sex, and Transgression in Greek Old Comedy By Daniel Christopher Walin A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Classics in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mark Griffith, Chair Professor Donald J. Mastronarde Professor Kathleen McCarthy Professor Emily Mackil Spring 2012 1 Abstract Slaves, Sex, and Transgression in Greek Old Comedy by Daniel Christopher Walin Doctor of Philosophy in Classics University of California, Berkeley Professor Mark Griffith, Chair This dissertation examines the often surprising role of the slave characters of Greek Old Comedy in sexual humor, building on work I began in my 2009 Classical Quarterly article ("An Aristophanic Slave: Peace 819–1126"). The slave characters of New and Roman comedy have long been the subject of productive scholarly interest; slave characters in Old Comedy, by contrast, have received relatively little attention (the sole extensive study being Stefanis 1980). Yet a closer look at the ancestors of the later, more familiar comic slaves offers new perspectives on Greek attitudes toward sex and social status, as well as what an Athenian audience expected from and enjoyed in Old Comedy. Moreover, my arguments about how to read several passages involving slave characters, if accepted, will have larger implications for our interpretation of individual plays. The first chapter sets the stage for the discussion of "sexually presumptive" slave characters by treating the idea of sexual relations between slaves and free women in Greek literature generally and Old Comedy in particular. I first examine the various (non-comic) treatments of this theme in Greek historiography, then its exploitation for comic effect in the fifth mimiamb of Herodas and in Machon's Chreiai.
