Hayward3 and Akira Kurashima4 1 Meguro Parasitological Museum, Meguro, Tokyo, Japan; 2 Japan Fisheries Resources Conservation Association, Tokyo, Japan; 3 National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability, Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia; 4 Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo, Hongo, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan Abstract: Three species of Pseudodactylogyrus Gusev, 1965 (Monogenea: Pseudodactylogyridae) were collected from the gills of Anguilla reinhardtii Steindachner and A. australis Richardson from several localities in Australia and eels imported to Japan from Australia. Pseudodactylogyrus gusevi sp. n. from A. reinhardtii (type host) and A. australis in Queensland, Australia is most similar to P. bini (Kikuchi, 1929), but can be differentiated by the shorter male copulatory tube, heavy sclerotisation of the vaginal tube and the presence of a small projection of the supplementary piece of the hamulus. Pseudodactylogyrus rohdei sp. n. from A. australis (type host) in Queensland, Australia is most similar to P. anguillae (Yin et Sproston, 1948), but differs in the possession of a longer cement gland and the presence of a small projection on the supplementary piece of the hamulus. Pseudodactylogyrus bini sensu Gusev, 1965 and P. anguillae sensu Gusev, 1965 are synonymised with P. gusevi sp. n. and P. rohdei sp. n., respectively. Pseudodactylogyrus mun- dayi sp. n. from A. australis, originating in Tasmania, Australia and sent alive to Japan, is most similar to P.

Received 19 April 2019 / Accepted 19 July 2019 / Published 18 September 2019 Communicated by Yasuyuki Hashiguchi The geographical distributions of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) and Giant-mottled eel (A. marmorata) overlap in many regions in East Asia and therefore suffer from interspecific competition in the same rivers. After a long period of adaptation, the Japanese eel and Giant-mottled eel may exhibit habitat partitioning in the rivers to diminish the interspecific competition between them. In this study, we conducted a field investigation in the Fengshan River in Taiwan to survey the habitat distributions of the Japanese eel and Giant-mottled eel throughout a river. Moreover, we investigated whether their habitat distributions are related to their swimming and upstream migration. Thus, the mRNA expression levels of several candidate genes that may be associated with the swimming and upstream migration of eel were examined in the glass eels of the Japanese eel and Giant-mottled eel. Field investigation indicated that the Japanese eel mainly inhabited the lower and middle reaches of the Fengshan River, but the Giant- mottled eel was distributed over the middle to upper reaches.

Freshwater fish diversity in an oil palm concession area in Mimika, Papua. Biodiversitas 17: 665-672. New Guinea’s freshwater fish diversity may reach 400 species, twice the number of fish recorded in Australia. However, New Guinea’s freshwater fishes are facing rapid and poorly-planned social and economic developments, which have accelerated both habitat loss and degradation, impacting its unique biodiversity and threatening natural ecosystems. This study documents freshwater fish diversity and threats due to habitat conservation from oil palm development in the Timika Region, Papua. Fishes were sampled in canals, creeks, streams and rivers in the concession area of Pusaka Agro Lestari Company (PT. PAL) using seine and hand nets and a spear gun. Twenty two freshwater fish species in 15 families and 15 genera were recorded from the area. One of them is an endemic species of Timika (Glossamia timika), one rainbowfish species with a restricted Southern New Guinea distribution, and 12 other native fishes. Land clearing leads to increase water turbidity and sedimentation, water temperature, and pollution which are potential threats to native fishes and their habitats. The fact that PAL’s concession is part of distribution area of known distribution of G.

  • Population Genetic Structure of the Japanese Eel Anguilla Japonica: Panmixia at Spatial and Temporal Scales
Vol. 401: 221–232, 2010 MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Published February 22 doi: 10.3354/meps08422 Mar Ecol Prog Ser Population genetic structure of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica: panmixia at spatial and temporal scales Yu-San Han1, 2,*, Chia-Ling Hung2, Yi-Fen Liao2, Wann-Nian Tzeng1, 2 1Department of Life Science and 2Institute of Fisheries Science, College of Life Science, National Taiwan University, Taipei 106, Taiwan ABSTRACT: Since the 1970s, the population of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica has dramatically declined in East Asia. Consequently, conservation and resource management of this species are urgently required. However, the population genetic structure of this species, in temporal and spatial scales, is still poorly understood. We used 8 polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci to investigate its genetic composition. For cohort analysis, juvenile (glass) eels were collected yearly between 1986 and 2007 from the Danshui River, Taiwan; for arrival wave analysis, glass eels were collected monthly from Fulong Estuary, Taiwan; and for spatial analysis, glass eels were collected from Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan. Genetic differentiation among annual cohorts, arrival waves and spatial samples was very low; a significant difference was observed among annual cohorts and spatial samples, but not among arrival waves. However, specific temporal or spatial scale patterns were not seen in either pairwise genetic comparisons or the phylogenetic tree of all samples. Occasional genetic variations among samples occurred randomly, but a stable lasting genetic structure could not be formed. The isolation by distance (IBD) test showed no evidence of genetic structuring at the spatial scale, and the results of the isolation by time (IBT) test were insignificant among arrival waves.
