Der Blaue Engel, Josef Von Sternberg, 1930) Domingo 1 17:30 · Sala 1 · Sternberg / Dietrich. Los verdes años As Sereias (Paulo Rocha, 2001). Portugal. 35 mm. VOSE*. 31’. (Dick Tomasovic) 22:00 · Sala 1 · Sternberg / Dietrich. El pintor y la musa Capricho imperial (The Scarlet Empress, Josef von Sternberg, 1934) Int.: Marlene Dietrich, John Lodge, Sam Jaffe. EEUU. 35 mm. The Greatest Year With 476 films released, and many of them classics, 1939 is often considered the pinnacle of Hollywood filmmaking. • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

  • Audience Guide Written and Compiled by Jack Marshall March 30–April 28
Audience Guide Written and compiled by Jack Marshall March 30–April 28 Theater you can afford to see— plays you can’t afford to miss! About The American Century Theater The American Century Theater was founded in 1994. We are a professional company dedicated to presenting great, important, but overlooked American plays of the twentieth century . what Henry Luce called “the American Century.” The company’s mission is one of rediscovery, enlightenment, and perspective, not nostalgia or preservation. Americans must not lose the extraordinary vision and wisdom of past playwrights, nor can we afford to surrender our moorings to our shared cultural heritage. Our mission is also driven by a conviction that communities need theater, and theater needs audiences. To those ends, this company is committed to producing plays that challenge and move all Americans, of all ages, origins and points of view. In particular, we strive to create theatrical experiences that entire families can watch, enjoy, and discuss long afterward. These audience guides are part of our effort to enhance the appreciation of these works, so rich in history, content, and grist for debate. The American Century Theater is a 501(c)(3) professional nonprofit theater company dedicated to producing significant 20th Century American plays and musicals at risk of being forgotten. This program is supported in part by the Arlington County Cultural Affairs Division of Arlington Economic Development and the Arlington Commission for the Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and many generous donors. Contents The Playwright: Budd Schulberg . 1 Corruption on the Waterfront: The Pistol Local, the Real Johnny Friendly, and the Real Father Barry .

  • Films from the THIRTIES: PART II 1935-39
t% The Museum of Modern Art 1] West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 245-3200 Cable: Modernart No. 83 FOR RELEASE: Friday, August 25, I968 Films from THE THIRTIES: PART II 1935-39 The Museum of Modern Art, will present a retrospective of films from the thirties beginning August 23, and running through October 6. The Thirties, according to Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Department of Film, will consist of 39 pictures, representing some of the richest creative talent in American cinema at a time that has been called "the dear, dead days not beyond recall." Two years ago the Museum presented The Thirties, U.S.A., Part I, covering the first half of the decade. The films being shown now as Part II were made from 1935 ^^ 193 '• Among the pictures to be shown are: Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon"; Paul Muni in "The Life of Emile Zola," the Story of a Northern Jew's lynching in the South; the great thriller "Night Must Fall," an adaptation of the Emlyn Williams play starring Robert Montgomery; and "The Good Earth," a spectacle film in black and white, from Pearl Buck's popular novel, for which Luise Rainer won her second Academy Award, with Paul Muni in the starring role. The latter part of the thirties was characterized by further achievements in the musical film, largely due to the talents of Fred Astaire, who with Ginger Rogers starred in "Top Hat," and "Shall We Dance," both of which are in the retrospective. The most important contributions to the annals of films made in the thirties was the series of "snowball" comedies Hollywood turned out at a time of grim, economic hardships.

  • THE FILMS of JOSEF VON STERNBERG by Andrew Sarris
te Museum oi rnArt Uif t 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Circle 5-890U ^aole: Modernart No. 112 cs Wednesday, October 27, 1965 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE FILMS OF JOSSF VON STERNBERG From November 1 through January 1, The Museum of Modern Art will present 16 films? directed by Josef von Sternberg between 1925 and 1953* The series, the most compre hensive ever held of the artistfs films, was selected by Andrew Sarris, movie critic and lecturer, columnist for The Village VoiceM and commentator of a weekly program on the movies for WBAI. "Sternberg," says Mr* Sarris in his forthcoming monograph*, "has always been interested less in men and their societies than in men and women, or more precisely, in man's, confrontation of the myths of womanhood, the underlying theme of Sternberg!an cinema from THE SALVATION HUNTERS to ANATAHAN. What has always seemed oblique and obscure in Sternberg's art as compared with that of his contemporaries is the director's reluctance to reveal everything about his characters •••<, There is usually more to Sternberg's characters than meets the eye, and after the advent of the talkies, the ear." Included in the series are von Sternberg's four silent films: his first and rarely seen film, THE SALVATION HUNTERS (1925); THE LAST COMMAND (1927-28); and, two of his gangster films: UNDERWORLD (1927) and THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK (1928), THE BLUE ANGEL (1930), the great success in which von Sternberg introduced Marlene Dietrich as. the "femme fat ale" to the screen, will be shown, as will six other films in which the actress starred: MOROCCO (1930), DISHONORED (1931), SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932), BLONDE VENUS (1932), THE SCARLET EMPRESS (193k) and THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN (1935).
