  • Uncle Scrooge and Liquidity Preference
Uncle Scrooge and Liquidity Preference In my childhood neighborhood on the Old Rock Island Road in East Wenatchee, most kids liked comic books. Batman, Spiderman, Flash Gordon, and of course Superman were always popular. I didn’t care much for the action heroes. I can only remember two comic book characters I liked. One was a fat little kid named Tubby in the comic Lu Lu. Tubby, Lu Lu and their friends had a very neat clubhouse. As a chunky little kid myself, I liked Tubby a lot. I guess I had a preference for housing at an early age as well. But my all-time favorite comic book character was Donald Duck’s uncle, Uncle Scrooge McDuck. I never liked Donald himself, a holdover from the cartoons at the Saturday matinee. I found his voice so irritating. Uncle Scrooge, however, to a budding six-year-old economist was sublime. Maybe you remember Uncle Scrooge and his castle with the money bin where he kept his billions of dollars of cash, mostly coin, that he pushed around with what we called in those days a bulldozer. I imitated my comic book hero by converting my weekly allowance and cash gifts to coin. I often dumped my total financial wealth onto my bed, and with cupped dozer-hands pushed it around a la Uncle Scrooge. Like Scrooge McDuck, I too was a harmless miser, not a malicious one like Dickens’ Scrooge. From an early age, I didn’t like to spend money. I think it had something to do with my first purchase.

Goofy is a tall, anthropomorphic dog, and typically wears a turtle neck and vest, with pants, shoes, white gloves, and a tall hat originally designed as a rumpled fedora. Goofy is a close friend of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and is one of Disney's most popular characters. He is normally characterized as extremely clumsy and dimwitted, yet this interpretation isn't always definitive; occasionally Goofy is shown as intuitive and clever, albeit in his own unique, eccentric way. Goofy debuted in animated cartoons, starting in 1932 with Mickey's Revue. Goofy also starred at his first solo cartoon called Goofy and Wilbur which was directed by Dick Huemer and first released on March 17, 1939. The short featured Goofy fishing with the help of Wilbur, his pet grasshopper. Originally known as Dippy Dawg, the character is more commonly known simply as "Goofy," a name used in his short film series. In his 1950s persona, Goofy was called George Geef, or G. G. Geef, implying that "Goofy" was merely a nickname. In Goofy Gymnastics (1949) he fills out a coupon with the name James Boyd.Sources from the Goof Troop continuity give the character's full name as Goofy Goof, or G.

FILM 1/30e No.1 The Exhibition of Mr. Mukuo Takamura Mukuo at his Studio (Photo:T.Namiki) The retrospective exhibition of Mr. Takamura Mukuo, who had passed away 3 year ago, was held at the Museum in Machida. This April under the auspices of his family. He the leading person in background painters of Japanese animation field produced numerous wonderful works. Though they offered free- entrance, it was rich in content. There were more than 100 background paintings drawn by him, from his early works such as "Marco", "Gosch, the Cellist", "The Dagger of Kamui", to his posthumous works like "Sailor Moon". They gave us the full picture of his career as a background designer for 30 years. They were enough to remind almost 600 fans, who visited exhibition at his talent. Mr. Mukuo first helped ANIDO directlywith the article on "Marco" in FILM 1/24, No. 23. The background of "Gosch, the Cellist" most of which were was so great that I can never forget that drawn by him. During its production, I worked as an animator. Even after that, I took a part in advertisement. He helped us a lot, like making a guest appearance when we held screenings, joining the discussion for the animation magazine, drawing background of the pictures for badges and other goods, and so on. It's very sad to say Mr. Mukuo had already passed away. But I believe that we, people in Japanese animation field, will never forget his earnest attitude toward creation. ANIDO is now planning to publish the book of his wonderful works.

  • Frame by Frame
3 Pars Pro Toto Character Animation and the Work of the Anonymous Artist Everyone does his or her task on the conveyor belt, performing a partial function without grasping the totality. —Siegfried Kracauer1 The single frame is the basic unit of film just as bricks are the basic unit of brick houses. —Robert Breer2 DELIBERATE MISTAKES In late March 1937, in order to meet the booming demand for Popeye cartoons, the management at Fleischer Studios called for the production process to be sped up. In-betweeners, the animators tasked with drawing the stages of movement that come in between key poses, were expected to double their daily output, from twenty sketches per day to forty.3 But tensions between management and labor at the studio were running high, and the in-betweeners did not comply. Instead, they countered with a “slowdown” strike, which meant, effectively, continuing to produce drawings at the regular rate.4 In the month that followed, fifteen anima- tors were fired for participating in the slowdown, and on May 6 the Commercial Artists and Designers Union authorized a full walkout of the studio. The story of what happened next has already been told, as have the stories of other labor conflicts in the US animation industry—most notably, the 1941 strike at Walt Disney Studios.5 But I want to focus on what didn’t happen. By this I do not mean a counterfactual history, at least not in the traditional sense of the term. Rather, I wish to imagine what is left unsaid in these narratives, which tell us only what went on behind the scenes.

  • 'Steamboat' Not Actually the First Mickey Film 'Hot Dog!'
Mickey isn’t just the most famous mouse on the planet, he’s history’s most iconic cartoon character who also happens to moonlight as the most recognized corporate identity of any com- pany in the world. He’s literally the face of one of the biggest media companies ever. Those are a whole lot of roles for a rodent to fill. Even if you’re anthropomorphic. He’s also a birthday boy as Walt Disney’s most beloved creation turns 90 today. Here’s a look at a few of the things you might not know about Mickey ... HAPPY 90TH DISNEY A mouse by any other name ... Walt Disney initially named Mickey Mouse “Mortimer,” until Walt’s wife, MICKEY MOUSE Lillian, suggested “Mickey” was a better choice. ‘Steamboat’ not actually the first Mickey film “Steamboat Willie” was “Plane Crazy” released on this day in 1928 as the first short film starring Mickey Mouse, but it was actually the third created. The first two, “Plane Crazy” and “The Gallopin’ Gaucho,” initially failed to find distributors, but were picked up and released later. “The Gallopin’ Gaucho” Mouse merch The first piece of Mickey Mouse merchandise was a tablet of ‘Hot dog!’ paper that featured the mouse, designed for children. The The first Mickey short in which first Mickey Mickey spoke was “The Karnival Mouse doll was Kid,” the ninth Mickey short. His designed in first words: “Hot dog!” 1930. Walt Disney wasn’t satisfied with the first few actors chosen to provide a voice for Mickey Mouse, so he did it, and continued to do so through about 1947.

  • Bursting Money Bins the Ice and Water Structure
Bursting Money Bins The ice and water structure Franco Bagnoli, Dept. of Physics and Astronomy and Center for the Study of Complex Dynamics, University of Florence, Italy Via G. Sansone, 1 50019 Sesto Fiorentino (FI) Italy [email protected] In the classic comics by Carl BarKs, “The Big Bin on Killmotor Hill” [1], Uncle Scrooge, trying to defend his money bin from the Beagle Boys, follows a suggestion by Donald DucK, and fills the bin with water. Unfortunately, that night is going be the coldest one in the history of Ducksburg. The water freezes, bursting the ``ten-foot walls'' of the money bin, and finally the gigantic cube of ice and dollars slips down the hill up to the Beagle Boys lot. That water expands when freezing is a well-Known fact, and it is at the basis of an experiment that is often involuntary performed with beer bottles in freezers. But why does the water behave this way? And, more difficult, how can one illustrate this phenomenon in simple terms? First of all, we have to remember that the temperature is related to the Kinetic energy of molecules, which tend to stay in the configuration of minimal energy. In general, if one adopts a simple ball model for atoms, the configuration of minimal energy is more compact than a more energetic (and thus disordered) configuration. But this is not the case for water. FIG. 1: A Schematic representation of the water molecule Indeed, water molecules resemble the head of MicKey Mouse (see Fig. 1), the two hydrogen atoms being the ears.
