TIBET: KAMA CHU AND KHARTA VALLEY TREK AND FRIENDSHIP HIGHWAY TIBET May, 2019 PART 3 BY WILLIAM D BOEHM Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River that flows 3000km (1800 mi) from near Mt Kailish through the deepest canyon in the world, 5300m (17000 ft) below Namcha Barwha 7,782-meter/25,446 ft into the Indian Ganges DAY 4 May 16 We loaded our gear and food for the week khama valley trek on a government bus, interestingly in that it had four fisheye cameras in the front to monitor our conversations and actions. We left Lhasa driving highway G 318, the 830 km (500 mi) long Friendship Highway. We would drive today only partway 270 km (162 mi) to Gyantse to the south. Passed through incredible mountain scenery first driving along the Kyichu Valley and the Lhasa River for an hour before the town of Quxu. Here the Lhasa joins the huge Yarlong Tsampo (Brahmaputra) River. Here we crossed at a narrowing on a bridge and followed along its huge floodplain for an hour before turning off the friendship highway south. The Yarlung Tsangpo begins to the east along its 3,000 kilometer (1,800 mile) course through open valleys on the Tibetan Plateau. With headwaters in western Tibet near Mount Kailash, the river has the highest average elevation 4000 meters (13,000 feet) of any major river in the world. At the eastern end of the Himalayas in southeastern Tibet, the river bends sharply south, cascading through one of most dramatic gorges in the world before Left Yarlong Tsangpo River before canyon, Namcha Barwa Peak 7782 m descending into the lowlands of the Ganges Delta. -

Lhotse, 1955 NORMAN G. DYHRENFURTH When leaving Mount Everest in December of 1952 I hardly dared hope that some day I would be able to return to Solo Khumbu. My original plan was to visit that area in the Fall of 1954 for some "m inor” ascents, but primarily to produce documentary films. When at last I did hear from Kathmandu toward the end of January 1955, I was given permission to attempt Lhotse. It soon became quite clear that the time was too short to finance, organize, and completely outfit a major expedition for a pre-monsoon attempt. I very reluctantly decided to post pone the main climbing effort until the Fall, knowing well from previous experience that the chances of success on one of the "big” Eight-Thousand- ers are considerably less at that time. Within less than a month the financial backing was found, the team members selected, and the equipment and foodstuffs assembled, the latter entirely in Switzerland and Austria. In view of the time element involved in producing several documentary films, and in making the first truly pro fessional map by photogrammetric means of the entire Everest region, it was decided to leave for Nepal in two groups: Dipl. Ing. Erwin Schneider, outstanding cartographer and well-known Austrian mountaineer, Ernst Senn, one of Austria’s leading "extreme” climbers, who had been to Broad Peak with Dr. Herrligkoffer in the Fall of 1954, and myself left Europe on March 30 by ship, taking with us the bulk of the expedition’s baggage, nearly seven tons. AAC Publications Threading the Needle Skiing Lhotse's Dream Line ON SEPTEMBER 30, at about 2 p.m., Jim Morrison and I pulled off our overboots, clicked into our ski bindings, and laboriously buckled our boots. Our oxygen masks were off, making every action at 27,940 feet, on the summit of Lhotse, extremely slow and difficult. I reached for my backpack, so much lighter now that my skis were on my feet, and swung it over my right shoulder, then slowly buckled the waist and chest straps. I slid my oxygen mask back over my face, stuck my right hand on the summit cornice, and soaked up the view one last time. Exactly four weeks earlier, on August 31, our team of four—Jim and I, along with photographers Dutch Simpson and Nick Kalisz—left the U.S. from various points and convened at the Kathmandu airport. Jim and I went straight from the hotel to the Nepal Ministry of Tourism to register for our expedition, pay garbage fees, meet our liaison officer, and finalize the two necessary permits for Lhotse: one for climbing and one for skiing back down. We took another full day to organize in Kathmandu before heading to the airport to fly into the Khumbu and begin our trek to base camp. Our goal for this expedition was simple: Jim and I wanted to ski the Lhotse Couloir from the summit in as pure a fashion as we could muster. Forming a super-direct narrow line from the upper Lhotse Face to the summit, the couloir was a dream line for skiing and the complete descent had been attempted several times. -

AV SAUNDERS (Plates 25-27) These notes have been arranged in (more or less) height order. The intention has been to report developments and first ascents completed during the year, rather than to list repeat ascents of existing routes. 1989 was not a good year. There were few new routes, and several fatalities. On Everest (8 848m), reports ofovercrowding have become common place; this year they have been linked to outbreaks ofviral flu. As if this were not enough, there are now perennial arguments about the fixing of the route through the Khumbu icefall. Apparently the earlier expeditions who set up a route often demand payment from the-following expeditions who use the route. During the spring season, the Polish expedition organized by Eugeniusz Chrobak followed a variation on the W ridge route, avoiding the normal Lho La approach. Following a line with minimum avalanche danger, the team climbed Khumbutse (6640m) before descending to the Rongbuk glacier, where they established Camp I at 5850m. The line continued left of previous ascents to gain the W shoulder. Five more camps were established on the ridge and in the Hornbein Couloir. On 24 May Chrobak and Andrzej Marciniak reached the summit. Over the next two days they descended, stripping the camps with the help of two other team members. They reached Camp I in deteriorating weather to join another team arriving from base. The next day all the climbers set out for base, up the 600m fixed ropes over Khumbutse. At 1pm the six climbers were struck by an avalanche which broke the ropes. -

BEIJING — When George Mallory made a reconnaissance trip to the gargantuan glaciers at the foot of Mount Everest in Tibet before his ill-fated attempt to climb the mountain, he took photographs and noted the splendor: “Here is a pure beauty of form, a kind of ultimate harmony,” he wrote. " Nearly 90 years later another mountaineer and photographer, David Breashears, traveled to the same remote Himalayan landscape and found something that might have made Mallory think again: more than 330 vertical feet of the Rongbuk Glacier had melted in the intervening decades, leaving stubs of ice where grand pinnacles had once been. The photographs that Mr. Breashears brought back as evidence of climate change are at the heart of a multimedia exhibition that opened here last weekend at a prestigious photography gallery in China, Three Shadows. In the same room as Mr. Breashears’s glacier photos from eight recent expeditions, which are projected on a wall in a sweeping 10-foot-by-45-foot panoramic video, are smaller projections of images by Chinese photographers that document what many scientists say is a leading cause of climate change. These were taken in coal mines thousands of miles east of the glaciers and they show miners covered in soot and toiling away in the bowels of the earth. The show, titled “Coal + Ice” and produced by the Asia Society in New York, is an ambitious attempt to call attention to the long-range impact of humanity’s unrelenting thirst for energy. The melting of glaciers on the Tibetan plateau, at the headwaters of Asia’s great rivers, threatens the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people downstream. -

Six major sets of moraines are present representing significant glacier advances or still-stands. These date to >330 ka (Tingri moraine), >41 ka (Dzakar moraine), 24-27 ka (Jilong Moraine), 14-17 ka (Rongbuk moraine), 8-2 ka (Samdupo moraines) and ~1.6 ka (Xarlungnama moraine). The Samdupo glacial stage is subdivided into Samdupo I (6.8-7.7 ka) and Samdupo II (~2.4 ka).
