Anido FILM1 30E
FILM 1/30e No.1 The Exhibition of Mr. Mukuo Takamura Mukuo at his Studio (Photo:T.Namiki) The retrospective exhibition of Mr. Takamura Mukuo, who had passed away 3 year ago, was held at the Museum in Machida. This April under the auspices of his family. He the leading person in background painters of Japanese animation field produced numerous wonderful works. Though they offered free- entrance, it was rich in content. There were more than 100 background paintings drawn by him, from his early works such as "Marco", "Gosch, the Cellist", "The Dagger of Kamui", to his posthumous works like "Sailor Moon". They gave us the full picture of his career as a background designer for 30 years. They were enough to remind almost 600 fans, who visited exhibition at his talent. Mr. Mukuo first helped ANIDO directlywith the article on "Marco" in FILM 1/24, No. 23. The background of "Gosch, the Cellist" most of which were was so great that I can never forget that drawn by him. During its production, I worked as an animator. Even after that, I took a part in advertisement. He helped us a lot, like making a guest appearance when we held screenings, joining the discussion for the animation magazine, drawing background of the pictures for badges and other goods, and so on. It's very sad to say Mr. Mukuo had already passed away. But I believe that we, people in Japanese animation field, will never forget his earnest attitude toward creation. ANIDO is now planning to publish the book of his wonderful works. -
Frame by Frame
3 Pars Pro Toto Character Animation and the Work of the Anonymous Artist Everyone does his or her task on the conveyor belt, performing a partial function without grasping the totality. —Siegfried Kracauer1 The single frame is the basic unit of film just as bricks are the basic unit of brick houses. —Robert Breer2 DELIBERATE MISTAKES In late March 1937, in order to meet the booming demand for Popeye cartoons, the management at Fleischer Studios called for the production process to be sped up. In-betweeners, the animators tasked with drawing the stages of movement that come in between key poses, were expected to double their daily output, from twenty sketches per day to forty.3 But tensions between management and labor at the studio were running high, and the in-betweeners did not comply. Instead, they countered with a “slowdown” strike, which meant, effectively, continuing to produce drawings at the regular rate.4 In the month that followed, fifteen anima- tors were fired for participating in the slowdown, and on May 6 the Commercial Artists and Designers Union authorized a full walkout of the studio. The story of what happened next has already been told, as have the stories of other labor conflicts in the US animation industry—most notably, the 1941 strike at Walt Disney Studios.5 But I want to focus on what didn’t happen. By this I do not mean a counterfactual history, at least not in the traditional sense of the term. Rather, I wish to imagine what is left unsaid in these narratives, which tell us only what went on behind the scenes. -
How I Became Mickey Mouse
Christchurch Baptist Fellowship November 16, 2014 HOW I BECAME MICKEY MOUSE I am sitting here drinking coffee (a rather grown-up drink) from a Mickey Mouse mug. Next to the mug is my iPhone with a smiling Mickey Mouse cover on the exterior. In my office drawer is a collection of Mickey Mouse pens, given as a present. In my closet is a special section dedicated exclusively to Mickey Mouse ties, most of which are out of present day circulation, except for the days I wear them. I most often wear them when I make hospital visits, especially to children. I love the way kids’ faces light up when they see the unmistakable mouse on my tie and even in the greatest discomfort will mange to yell, “Mickey Mouse!” In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, our church helped over 2,600 refugees in our building. We had upwards to 320 people spending the night at our church every evening for twenty-one days. Through the night, cries were heard when loved ones found relatives they presumed had perished in the storm. One day a blind man staying with us found his seeing-eye dog. Major magazines and national television stations sent their reporters. Even the Today Show flew our blind resident with his dog to New York for an interview. It hit local and national news. During this time Christchurch was recognized as the outstanding shelter in Houston for Katrina victims. I was so proud of the way our people worked day and night providing three meals a day for the better part of a month for these people without a home. -
It Was All Started by a Mouse: Walt, Trains, and Mickey & Minnie Through the Years
It Was All Started by a Mouse: Walt, Trains, and Mickey & Minnie Through the Years From their first appearance aboard a black-and-white steamboat … to their latest adventure searching for the perfect picnic spot, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are cultural icons spanning generations and nations. In celebration of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, here is a look back at some of the finest moments for these true originals, and the man who created them. It’s a good reminder that, as Walt Disney said, “It was all started by a mouse.” Iconic On-Screen Moments Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood in August 1923 and founded Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in October of that year. Just five years later, Mickey Mouse debuted on the silver screen and went on to appear in a series of 130 animated short films from 1928 to 1953, with four additional shorts released between 1983 and 2013. Since 1955, he has been a frequent presence on television, too. Following are some notable highlights of Mickey’s onscreen career: “Steamboat Willie” (1928) – The first Mickey Mouse cartoon released (although it was the third Mickey cartoon made) was also the first animated short with synchronized sound. Mickey is a mischievous deckhand on a riverboat under the command of the tyrannical Captain Pete; Minnie is a tardy passenger who joins Mickey in music-making. “The Karnival Kid” (1929) – The first cartoon where Mickey speaks (“Hot dogs! Hot dogs!”). He also famously tips his ears to Minnie, foreshadowing the Mickey and Minnie ear headwear popular today. -

Mickey's Trailer and Environmental Thought: Disney Cartoons And
American Studies in Scandinavia, 48:1 (2016), pp. 43-60. Published by the Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS). Mickey’s Trailer and Environmental Thought: Disney Cartoons and Countryside Joe Goddard University of Copenhagen Abstract: The influence of popular cartoons on environmental cognition is explored in this essay through readings of Mickey’s Trailer, a 1938 cartoon directed by Ben Sharpsteen for Walt Disney. Other materials considered include Ford Motor Compa- ny’s 1937-38 film coproduced by Wilder Pictures, Glacier International Park, which promotes motor-tourism and automobile ownership, and Ben Sharpsteen’s other work for Walt Disney. The article also examines the ideas of physical and “illusional” zoning in the city, especially the way that they were applied in the mid-twentieth century. Physical zon- ing involved separating incompatible land uses, whereas illusional zoning entailed seeing what you wanted to see. What does Mickey’s Trailer say about how people can live, and can it inform where people choose to live? The essay muses that apprecia- tions of nature and the environment are influenced by popular culture. Keywords: Walt Disney, Mickey’s Trailer, Cartoons, Popular Culture, Environmental Ideas “Oh boy, Whatta day,” exclaims Mickey Mouse from the front step of his small house as Disney’s 1938 short cartoon Mickey’s Trailer opens.1 Mickey is wearing a nightshirt and a nightcap, and rubs his hands in ex- pectation. A white picket fence rings a perfectly domesticated, well-kept 1 Mickey’s Trailer is available on You Tube at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R86XY9lmtMs. Thanks to the two blind reviewers, Markku Salmela and Mimi White, and to Brian Graham and Paul Richmond for their incisive comments and suggestions. -
