There are more than 80 teams registered representing nearly 20 countries! This is a reflection of how far our Class has come in four short years. If you thought the US was home to all J/70 mega regattas, this is no longer the case. The European Associations have become deep and strong. There were over 90 teams that competed in the European Championship at Kiel Week in late June, and the European NCAs recently voted to host a European Championship every year. Finally, our Class is receiving some very positive exposure with the reinvented International Women’s Keelboat Championship using J/70s as the platform for this year’s regatta that was hosted by American Yacht Club in Rye, New York. The event included several days of practice and coaching for all teams. This too should enhance our growth around the world. Starting the day in third place, Everett, with crew members Alix Hahn, Carolyn Russell and Erin Sprague, finished the elimination stage of the championship with 73 points over 20 races and won two of the final stage’s three races to capture the championship. “Wednesday’s racing was coming right off the shore so it was very shifty,” said Everett. “Alix sailed at Tufts.     PRESIDENT and CHAIRMAN’S REPORT – 2014/15 It has been a year of considerable change for South African Sailing (SAS). Having inherited a strong base the present Council has been determined to further grow sailing and develop wind borne water activities into a premier sporting code in South Africa with international reach. Some notable achievements include:- 1. Developing and widely disseminating a SAS Strategy completed with the assistance of Clem Sunter, the renowned futurologist. 2. Restructuring the Council to become representative of all disciplines of sailing by co-opting leading proponents of kite boarding, keel boats and multi- hulls to join the already strong representation for dinghy sailing. 3. Appointed our first Councillor with an absolute focus on the Transformation of our sport not just in terms of ethnicity but equally with respect to gender and our disabled community. 4. Realigned the regional sailing boundaries to match national Constitutional boundaries so making sailing fit our country’s new political dispensation for the first time. This will not only align our administrative structures and facilitate optimal governmental fund raising; it will most importantly provide a proper political foundation for our Transformation ambitions. 5. Launched the District Development Program to grow sailing through clubs and regions. 6. Established the SA Sailing Team providing clarity to the criteria for Olympic qualification. 7. Set out clearly the requirements and the programme to be selected to represent South Africa at the Youth Worlds. 8. Making a start on addressing improved Communications. It is worth restating the SAS Strategy in bullet form:- 1. Professionalise the management and administration of all aspects of the sport including appointing a CEO of SAS.

    Portsmouth Number List 2019 The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the typical performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. Experimental numbers are based on fewer returns and are to be used as a guide for clubs to allocate as a starting number before reviewing and adjusting where necessary. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received via PY Online. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only. The RYA list is not definitive and clubs should adjust where necessary.     AUSTRALIAN SAILING – IRC REPORT Glen Stanaway The main issue being addressed head on is the declining take up of certification amongst existing fleets and events globally. Australian Sailing’s management team has been working hard to reverse the situation in Australia by writing articles and producing YouTube clips for media to members, race officials and clubs. The intention is to create a ‘constant conversation’ domestically about ratings raising their prominence and place in boat owners’ and clubs’ minds. We expect that the results of this won’t be seen for 18 months to two years as it is a ‘long game’ and will take time to imprint the benefits of being rated and racing in these divisions in owners’ minds. Belgium Report for IRC in 2016 The fleet: • Number of IRC certificates on 31/08/2015: 56 (-24% compared to IRC fleet 2014) • Number of IRC certificates on 30/09/2016 : 44 (-21%/-41% compared to IRC fleet 2015/2014) • Number of new IRC boats (Age date 2016): 0 (0% of IRC fleet 2016) • Number of new IRC boats (no IRC certificate in 2015): 5 (11% of IRC fleet 2016) • Number of non-renewals 2015-2016: 23 (41% of IRC fleet 2015) The number of Belgian IRC boats that is racing regularly has decreased to below 20. This number is becoming critically low. Besides the regular racers a small number of boats is choosing racing events on an ad hoc basis and is sometimes asking an IRC certificate for one event only. The number of boats that raced occasionally in IRC in 2014 or 2015, and that stopped racing in IRC or in all rating systems in 2016 is significant, as is the number of boats that stopped sailing all together.

    Kiel Earth Institute Fellowship The Kiel Earth Institute (KEI) offers two Visiting Fellowships for established scientists from abroad. The Fellowships are awarded for a period of four weeks to three months and is tenable during September 2009 and March 2010. The fellowships are intended for highly-qualified established scientists from all disciplines, whose research interests are in the area of the research scope of the KEI. Who can apply? The KEI Visiting Fellowship is open to established scientists from all disciplines. The applicant is expected to work with KEI fellows on topics matching with the research interests of the KEI. The applications are assessed by the KEI executive board. The candidates are chosen on the basis of their background and experience, the quality and feasibility of their research proposal as well as the relation of the research topic to the research themes of the KEI.
