The following are direct extracts from "It Happened Here" by Stanley Tiquet. Any explanatory notes are the editor's and in italics. THE GREAT ATTACK A Night of Fire On the afternoon of Saturday, September 7th 1940, the massed forces of the Luftwaffe struck at London. They came just after 5 o’clock in the afternoon. The day was warm and sunny; the sky blue. Many people were out of doors. A monstrous monotonous droning proclaimed the coming of the bombers. They swept on south of the Borough. By 6 o'clock the skies were empty. But all Thameside blazed. Wanstead and Woodford, so far immune, awaited the night. Soon after 8 o'clock the enemy struck again, the airmen flame-guided to their target of the afternoon-;the docks and the small homes of the East End. As the sun began to sink, the vast expanse of the red glow in the sky to west and southwest sent a chill to the heart. It seemed that all London was burning. And this time, the enemy, before his roaring procession had ended at 4.30 a.m., had set fires blazing in Wanstead and Woodford and some of our neighbours were dead or lay buried beneath the ruins of their shattered homes. Civil Defence faced its first real test and, without previous experience to guide it, came creditably through the ordeal. It dealt not only with local incidents, but also sent reinforcing parties to East Ham, West Ham and Poplar. Wanstead High Street area suffered chiefly on that first niqht, and Post 35 was heavily involved.

Coopersale Hall School Flux’s Lane, Epping Essex CM16 7PE Tel: 01992 577133 Fax: 01992 571544 HEADMISTRESS E-mail: [email protected] MISS KAYE LOVEJOY CERT.ED., B.ED. (HONS) Website: www.coopersalehallschool.co.uk May 2018 Dear Parents Although it has only been two weeks since my April letter at the start of term, there are a number of important things to share in the Headmistress’s letter. Staff News This year we shall be saying farewell to several staff. Mrs Watson, Deputy Head and Year 6 teacher will be retiring after 18 years loyal service. We shall miss her input into all areas of school life and the tremendous care that she has put into the teaching of her classes. After 4 years working as our Head of Early Years, Mrs Pettigrew has decided to retire to the New Forest. I am grateful for both of their hard work over the years and wish them well as they move slowly towards life beyond Coopersale Hall and retirement. I shall be announcing Mrs Watson’s successor shortly. Mrs Pettigrew’s successor will be Miss Charlotte Gowland. Miss Gowland has had a wide range of experience teaching nursery and reception children both in this country and abroad. She is joining us from the CHAT Academy Trust where she has been in charge of the 4-form entry reception year, as well as being PGCE mentor. Mrs Mottram will also be leaving Coopersale Hall at the end of the academic year and I would like to thank her for her dedication to the children throughout her eight years with us.

A Broad Rental Market Area is an area ‘within which a person could reasonably be expected to live having regard to facilities and services for the purposes of health, education, recreation, personal banking and shopping, taking account of the distance of travel, by public and private transport, to and from those facilities and services.’ A BRMA must contain ‘residential premises of a variety of types, including such premises held on a variety of tenures’, plus ‘sufficient privately rented residential premises, to ensure that, in the rent officer’s opinion, the LHA for the area is representative of the rents that a landlord might reasonably be expected to obtain in that area’. [Legislation - Rent Officers (Housing Benefit Functions) Amendment (No.2) Order 2008] OUTER EAST LONDON Broad Rental Market Area (BRMA) implemented on 1st October 2009 Map of the BRMA Overview of the BRMA The above map shows Stratford, Walthamstow, Leyton, West Ham, East Ham and their surroundings within a boundary marked in red. Predominantly residential, the BRMA measures approximately nine miles from north to south and about four miles from east to west. As Stratford will host the Olympic Games in 2012, investment is currently underway to bring commercial, employment and transport improvements to the area. Docklands is located further south and contains City Airport and the Excel Centre. Docklands is a business district of significance and of importance for the country as a whole. This BRMA is situated in Transport for London Zone 3. Public transport is plentiful with four underground lines connecting in all directions, supplemented by an overground rail system connecting Walthamstow to Stratford and then eastwards towards Leytonstone.

We have also seen the building registered as an Asset of Community Value thanks to hard working community activists. In less positive news, it is concerning that Waltham Forest conservation officers recently suggested at a recorded meeting they have not been consulted on the plans. The council’s financial figures are also coming under scrutiny as they advise it would cost £5.6 million to refurbish the current Chingford Hall and Library but just £3.1 million to build and fit out an entirely new facility (£2.5 million cheaper).
