JAMAICA PETREL Pterodroma caribbaea E/Ex4 Predation by introduced mongooses and human exploitation for food caused the extinction or near- extinction of this very poorly known seabird of the forested mountains of eastern Jamaica, which recent evidence suggests is (or was) a good species. DISTRIBUTION The Jamaica Petrel (see Remarks 1) formerly nested in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, where specimens were taken at the summit in 1829 (Bancroft 1835) and in Cinchona Plantation on the south flank at about 1,600 m in November and December 1879 (Bond 1956b, Benson 1972, Imber 1991). Carte (1866) was aware of the species in the north-eastern end of Jamaica, and the John Crow Mountains, adjacent to the Blue Mountains, were known to harbour birds at the end of the nineteenth century (see Scott 1891-1893); Bourne (1965) reported that “birds are still said to call at night” in the John Crow Mountains. It is conceivable that the species also nested in the mountains of Guadeloupe and Dominica, since there is evidence of nesting black petrels in Guadeloupe (see Bent 1922, Murphy 1936, Imber 1991, Remarks 2 under Black-capped Petrel Pterodroma hasitata), and Verrill (1905) reported that the Jamaica Petrel nested in Dominica (see Remarks 2) in La Birne, Pointe Guignarde, Lance Bateaux, Morne Rouge and Scott's Head. Virtually nothing is known about the species's range at sea other than Bond's (1936) report of a possible sighting west of the Bimini Group, Bahama Islands. POPULATION When first reported in the literature in 1789 it was considered plentiful (see Godman 1907-1910). -

The Lecture this year is being organized in partnership with our member and long standing partners at the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT). JCDT has been a major player not only in Protected Areas and Management of the Blue and John Crow Mountain National Park, but also in the area of public awareness and education with features such as the National Green Expo held every other year. Like all our work over the last 18 years, we have balanced the Public Lectures between our two major areas of focus – Child Development and Environmental Management. This year, our environmental lecture will focus on issues of biodiversity and human impact on ecological habitats. Our lecturer, Dr. Byron Wilson is a Senior Lecturer in the University of the West Indies. He is an expert in conservation biology and has dedicated his research to the ecology and conservation of the critically endangered Jamaican Iguana and other rare endemic reptile species. In addition to Dr. Wilson’s work, the EFJ has partnered with Government, Researchers and Conservationists to study and record critical information and data on Endemic and Endangered Species across Jamaica, including the establishment of the UWI/EFJ Biodiversity Centre in Port Royal, the Virtual Herbarium and the publication of the “Endemic Trees of Jamaica” book. -

THE TROPHIC ECOLOGY OF THE ENDANGERED ENDEMIC BARAU’S PETREL (PTERODROMA BARAUI) FROM RÉUNION ISLAND, SOUTH-WESTERN INDIAN OCEAN. A thesis submitted in the fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of: Masters in Marine Biology at: Rhodes University By DANIEL KEITH DANCKWERTS BSc(Hons) African vertebrate ecology, Rhodes University DECEMBER 2014 “The richness I achieve in life comes from nature, the source of my inspiration” :- Claude Monet -: Abstract ABSTRACT: Réunion is the only tropical island that supports two endemic gadfly petrels. Population modelling has indicated that the current threats to the Barau’s Petrel (Pterodroma baraui) may drive it to extinction; this fate is almost definite for the Mascarene Petrel (Pseudobulweria aterrima). Management interventions have therefore been implemented, but conservation potential is handicapped since virtually nothing is known about the former species’ at-sea biology. Thus, following numerous recommendations, this study aimed to combine stomach content, stable isotope, and fatty acid analyses so to provide new information on the at-sea ecology of Barau’s Petrel. Breeding colonies were repeatedly visited over the same season and samples gathered from adults, fledglings, and downy chicks. Stomach contents consisted mostly of accumulated cephalopod beaks whereas structures from fishes, molluscs, arthropods, and crustaceans were less frequently encountered. Fatty acid profiles of blood varied greatly among individuals and the low incidences of monounsaturated and n-3 fatty acids discounted fish as an important dietary component. δ15N of blood indicated a niche between the fourth and fifth trophic levels, which proposes that these birds scavenge to a greater degree than other sympatric seabirds and suggests that adults are also reliant on their endogenous reserves during breeding. -

Harrop ABSTRACT This paper reviews the literature concerning the taxonomy, identification and distribution of the ‘soft-plumaged petrel’ Pterodroma feae/madeira/mollis complex in the Western Palearctic.There are no known consistent plumage differences between feae and madeira and, at present, only bill structure can be regarded as diagnostic.A number of consistent differences exist between mollis and feae/madeira which make field identification of mollis possible.To date, all well-documented records of ‘soft-plumaged petrels’ away from breeding grounds in the North Atlantic are compatible with feae; there are no safe records of mollis in the northern hemisphere, or of madeira away from its breeding grounds. wo species of petrel of the genus Ptero- History and taxonomy droma breed in the Western Palearctic: Archaeological remains found in two cave sites TFea’s Petrel P. feae, with the nominate in Gibraltar are clearly identifiable as those of form on Cape Verde and the subspecies P. f.
