Herge continually teases with the idea of an adventure - there are Roma people living on the land with suspicious motives; there are shady men pursuing Castafiore; the diva herself is in fear that her emeralds will be stolen, and the actions of her entourage indicate something malevolent. Explorers on the Moon gave him his greatest artistic challenge; The Calculus Affair was the height of his skills as an artist; The Red Sea Sharks was a perfect story; and he capped all this off with the emotional study that is Tintin in Tibet The story is well- known by now: tiring, like Captain Haddock, of adventures, Herge decided to test his own skill by doing a story in which "nothing much happens". I think Herge relaxed a bit this one focusing on the interactions between the characters to drive the story instead of an actual mystery or adventure. The plight of the Roma is deftly handled, with Haddock quicker these days to learn from his prejudices. • Bovine Benefactories: an Examination of the Role of Religion in Cow Sanctuaries Across the United States
BOVINE BENEFACTORIES: AN EXAMINATION OF THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN COW SANCTUARIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES _______________________________________________________________ A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board _______________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY ________________________________________________________________ by Thomas Hellmuth Berendt August, 2018 Examing Committee Members: Sydney White, Advisory Chair, TU Department of Religion Terry Rey, TU Department of Religion Laura Levitt, TU Department of Religion Tom Waidzunas, External Member, TU Deparment of Sociology ABSTRACT This study examines the growing phenomenon to protect the bovine in the United States and will question to what extent religion plays a role in the formation of bovine sanctuaries. My research has unearthed that there are approximately 454 animal sanctuaries in the United States, of which 146 are dedicated to farm animals. However, of this 166 only 4 are dedicated to pigs, while 17 are specifically dedicated to the bovine. Furthermore, another 50, though not specifically dedicated to cows, do use the cow as the main symbol for their logo. Therefore the bovine is seemingly more represented and protected than any other farm animal in sanctuaries across the United States. The question is why the bovine, and how much has religion played a role in elevating this particular animal above all others. Furthermore, what constitutes a sanctuary? Does

Commissioned by the conservative Belgian newspaper Le Vingti'me Sicle for his children's supplement Le Petit Vingti'me, it was serialized weekly from August 1938 to August 1939. Gerge conceived this story as a satirical critique of nazi Germany's expansionist policies, in particular the annexation of Austria in March 1938 (Anschluss). The story tells the story of a young Belgian reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy, who go to the fictional Balkan nation of Sildavi, where they fight a conspiracy to overthrow the monarchy of King Muskar XII. Gerge continued Tintin's Adventures with the Land of Black Gold until the forced closure of Le Vingti'me Sicle in 1940, while the series itself became a defining part of the Franco-Belgian comic tradition. In 1947, Gerge was painted and repainted by King Ottokar's scepter in his distinctive ligne-claire style with the help of Edgar. Jacobs for The Casterman Republican. The story represents the recurring character Bianca Castafiore, and represented the fictional countries of Syldavia and Borduria, both of which appear in later stories.

ABSTRACT In this thesis, I intend to show that it is possible to offer a partial explanation for the fact that pre-war Polish-Jewish fiction has been recognised only to a very limited extent in Britain. In doing this, I embrace the limitations and unaddressed areas of polysystem theory, an approach that leads to several contributions to this theory so that it is more suited to look at marginal translations. In this study, the source context and the largely hypothetical target context (given the predominant lack of English translations) of pre-war Polish-Jewish fiction are conceptualised as systems informed by a variety of factors. I begin by introducing polysystem theory in Chapter 1, where I also explain the rationale for its use in this study. I also briefly define pre-war Polish-Jewish fiction and elaborate on the nature of its visibility in Britain.

Opera singer Bianca Castafiore has a guru: Endaddine Akass is handing his advice out to everyone, but Tintin doesn't buy it—especially when he realizes that Akass might be connected to the death of the owner of an art gallery, who had been on his way to see Tintin when he died. He and Tintin first meet in Cigars of the Pharaoh. It was implied that he did not survive after being shot by Sakharine's accomplices. Wolff is ultimately exposed as a spy who was coerced into helping an unnamed foreign power hijack the moon rockets he had helped build, after they learnt of his former compulsive gambling and heavy debt.
