Then, students will answer questions about what they learned using the text to give evidence for their answer. Objectives The objective of this lesson is to teach students about the history of the Disney character Mickey Mouse and to illustrate how Mickey has changed over time from his origins in the 1920s to present day. Lesson Directions Step 1: Read the passage below about the origins of Mickey Mouse. On November 18, 1928, Mickey Mouse made his movie debut in Steamboat Willie, one of the earliest animated cartoons. This seven-minute film, directed by Walt Disney, was the first to combine animation technology with synchronized sound. Steamboat Willie was one of the earliest animated cartoons, a medium that grew from comic strips and Sunday funnies into a multimillion-dollar business. The short film was based on a cartoon drawing of Mickey by Walt Disney. After Steamboat Willie, Walt Disney would go on to create one of the largest media empires in the world. NC State Standards – CCR Anchor Standards R.1, R.2, R.3, R.4, RL.1, RL.2, RL.3, RL.4 Step 2: In groups or individually, answer the following questions about Mickey Mouse. • What was the date that Mickey Mouse first appeared in an animated movie? • Who created Mickey Mouse? • What was the name of the first animated movie that featured Mickey Mouse? • How long was the first movie that Mickey Mouse appeared in? • Who directed the first movie to feature Mickey Mouse? Step 3: Look at the two pictures below of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. The first picture is a drawing of Mickey and Minnie in the 1930s, the second picture is a drawing of Mickey and Minnie today. Mickey and Minnie in the 1930s Mickey and Minnie today Step 4: Compare and contrast the differences and similarities between the pictures. How have the characters changed over time? How have they stayed the same? Discuss your answers with a friend. NC State Standards – CCR Anchor Standards R.1, R.2, R.3, R.4, RL.1, RL.2, RL.3, RL.4 Step 5: Read the text below about Mickey Mouse’s biography. Mickey Mouse debuted in the 1928 animated short cartoon Steamboat Willie and went on to become the familiar symbol of Walt Disney studios. Mickey starred in dozens of Disney animated shorts and the 1940 animated feature Fantasia, becoming one of the world’s best-known cartoon characters. After 1950, Mickey rarely appeared in films and instead settled into the role of Disney’s ambassador. He appeared in its advertisements and theme parks, with Mickey’s mouse ears becoming the company symbol. Disney’s daily TV show The Mickey Mouse Club was first broadcast in 1955, the same year that Disneyland opened its doors, and the show became a long-running hit. The show’s theme song spelled out Mickey’s name: M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E! The Mickey Mouse Club was revived in 1977 and then again in the 1990s. The cast members on the show were called “Mouseketeers”. According to legend, Walt Disney planned to name the mouse “Mortimer” until his wife suggested the name “Mickey”. Mickey’s longtime girlfriend is Minnie Mouse and his dog is named Pluto. Mickey in Steamboat Willie NC State Standards – CCR Anchor Standards R.1, R.2, R.3, R.4, RL.1, RL.2, RL.3, RL.4 Step 6: Based on the passage above, answer the questions as either True or False and write a short sentence to explain your answer. 1. Mickey Mouse didn’t debut in the 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie. True False 2. After Steamboat Willie and Fantasia, Mickey became one of the world’s best-known cartoon characters. Journal of Religion & Society Volume 6 (2004) ISSN 1522-5658 David, Mickey Mouse, and the Evolution of an Icon1 Lowell K. Handy, American Theological Library Association Abstract The transformation of an entertaining roguish figure to an institutional icon is investigated with respect to the figures of Mickey Mouse and the biblical King David. Using the three-stage evolution proposed by R. Brockway, the figures of Mickey and David are shown to pass through an initial entertaining phase, a period of model behavior, and a stage as icon. The biblical context for these shifts is basically irretrievable so the extensive materials available for changes in the Mouse provide sufficient information on personnel and social forces to both illuminate our lack of understanding for changes in David while providing some comparative material for similar development. Introduction [1] One can perceive a progression in the development of the figure of David from the rather unsavory character one encounters in the Samuel narratives, through the religious, righteous king of Chronicles, to the messianic abstraction of the Jewish and Christian traditions.2 The movement is a shift from “trickster,” to “Bourgeoisie do-gooder,” to “corporate image” proposed for the evolution of Mickey Mouse by Robert Brockway.3 There are, in fact, several interesting parallels between the portrayals of Mickey Mouse and David, but simply a look at the context that produced the changes in each character may help to understand the visions of David in three surviving biblical textual traditions in light of the adaptability of the Mouse for which there is a great deal more contextual data to investigate.

Winter 2015 • Volume24 • Number4 If Disney Files Magazine was a grocery store tabloid, the headline on this edition’s cover may read: Giant Reptile to Terrorize China! Of course, we’d never resort to such sensationalism, even if we are ridiculously excited about the imposing star of the Roaring Rapids attraction in the works for Shanghai Disneyland (pages 3-8). We take ourselves far too seriously for such nonsense. Wait a minute. What am I saying? This isn’t exactly a medical journal, and anyone who’s ever read the fine print at the bottom of this page knows that, if there’s one thing we embrace in theDisney Files newsroom, it’s nonsense! So at the risk of ending our pursuit of a Pulitzer (close as we were), I introduce this issue with a series of headlines crafted with all the journalistic integrity of rags reporting the births of alien babies, celebrity babies…and alien-celebrity babies. Get Your Free 150 MB Website Now! THE SKILL OF LYING, THE ART OF DECEIT The Disney Bloodline The Illuminati have refined the art of deception far beyond what the common man has imagined. The very life & liberty of humanity requires the unmasking of their deceptions. That is what this book is about. Honesty is a necessary ingredient for any society to function successfully. Deception has become a national pastime, starting with our business and political leaders and cascading down to the grass roots. The deceptions of the Illuminati's mind-control may be hidden, but in their wake they are leaving tidal waves of distrust that are destroying America. While the CIA pretend to have our nations best interest at heart, anyone who has seriously studied the consequences of deception on a society will tell you that deception will seriously damage any society until it collapses. Lies seriously damage a community, because trust and honesty are essential to communication and productivity. Trust in some form is a foundation upon which humans build relationships. When trust is shattered human institutions collapse. If a person distrusts the words of another person, he will have difficulty also trusting that the person will treat him fairly, have his best interests at heart, and refrain from harming him. With such fears, an atmosphere of death is created that will eventually work to destroy or wear down the cooperation that people need. The millions of victims of total mind- control are stripped of all trust, and they quietly spread their fears and distrust on a subconscious level throughout society.

  • Individualism in Cold War America and Disney's the Mickey Mouse Club
University of Wyoming Know Thyself: Individualism in Cold War America and Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club Leah Byrnes Honors Capstone Project Susan Aronstein 16 December 2016 Byrnes 1 “Know Thyself, a wise old Greek once said. Know Thyself. Now what does this mean, boys and girls? It means be what you are. Don’t try to be Sally or Johnny or Fred next door; be yourself. God doesn’t want a tree to be a waterfall, or a flower to be a stone. God gives each of us a special talent. God wants some of us to become scientists, some of us to become artists, some of us to become firemen and doctors and trapeze artists. And He gives each of us the special talents to become these things, provided we work to develop them. We must work, boys and girls. So: Know Thyself. Learn to understand your talents and then work to develop them. That’s the way to be happy.” - Jimmie Dodd, 1955 Introduction I could spell Mickey Mouse before I could read or write. Somehow, either through one of my beloved Disney CDs or my grandmother’s singing, I had heard The Mickey Mouse Club theme song before I even knew which show it belonged to. Many of the lyrics I did not care about and easily forgot, but the tune stuck with me as I grew older, as did the spelling of my favorite mouse’s name: “M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E.” Even though I grew up in the 90s, traces of Disney’s early works had survived the passage of time and ingrained themselves into my memory.

Goofy is a tall, anthropomorphic dog, and typically wears a turtle neck and vest, with pants, shoes, white gloves, and a tall hat originally designed as a rumpled fedora. Goofy is a close friend of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and is one of Disney's most popular characters. He is normally characterized as extremely clumsy and dimwitted, yet this interpretation isn't always definitive; occasionally Goofy is shown as intuitive and clever, albeit in his own unique, eccentric way. Goofy debuted in animated cartoons, starting in 1932 with Mickey's Revue. Goofy also starred at his first solo cartoon called Goofy and Wilbur which was directed by Dick Huemer and first released on March 17, 1939. The short featured Goofy fishing with the help of Wilbur, his pet grasshopper. Originally known as Dippy Dawg, the character is more commonly known simply as "Goofy," a name used in his short film series. In his 1950s persona, Goofy was called George Geef, or G. G. Geef, implying that "Goofy" was merely a nickname. In Goofy Gymnastics (1949) he fills out a coupon with the name James Boyd.Sources from the Goof Troop continuity give the character's full name as Goofy Goof, or G.
