As usual, things get underway with the Autumn Regatta that will be held on 10 and 11 September. Sign-on will be on the day and if you would like to volunteer for the regatta please contact the Sailing Office. It was a busy summer on all fronts for the Club – while a lot of results and reports are still coming in, to pick The Bridge a few highlights: Congratulations to all members of the Shark squad who competed in overseas events, notably Duncan Gregor who came 3rd in the Senior Fleet of the Volvo Gill Optimist British National and Open Championships. Congratulations also to two junior rowers, Kenny Liu and James Wong, who represented Hong Kong to race in the Asian Cup winning three gold medals between them. It should also be noted that Hong Kong also won the overall ASAF Youth Sailing Cup 2015/16 Series taking home the trophy for the second year running! This success in both of our core sports is a testament to the focus the Club is placing on the next generation of sportspeople – hopefully we’ll be seeing a number of them in action at the Tokyo Olympics and beyond. Commodore Robert Stoneley As a reminder of the Club’s heritage and role in developing our sports, a team of veteran Club members, 會長史東禮 including Club Vice Patron Bob Wilson and a number of other past rowing captains, staged a reunion row-past during Henley Royal Regatta to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Hong Kong crew to compete at this prestigious event. Work on the Kellett Island Development Project has made good progress and the superstructure of the ‘East Wing Extension’ (over what was the Waterside) is now complete, with the topping out ceremony to be held this month. The windows and window frames will now be installed and the internal walls will be up by mid- October. Subject to government approvals, we are scheduled to open this building in January. As well as housing the new, enlarged gym and indoor children’s playroom, it will ultimately house the relocated bowling alley and bar; in the short term though, we will use the bowling alley area as a temporary casual dining venue while work on the Bistro takes place.

  • 2015 President and Chairman's Report
PRESIDENT and CHAIRMAN’S REPORT – 2014/15 It has been a year of considerable change for South African Sailing (SAS). Having inherited a strong base the present Council has been determined to further grow sailing and develop wind borne water activities into a premier sporting code in South Africa with international reach. Some notable achievements include:- 1. Developing and widely disseminating a SAS Strategy completed with the assistance of Clem Sunter, the renowned futurologist. 2. Restructuring the Council to become representative of all disciplines of sailing by co-opting leading proponents of kite boarding, keel boats and multi- hulls to join the already strong representation for dinghy sailing. 3. Appointed our first Councillor with an absolute focus on the Transformation of our sport not just in terms of ethnicity but equally with respect to gender and our disabled community. 4. Realigned the regional sailing boundaries to match national Constitutional boundaries so making sailing fit our country’s new political dispensation for the first time. This will not only align our administrative structures and facilitate optimal governmental fund raising; it will most importantly provide a proper political foundation for our Transformation ambitions. 5. Launched the District Development Program to grow sailing through clubs and regions. 6. Established the SA Sailing Team providing clarity to the criteria for Olympic qualification. 7. Set out clearly the requirements and the programme to be selected to represent South Africa at the Youth Worlds. 8. Making a start on addressing improved Communications. It is worth restating the SAS Strategy in bullet form:- 1. Professionalise the management and administration of all aspects of the sport including appointing a CEO of SAS.

  • 1O1O Next GTM Around the Island Race 2009
for immediate release 7 November 2017 Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race Sunday 12 November Over 230 entries have been received for the 2017 edition of the Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race which will take place this Sunday 12 November. This year, the Title Sponsor is Star Alliance member, Turkish Airlines. The partnership between Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (“Best Asian Yacht Club”) and Turkish Airlines (“The airline that flies to more countries than any other airline and the Skytrax award winner for four key categories in 2017”) will bring a lot of excitement to the Around the Island Race as the fleet flies around Hong Kong Island. Turkish Airlines is also sponsoring an Around the Island Race photography competition which will see one lucky person being chosen to win a return business class ticket from Hong Kong to any worldwide destination* operated by Turkish Airlines. Serhat Sari, General Manager of Turkish Airlines Hong Kong, said “we are very excited to be the Title Sponsor for Around the Island Race - the biggest public sailing event of the year in Hong Kong.” Mr. Sari continued, “This year is our 15th anniversary of operation in Hong Kong and we hope that through this sponsorship engagement with the sailing participants and a campaign with the public, will bring Turkish Airlines’ brand and service commitment even closer to this Asia’s World City. Anyone with the sight of the fleet from right at the waterfront in the harbor or from up on the Peak, or perhaps somewhere at the South Side stands a chance to snap that special photo and win.” This event is Hong Kong’s largest celebration of sail and will see Victoria Harbour filled to the brim with sailboats, before they set off on the 26nm circumnavigation of Hong Kong island.

The editors of the daily newsletter chose to republish my thoughts on “pinging” at the start of each race and Vice President the concept we as a Class have been discussing regarding a Corinthian Craig Tallman National Championship. The piece on “pinging” resulted in a call from Torrance, CA a marine electronics manufacturer who is interested in pursuing the 310-629-0365 [email protected] idea. The second concept created a lot of dialog for several weeks with many interested sailors including other Class Presidents, industry Secretary professionals and amateur sailors offering their opinions regarding the Kristen Robinson current state of sailing and how professionals of various ranks Arnold, MD are affecting our sport. This was never the intent of my piece; 516-816-3856 however, it did evoke some positive discussion among many sailors.
