(LAMIACEAE) FROM KASHMIR HIMALAYA REYAZ AHMAD MALIK*, RAGHBIR CHAND GUPTA, AND SANTOSH KUMARI Department of Botany, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India 147002 Received October 13, 2011; revision accepted February 17, 2012 Our cytomorphological study of various populations of Elsholtzia ciliata (Lamiaceae) collected from high-alti- tude sites of Kashmir Himalaya revealed two euploid cytomorphotypes, diploid (n=8) and tetraploid (n=16), growing sympatrically but inhabiting two different habitats. This is the first report of tetraploid (4×) E. ciliata from the Indian subcontinent. We found the course of meiois to be normal in diploids, but tetraploid individu- als showed chromosome and meiotic irregularities: cytomixis at early prophase I, stickiness at metaphase I, and chromosome bridges at anaphase I. In tetraploids, 23 of the 26 pollen mother cells observed at metaphase I showed 0–6 quadrivalents, suggesting that the tetraploid is a segmental allopolyploid. Microsporogenesis was also abnormal in tetraploids, showing the formation of triads. All these anomalies are conducive to lower repro- ductive potential (40.70%) in tetraploids than in diploids (90.50%). Significant morphological differences between the two cytotypes are presented. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Ukraine, 46001 Ternopil, Maidan Voli 1 *[email protected] Abstract The aim of this study was the comparative analysis of phenolic compounds in the Ocimum americanum and Monarda fistulosa herbs using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and the spectrophotometric evaluation of the total hydroxycinnamic derivatives (THD) contents. Rosmarinic acid (RAc) was the predominant phenolic compound of both investigated species. RAc (22.84±0.61 mg/g) commonly with luteolin-7-O-glucoside, acacetin-7-O-glucoside, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid can be considered as the quality markers of the Monarda fistulosa herb. The complex of polyphenols consisting of RAc (22.33±0.58 mg/g) followed by luteolin-7-O-glucoside, rutin and ferulic acid was specific to the Ocimum americanum herb. The THD content in the Monarda fistulosa herb (3.63±0.05 %) was higher comparatively to Ocimum americanum raw material (2.96±0.05 %). Plants belonging to Lamiaceae family are known as rich source of phenolic compounds. The current work aimed to evaluate the phenolic compounds, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyl. ethanolic extracts from leaf, stem, flower, and whole herb. Twelve compounds were identified in ethanolic extracts using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC analysis revealed that chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, and rutin were predominant compounds in ethanolicic extracts. Using HPLC-ABTS (2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) post-column assay, avicularin, chlorogenic, and rosmarinic acids were identified as the predominant radical scavengers in all ethanolic extracts. -

Floristic studies were carried out in years 2007-2013 using the cartogram method in the ATPOL system (2x2 km square grid). Here we present the numerical data (number of species in each historical-geographical group, families most frequently represented by anthropophytes), show the proportion of specific growth forms and describe habitat preferences. The Rzeszów Foothills region had already been shown as strongly impacted by anthropogenic pressures. The total number of vascular plant species detected was equal to 1115; among them, the synanthropes represent about 30%. Also the index of synanthropy was calculated to confirm strong anthropogenic transformation of the studied area. In the presented study, 47 invasive plant species were discovered in the region. Moreover, the role and distribution of the most interesting and invasive of the synanthropic species was analyzed based on their negative impact on the native flora. We also identified plant species with high invasive potential and indicated causes of their appearance and spread. Key words: synanthropic flora, vascular plant, anthropophytes, invasive plants 1. -
