Aemilius Thewrewk congesserat usus, ea quae Festi truncatus codex servat et ea quae Paulus Diaconus Carolo Magno regi ex pleno codice excerpsit quam fidelissime philologis exhibui (Teubn. 1913), tum promisi me in altero volumine maiera esse adgressurum, ut, quatenus possem, ea quae Festus scripsit adumbrarem, glossariorum imprimis saec. vii-vm conscriptorum adiumento usus. Eheu, quam breve iter mihi tunc visus sum ingredi ; quam longum, quam salebrosum reipsa sum expertus ! Nam quamvis bene Goetz fundamenta glossographicae doctrinae jecisset (Corp. Gloss. Lai., 1-VII), aedificia erant superponenda, Glossarium Ansileubi — urbis illud quidem, non aedificii instar — erat publicandum, Glossarium Abolita a Glossario Abstrusa secernendum, denique cetera glossa­ ria diligentius investiganda, ut Festinas e vasta congerie glossas aliqua ratione eruerem quae et mihi et tibi, lector, satis placeret. Quo igitur testimonio sim fretus audi. 1. DE FESTI CODICE. Quid Festus scripserit testatur imprimis unicus qui extat Festi codex Nea­ politanus (IV A 3) sive Farnesianus, exaratus scriptura quae dicitur Farfensi, et, si vera fama est, ex Illyrico in Italiam saeculo xv advectus. Neque habeo cur negem eum codicem in Illyrico scriptorio oriri potuisse, cum scriptura Far- fensis, de qua disputavi in Palae. Lat. III, nonsolum inRomana regione,sed trans mare Adriaticum in usu fuisse videatur. Ne dimidia quidem pars codicis superest, et illa quidem igne mutilata; sed triumquaternionum qui nunc desunt apogr.aqiha manent, qualiacumque, saeculo xv facta. Qui tamen ea fecerunt limis oculis Pauli epitomam respexisse videntur, difficiliores lectu partes inde aut sumpsisse aut emendasse, otii quam veritatis studiosiores. Solum illud apographum quod Politianus scripsit lacunarum in Festi codice magnitudinem diligenter, non tamen omnino fideliter exhibet. Cave igitur agnoscas duos sem- per testes in apographorum cum epitoma consensu (cf. ad 114,5). In ipso qui superest codice sequi solent binas plenas paginarum columellas — interiores scilicet — binae — scilicet exteriores — igne ita adesae ut nonnisi dimidiae versuum partes supersint. ABSTRACT The Invisibility of Juvenal James Uden This dissertation offers a reading of Juvenal’s Satires. It maintains that Juvenal consciously frustrates readers’ attempts to identify his poetic voice with a single unitary character or persona.     JULIUS CAESAR I. IN the course of his sixteenth year [c. 85/84 B.C.] he lost his father. In the next consulate, having previously been nominated priest of Jupiter [by Marius and Cinna, Cos. 86], he broke his engagement with Cossutia, a lady of only equestrian rank, but very wealthy, who had been betrothed to him before he assumed the gown of manhood, and married Cornelia, daughter of that Cinna who was four times consul, by whom he afterwards had a daughter Julia; and the dictator Sulla could by no means force him to put away his wife. Therefore besides being punished by the loss of his priesthood, his wife's dowry, and his family inheritances, Caesar was held to be one of the opposite party. He was accordingly forced to go into hiding, and though suffering from a severe attack of quartan ague, to change from one covert to another almost every night, and save himself from Sulla's detectives by bribes. But at last, through the good offices of the Vestal virgins and of his near kinsmen, Mamercus Aemilius and Aurelius Cotta, he obtained forgiveness. Everyone knows that when Sulla had long held out against the most devoted and eminent men of his party who interceded for Caesar, and they obstinately persisted, he at last gave way and cried, either by divine inspiration or a shrewd forecast: 'Have your way and take him; only bear in mind that the man you are so eager to save will one day deal the death blow to the cause of the aristocracy, which you have joined with me in upholding; for in this Caesar there is more than one Marius.' This political culture forms the essential backdrop to the public response of the equester ordo to monarchy and the succession. At about age fifteen (28–27 B .C.), Ovid followed his father into the Roman Forum to assume the toga and the latus clavus, the broad tunic stripe signify- ing that he would seek senatorial office.     A FUNNY THING HAPPENED IN THE THEATRE Frank Sear Based on the H.W. Allen Memorial Lecture Ormond College, 14 October 2010 Many funny things happened in the theatre. Indeed the theatre seems to have been a fairly riotous place at the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 2nd century BCE when at the plays of Plautus and Terence were performed. However it will be argued in this paper that the theatre became the most prestigious entertainment venue by the time of the Julio-Claudians. There are a number of reasons for this, but firstly a word about the main competing forms of entertainment. One form of entertainment was the gladiatorial games and beast hunts (uenationes) which were held in the amphitheatre. The atmosphere of the amphitheatre seems to have been quite informal. Men could sit with women, and eating and drinking do not seem to have been frowned on. Excavations in the Colosseum have revealed plates, bowls, glass beakers, spoons, the stones of peaches, olives, cherries and walnuts, as well as grape-pips, pig and chicken bones, and oyster shells. Quintilian tells a story of Augustus who saw a Roman knight drink- ing at the games.1 He sent him the following message: ‘If I want to dine, I go home.’ To which the other replied: ‘Yes, but you are not afraid of losing your seat.’ Gladiatorial shows were immensely popular, in some cases more popular than theatrical performances. In a theatre in the early 2nd century BCE a rumour was spread that a gladiato- rial show was about to start.2 Immediately the audience scrambled to leave the theatre and the performance had to be abandoned.
