Whether we spend years of our lives tuning in every week, or a few days bingeing through a storyworld, TV finales act as sites of negotiation between the forces of media production and consumption. By tracing a history of finales from the first Golden Age of American television to our contemporary era of complex TV, my project provides the first book- length study of TV finales as a distinct category of narrative media. This dissertation uses finales to understand how tensions between the emotional and economic imperatives of participatory culture complicate our experiences of television. The opening chapter contextualizes TV finales in relation to existing ideas about narrative closure, examines historically significant finales, and describes the ways that TV endings create meaning in popular culture. Chapter two looks at how narrative anticipation motivates audiences to engage communally in paratextual spaces and share processes of closure.

  • New Style in Sitcom Exploring Genre Terms of Contemporary American Comedy TV Series Through Their Utilization of Documentary Style
Institutionen för studier av samhällsutveckling och kultur – ISAK LiU Norrköping New Style in Sitcom exploring genre terms of contemporary American comedy TV series through their utilization of documentary style Johanna Sander 2014 Masteruppsats från Masterprogram i Kultur och mediegestaltning Linköpings universitet, LiU Norrköping, 601 74 NORRKÖPING “New Style in Sitcom - exploring genre terms of contemporary American comedy TV series through their utilization of documentary style” Abstract: Through exploring the use of documentary style in a selection of contemporary American comedy series, this thesis closes in on the question whether texts that stylistically differ from traditional sitcom can still be regarded as part of the sitcom genre. The contemporary American TV series that are being analyzed are The Office, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Michael J. Fox Show. As the series’ place within sitcom becomes apparent, the analysis ultimately leads to a critical investigation of the term “comedy verite.” Questioning the concepts applicability for the American series and their development leads to the investigation of new definitions. This analysis of contemporary televisual styles reveals a myriad of deeper issues and elucidates how stylistic developments point towards broader developments of the TV medium – towards a medium more and more defined by, or even drenched in, “reality.” Table of contents 0 Prologue 1 1 Introduction 2 1-1 Aims 5 1-2 Questions 5 1-3 Method and Theory 6 1-4 Delimitation 9 1-5 Disposition 14 2 Background 15 2-1 Television Studies 15 2-2 Stylistics: TV-style and methods of style analysis 17 2-3 Genre and Genre Theory 20 2-4 Television Series 24 2-5 Television History and Sitcom 27 2-6 Comedy and Sitcom 32 3 Previously on… 36 3-1 The Office (UK) and Comedy Verite 36 3-2 Arrested Development and Comedy Verite 41 3-3 New Comedy and The Office (US) 47 4 Next time on… 54 4-1 Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine 54 4-2 Modern Family 62 4-3 The Michael J.

One person said they were concerned about the state of the Re- publican Party, especially as it regarded Trump’s influence and con- spiracy theories surrounding the election. They mentioned that the Republican Party is currently more concerned with “owning the libs,” than providing compromise and bipartisan solutions. Moore acknowledged this is a concern that many people have. “Too much of what our party is trying to accomplish gets lost in Page 2 - The Utah Statesman March 29, 2021 March Statesman Utah 2 - The Page the message, in the media and with respect to former President Trump.” Moore said he was asked frequently during his campaign if he supported Trump.

A local woman and students from Mountain High School are working hard on creating a haunted house to “scare” up funds for clubs and other needs at the school. “Me and my friend and brother are really into Halloween,” said Katie Shaw who is using her own yard as a big spook alley. “We were looking at props in a storage unit in Kaysville and the woman selling it had cancer and couldn’t do the haunted house anymore. All the proceeds were going to Mountain High School. We ended up buying the whole thing, including the charity portion.” Last year was the first for Shadows of Fear. “The Mountain High kids have been very involved from beginning to end,” said Shaw.
