  • Pindi Memoirs by a Sikh Son of the Soil -2
Pindi Memoirs by a Sikh Son of the Soil -2 Kanwarjit Singh Malik was born in Rawalpindi in 1930. His family moved to India at the time of Partition in 1947. He joined the Flying Club in Jalandhar, and was later selected by the Indian Air Force. After the retirement from the Air Force, he served as a senior captain in Air India and Air Lanka. Kanwarjit Singh Malik Editor’s note: This is a slightly edited version of an article that originally appeared at http://nativepakistan.com/pindi-memoirs-by-a-sikh-son-of-the-soil-part-2-rawalpindi-blog/, and is reproduced here with the author’s permission. Part 1 is available here. The details in this article are as told to me by my eldest brother Bhupinder Singh Malik, and my father Malik Mukhbain Singh, Bar-at-law. Our family of Ahluwalia Sikhs came from district Gujrat and settled in village Dera Khalsa and Dwalian (Tehsil Kahota, District Rawalpindi), which was gifted by the Muslim rulers of that time with title (Malik). My great-grandfather, Malik Khazan Singh, was born in Dera Khalsa in 1813. At the age of 20 or 25, he lost his father. His mother then sent him to Pindi with Rs.25. He decided to join Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army, with which he served and travelled up to Kabul, gaining experience. Then, he left the army and set up own business; by then the regions was controlled by the British. He married late. He had four sons and two daughters. His very close Malik relatives settled in Abbottabad, Ferozepur and some other parts of India.

A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Harjot S. Oberoi The Australian National University, Canberra March, 1987 This thesis is the result of my own research carried out while enrolled as a Ph.D candidate at the Australian National University, Canberra, December, 1982 to March, 1987. t) . ~ . c:i!:i.Ji~- Abstract The pluralistic paradigm of the Sikh faith for much of the nineteenth century allowed its adherents to belong to any one of the following traditions: U dasi, Nirmala, Suthresashi, Khalsa, Sangatsaihbie, Jitmalie, Bakhtatmlie, Mihansahie, Sahajdhari, Kuka and Sarvaria. Many of these Sikhs shaved their heads, freely smoked tobacco and hashish and were not particular about maintaing the five external symbols of the faith. In the absence of a centralized church and an attendant religious hierarchy, heterogeneity in religious beliefs, plurality of rituals, and diversity of life styles, were freely acknowledged. A pilgrimage to the Golden Temple could be supplemented with similar undertakings to the Ganges at Hardwar or the shrine of a Muslim saint. Attending seasonal festivals at Benares or Hardwar was in no way considered a transgression of prevailing Sikh doctrines, whatever teleological studies may like to assert today.

  • Pindi Memoirs by a Sikh Son of the Soil -1
Pindi Memoirs by a Sikh Son of the Soil -1 Kanwarjit Singh Malik was born in Rawalpindi in 1930. His family moved to India at the time of Partition in 1947. He joined the Flying Club in Jalandhar, and was later selected by the Indian Air Force. After the retirement from the Air Force, he served as a senior captain in Air India and Air Lanka. Kanwarjit Singh Malik Editor’s note: This is a slightly edited version of an article that originally appeared at http://nativepakistan.com/pindi-memoirs-by-a-sikh-son-of-the-soil-part-1-rawalpindi-blog/, and is reproduced here with the author’s permission. Part 2 is available here. I have recently read 19 episodes of “My Old but Ever New Pindi”, a series of “Nostalgic Articles about Rawalpindi” written by Rafique Khan Sahib, in the website Native Pakistan. Being a native of Pindi, these articles took me back to the good old days. Today, sitting in Foster City, near San Francisco, USA, at the home of my daughter, I remember Pindi as it was in my mind as I remember. In Rawalpindi, our Malik family was very well-known, especially my father Malik Mukhbain Singh. He had many Muslim friends, Mian Aslam and Mian Akram (Lakri taal walas, sellers of teak and other wood), Choudhry Maula Dad and all his brothers, and their father/uncle M. Azam Khan who was a member of the Cantonment Board. My father himself was a member of the Municipal Committee, and Director Rawalpindi Electric Supply Bus Company, which plied in the city.
