Police brutality, racism, graffiti and Jean-Michel Basquiat painted Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart) on the wall of Keith the art world of the early-1980s Haring’s studio in 1983 to commemorate the death of a young black artist, who died from injuries sustained while in police custody after being arrested for allegedly tagging a New York City subway Lower East Side converge in one station. Defacement is the starting point for the present volume, which focuses on Basquiat’s response to anti-black racism and police brutality. Basquiat’s “Defacement” explores this chapter painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat in the artist’s career through both the lens of his identity and the Lower East Side as a nexus of activism in the early 1980s, an era marked by the rise of the art market, the AIDS crisis and ongoing racial tensions in the city. -

Marissa Abrahams | South Beach Psychiatric Center | Brooklyn, New York As a nurse, it has been disturbing to see first-hand how few NYPD officers (present en masse at ALL peaceful protests) are wearing the face masks that we know are preventing the spread of COVID-19. Demonstrators are taking this extremely seriously and I saw NYPD literally laugh in the face of a protester who asked why they do not. It is negligent and a blatant provocation -especially in the context of the over-policing of Black and Latinx communities for social distancing violations. The complete disregard of the NYPD for the safety of the people they purportedly protect and serve, the active attacks with tear gas and pepper spray in the midst of a respiratory pandemic, is appalling and unacceptable. Queen Mother Moore: First Lady of African Reparations Ever since 1950, I’ve been on the trail for reparations. They owe us more than they could ever pay. They stole our language, they stole our culture. They stole us from our mothers and fathers and took our names away from us. They worked us free of charge eighteen hours a day, seven days a week, under the lash, for centuries. LET’S TALK ABOUT REPARATIONS Nkechi Taifa* In the spring of the 2019, the Columbia Journal of Race and Law invited activist, attorney and scholar, Nkechi Taifa, to Columbia Law School for a public lecture on the topic of Reparations for descendent of enslaved Africans in the United States. Reparations has been a subject to much public discourse over the years and, in the last decade in particular, there has been a renewed interest on the political viability of establishing a federal commission to study the harm caused by slavery and develop recommendations to repairing those lingering harms on living African Americans today. On June 19, 2019, the House of Representatives held a historic public hearing, where prominent African American scholars, activists, writers, lawyers, amongst others, shared their thoughts on the topic of reparations. This renewed interest is a culmination of over a century long struggle by the reparations’ movement in the United States. Ms. Taifa offers that historical view of the reparation’s movement in the United States. In her captivating address to the Columbia Law School community, Ms. Taifa articulates the passions, courage, vision, successes, frustrations and resilience of the Reparations movement in the United States from the late 1800s to the present. At the conclusion of Ms. Taifa’s remark, it was obvious to us at CJRL that Ms. Taifa’s timely messages was much a much-needed intervention in the Reparations discourse. * Nkechi Taifa is the president of The Taifa Group, LLC; founding member - National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America; Commissioner - National African American Reparations Commission. -

Judge Damon Keith: The Judicial Antidote to Judge Julius Hoffman Challenging Claims of Unilateral Executive Authority Ellen Yaroshefsky* From some of the highly-publicized trials of the 1960s—namely the trials of the Chicago Eight, Panther Twenty-One, and Weathermen—we can draw indispensable lessons about the role of the judges in upholding and promoting a fair justice system. The contrast to Judge Julius Hoffman’s notorious injudicious conduct in the Chicago Eight case is the courageous, thoughtful Judge Damon Keith, in the less publicized White Panther case in Detroit in the early 1970s. Judge Keith’s overriding sense of fairness exemplified the best of judicial independence in considering President Nixon’s claims of unilateral executive authority in United States v. Ayers and United States v. U.S. District Court. Judge Keith’s exemplary judicial conduct is an embrace of judicial independence that provides inspiration in current times. -

Panwala* INTRODUCTION Excessive use of force by police officers undermines faith in the criminal justice system. Citizens expect those with badges and guns to follow the law as well as enforce it, but these two roles often come into conflict. Reporter Craig Horowitz recounted that one police officer justified his hitting a suspect in the stomach when the suspect tried to run away as being necessary to reestablish author- ity.1 Another police officer is quoted as saying, "[i]f someone disses you, you take him in an alley and slap him. -
You've Gone Past Us Now
the blue afterwards Felix Shafer November 25, 2010 2 You've gone past us now. beloved comrade: north american revolutionary and political prisoner My sister and friend of these 40 years, it's over Marilyn Buck gone through the wire out into the last whirlwind. With time's increasing distance from her moment of death on the afternoon of August 3, 2010, at home in Brooklyn New York, the more that I have felt impelled to write a cohesive essay about Marilyn, the less possible such a project has become. She died at 62 years of age, surrounded by people who loved and still love her truly. She died just twenty days after being released from Carswell federal prison in Texas. Marilyn lived nearly 30 years behind bars. It was the determined effort of Soffiyah Elijah, her attorney and close friend of more than a quarter century that got her out of that prison system at all. Her loss leaves a wound that insists she must be more than a memory and still so much more than a name circulating in the bluest afterwards. If writing is one way of holding on to Marilyn, it also ramifies a crazed loneliness. Shadows lie down in unsayable places. I'm a minor player in the story who wants to be scribbling side by side with her in a cafe or perched together overlooking the Hudson from a side road along the Palisades. This work of mourning is fragmentary, impossible, subjective, politically unofficial, lovingly biased, flush with anxieties over (mis)representation, hopefully evocative of some of the 'multitude' of Marilyns contained within her soul, strange and curiously punctuated by shifts into reverie and poetic time.
