This capstone project involves curriculum research, development, and implementation of a new type of high school art course in fashion design. Historically, fashion design has typically been taught in high schools as a home economics or sewing course. However, I see it as a rich subject for high school art students to study. Fashion is currently of high interest to adolescent students, due to television shows such as Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model. Contemporary art educators and their students can explore the topic of fashion artistically, aesthetically, multi-culturally, historically, globally, and through visual and popular culture. The fashion design curriculum I have created contains five CHANGE THE WORLD FASHION CURRICULUM 5 comprehensive units, which I have posted on my website www.MrsTsArtEducation.weebly.com, that explore themes such as identity, self-discovery, ethics, social justice, and socio-political culture that are at the heart of art-making. This approach to secondary art education can create an avenue for self-discovery and self-actualization in high school students. This curriculum includes traditional techniques of fashion sketching and illustration, as well as a variety of ways to use new technology to design fashions and artwork with a computer. In addition, feminist themes are examined in this new curriculum raising questions about fashion and power, the influence of advertising, sexualization of teens, and societal ideals of beauty. World Fashion Design Curriculum Map……………………………........30 CHANGE THE WORLD FASHION CURRICULUM 8 Introduction As a high school art teacher who has been learning about exciting new ideas in the field of art education in graduate school, I asked myself “What kind of course could I create that students would find meaningful and relevant to their lives?” From this key question, other questions arose. What about a course that would teach students the drawing and painting skills of human proportion, fabric rendering of light and shadow, and the realistic skills they crave to know? What about a course that could also help students look thoughtfully at personal and cultural values and ethics, at history, and at other cultures’ aesthetics as well? Could there be a way to include global citizenship and the local and world community in such a course? I have created such a course for my high school art students. This new fashion design class is designed to be an art course that does not require sewing. It focuses on designing, drawing, and painting fashion illustrations, as well as creating other projects such as videos, PowerPoint presentations, posters, persuasive essays on hot-button fashion topics, and recycled fashions and accessories. In addition, the course will include class discussions and evaluations of historical, social, cultural and religious meaning of fashions such as Muslim burkas, Japanese kimonos, or Amish attire.     D8 4-H CLOTHING & TEXTILES EVENTS General Rules & Guidelines OVERVIEW The 4-H Fashion Show is designed to recognize 4-H members who have completed a Clothing and Textiles project. The following objectives are taught in the Clothing and Textiles project: knowledge of fibers and fabrics, wardrobe selection, clothing construction, comparison shopping, fashion interpretation, understanding of style, good grooming, poise in front of others, and personal presentation skills. PURPOSE The Fashion Show provides an opportunity for 4-H members to exhibit the skills learned in their project work. It also provides members an opportunity to increase their personal presentation skills. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 1. Membership. Participants must be 4-H members currently enrolled in a Texas 4-H and Youth Development county program and actively participating in the Clothing & Textiles project. 2. Age Divisions. Age divisions are determined by a participant’s grade as of August 31, 2015 as follows: Division Grades Junior 3*, 4, or 5 *Must be at least 8 years old Intermediate 6, 7, or 8 Senior 9, 10, 11, or 12* *Must not be older than 18 years old 3. There are five (5) events conducted at the District Fashion Show: Fashion Show 3 age divisions (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) Natural Fiber Seniors only Fashion Storyboard 3 age divisions (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) Trashion Show 2 age groups (Junior, Intermediate/Senior) Duds to Dazzle 2 age divisions (Junior/Intermediate, Senior) 4. Revised December 1, 2017 BACK TO CONTENTS | 231 FASHION DESIGN Innovation in fashion design results from a rigorous process of developing and editing ideas that address specific design challenges. Students in our program work alongside expert, professional faculty and guest mentors, who are current and visible designers, to become educated and practiced in all aspects of the design process. Throughout their experience, students produce original designs and develop collections for their portfolio. In their Junior and Senior year, students have the opportunity to work in teams to create unique designs under the guidance of mentors, emulating professional designers and following the industry's seasonal schedule.     VERSACE’S NATIVE AMERICAN A COLONIZED FEMALE BODY IN THE NAME OF AESTHETIC AND DYNASTIC GLORY 1 In this contemporary moment fashion designers have the means to collaborate with Native American fashion designers. However, there is still a flourishing fashion market that refuses to recognize Native American tribes as owners of intellectual property.1 While some brands may initially start on the right track via collaboration with Native artists, it may not always end in success.2 Most recently, Versace has included Native American designs in their ready-to-wear fashion for the 2018 Spring-Summer season. This component of the collection belongs to a tribute honoring Gianni Versace and his original FW ’92 Native American print (Figures 1 and 2).3 I will be discussing the implications of the revived Native American print and how it affects Native North American men and women. In this essay, I will look at Versace’s legacy and his original print; the new Native American Tribute Collection by Donatella Versace; and Donna Karan’s collaboration with Pueblo artist, Virgil Ortiz. I argue that respectful recognition of Native North American property is thrown aside for aesthetic and dynastic glory, which in turn, allows non-Native designers to colonize the ‘exotic’ Native woman’s body by denying Native North American men and women the opportunity to represent themselves to the global fashion community. Virgil Ortiz’s collaboration with Donna Karan illustrates how respectful collaboration can shape the dominant society’s perception of Native North American women. It is complicated because it both exploits and empowers, sometimes through the very same practices; it is insidious because its most exploitative practices are often hidden, reproduced, and sustained through a consumer culture in which we are all in some ways complicit. Since fashion’s inception, people and institutions have employed a myriad of discursive strategies to ignore and even justify their complicity in exploitative labor, environmental degradation, and neo-colonial practices. This dissertation identifies and analyzes five predicaments of fashion while locating the multiple interventions that engage various discursive spaces in the fashion industry. Ultimately, the analysis of discursive strategies by creatives, workers, organizers, and bloggers reveals the existence of agile interventions that are as nuanced as the problem, and that can engage with disciplinary power in all these complicated places.

The artistic expression is unfolding into a new genre of a new era.. In the modern art, the boundary between the fine art and the applied art is becoming blurred, and further, distinction of fine art from popular art is also becoming meaningless. The advancement of science and technology, by offering new materials and visual forms, is contributing to the expansion of the morden art’s horizon. As fashion illustration is gaining recognition as a form of art which mirrors today’s realities, it has also become increasingly necessary to add variety and newness. Fashion illustration is thus becoming the visual language of the modern world, capable of conveying artistic emotion, and at the same time able to effectively communicate the image of fashion to the masses. The increasing awareness of artistic talent and ingenuity as essential components of fashion illustration is yielding greater fusion between fashion illustration and art &technology. This has resulted in the use of the advanced computer technology as a tool for crafting artistic expressions, such as fashion illustration, and this new tool has opened-up new possibilities for expressing images and colors. Further, the computer-aided fashion illustration is emerging as a new technique for expression.
