Semaine De Kiel 2011 Rocket Start for Lobert Semaine de Kiel 2011 Jour 1 par Corinne Rolland-McKenzie Rocket start for Lobert The seventh and last event in the ISAF Sailing World Cup circuit, started in full gear with three difficult races sailed in shifty and wet conditions in Kiel. Jonathan Lobert (FRA), scored a near perfect day with a fifth in the first race followed by two bullets in heavy showers. Only a week after a seventh place at the Sail For Gold regatta and a tough selection for the Olympic test event, the french doesn't stop there, keen to better his results at this year Sailing World Cup circuit. Beijing Silver medallist, Zach Railey (USA) opened the score today winning the first race from Ed Wright (GBR). The American has claimed the top of the ISAF World ranking at the start of the month from Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO), absent from Kiel. Railey who has participated in six out of the seven SWC regattas is coming to Kiel in fourth place in the overall SWC standings. A ninth and a second in the following races place him five points from Lobert and only a point from Thomas Le Breton. Last year Sailing World Cup winner and current world Champion Ed Wright (GBR) is in fourth position, a point away from the podium. Zach Railey young team mate Caleb Paine (USA) commented on the first racing day in Kiel. “ It was tough racing out there with lots of shifts and rain showers, and puffs and lulls; there were many opportunities for making gains especially on the first beat and run. At one stage during the second race, it rained so much upwind that we couldn't see the weather mark until we were fairly close to it! It was tough for everybody but it is all part of sailing!” About his racing, Caleb Paine admits that his objective in the regatta is top 5. The 21 years old has started in the Finn in 2009 with Kiel week as his first international event. This year, an intense training with Zach Railey has been paying its dividend, with Paine placing 10th in the Rolex Miami OCR and 11th at the Delta Lloyd regatta. He is in seventh place after a solid start and a fourth place. Three races are scheduled in Kiel tomorrow with gusty winds and more difficult conditions that could easily reshuffle the leader-board position. .

Where on earth has the summer gone? I am pleased to say the Club has been busy all through August with visiting teams, the WOEC and mem- bers sailing during the week. With good weather at the weekends it has been great to see people enjoying the garden and using the bar on Sunday afternoons. The wind was not very kind for the Ladies Race which was a challenge for those that took part and all those that finished should be congratulated. The Finn Nationals were a great success and thanks must go to all those that worked so hard to make the Finn sailors welcome. I am particularly pleased it was such a good event as it was Dave Dunn’s last one as Chairman of the Championship Committee as he has decided that having done the job for over 10 years it was time to step down. I am sure you will all support me in giving a huge thanks to Dave who has worked so hard for all the local Clubs and masterminded some superb events.

  • 2015 President and Chairman's Report
PRESIDENT and CHAIRMAN’S REPORT – 2014/15 It has been a year of considerable change for South African Sailing (SAS). Having inherited a strong base the present Council has been determined to further grow sailing and develop wind borne water activities into a premier sporting code in South Africa with international reach. Some notable achievements include:- 1. Developing and widely disseminating a SAS Strategy completed with the assistance of Clem Sunter, the renowned futurologist. 2. Restructuring the Council to become representative of all disciplines of sailing by co-opting leading proponents of kite boarding, keel boats and multi- hulls to join the already strong representation for dinghy sailing. 3. Appointed our first Councillor with an absolute focus on the Transformation of our sport not just in terms of ethnicity but equally with respect to gender and our disabled community. 4. Realigned the regional sailing boundaries to match national Constitutional boundaries so making sailing fit our country’s new political dispensation for the first time. This will not only align our administrative structures and facilitate optimal governmental fund raising; it will most importantly provide a proper political foundation for our Transformation ambitions. 5. Launched the District Development Program to grow sailing through clubs and regions. 6. Established the SA Sailing Team providing clarity to the criteria for Olympic qualification. 7. Set out clearly the requirements and the programme to be selected to represent South Africa at the Youth Worlds. 8. Making a start on addressing improved Communications. It is worth restating the SAS Strategy in bullet form:- 1. Professionalise the management and administration of all aspects of the sport including appointing a CEO of SAS.
