1 Discussion on the Popularity of Mickey Mouse

I. Introduction

Mickey Mouse is the most famous and significant animated in the world. Its popularity is not less than any other characters like . It also has a large number of fans from kids to the aged. If you query someone who is Mickey Mouse, he or she would answer you with no doubt and immediately associate with this big mouse which has obvious two big ears and cute appearance. Besides, people would connect Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney as well.

II. Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is a character created by Walt Disney. He is not only famous but also beloved by millions of people in the world. He is an anthropomorphic mouse and typically wears red shorts, large yellow shoes, and white gloves. His special features make people very easily to remember him.

1 Origins of Mickey Mouse

"It all started with a mouse!" was a saying that Mr. Walt liked to say the most. However, before the Mickey Mouse was created, Walt Disney had created a series of . In 1927, Walt Disney created a well-known cartoon named" " which was very popular and got many select responses from the audiences at that time. In February 1928, Walt Disney was filled with a great confidence for negotiating the contract of "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" with the publisher named , but to his surprise, Charles Mintz told him a cruel truth that he had purchased the whole staff who worked behind the curtain. Thus, Walt Disney could not keep having the cartoon "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" anymore. With a deeply betrayal experience, on his way backed home, he conceived another new character who is a big black mouse. As soon as he created, he named it "Mortimer Mouse", but his wife, Lillian, gave it a better name "Mickey Mouse".

2 The Companions of Mickey Mouse

Mickey has lots of friends in his cartoons and movies. They play different roles in his life. These characters include Goofy, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, etc. They become a great part in the cartoons of Mickey Mouse and make the cartoons very successful.

2-1 Goofy (高飛)

Goofy is a dog. He is one of the best friends of Mickey Mouse. With a pure heart, ridiculous behavior, easygoing personality and a sense of humor, he is the tallest role in the cartoon that always has some adventures with Mickey Mouse. He also plays a good farther in the cartoon and has a son named Max. Goofy first appearance was in short cartoon "Mickey's Revue" on May 25, 1932.

2-2 Donald Duck (唐老鴨)

Donald Duck made his own debut in the cartoon "The Wise Little Hen" on June 9, 1934. His uniquely fiery temper endeared him to the audiences and soon was placed in the cartoon "Orphan's Benefit" with Mickey Mouse. He is a white duck with a yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet. He typically wears a sailor suit with a cap and a black or red bow tie. His biggest feature is his special voice which is always unintelligible.

2-3 Minnie Mouse (米妮)

Minnie was designed in the fashion of a "flapper" girl. She was so probably intended to follow the trends of youth culture, such as liking the color red. She often has a big red bow on her head and dresses skirt which has many dots on it. She not only presented Mickey Mouse's girlfriend but also become a good companion. She is a good fellow of Daisy Duck and Clarabelle Cow.

2-4 Daisy Duck (黛西)

As Minnie is Mickey's girlfriend, Daisy is Donald's. Daisy is a white duck, but has large eyelashes and ruffled tail feathers to suggest a skirt. She is often seen wearing a hair bow, blouse, and high-heeled shoes. She usually shows a strong affinity towards Donald, although she is often characterized as being more sophisticated than him. She is also shown to be more casuistic and intelligent than Donald.

2-5 Clarabelle Cow (克羅拉貝拉)

Clarabelle is a one of Minnie Mouse's best friends . She is a kind-hearted woman who always wears a colorful blouse and dress like Daisy. Although she is just a small cameos and very rarely seen in today, she still occupies a big part of Mickey Mouse's cartoons.

2-6 Pluto (布魯托)

Pluto is a yellow pet dog of Mickey Mouse. He is not anthropomorphic beyond some characteristics such as facial utterance. He is normally a non-speaking character and generally a cheerful and adventurous dog. He is also the character that accompanies with Mickey Mouse in most time. Although he can't speak, he vocalizes in barks and grunts to elaborate his ideas.

It goes without saying that Mickey Mouse attracts the whole world's attention. Not only children but also adults are crazy about this popular cartoon character.

1 Engulfing the World

As the technology becomes more progressive, cartoon become more popular in the world. Mickey Mouse turns into a big whirlwind and engulfs the world. Nowadays, Mickey Mouse has become a part of our lives. Almost all the people have watched Mickey Mouse in their childhood. Since , 1928, the first sound short cartoon "" was showed in New York and people were fascinated by this small mouse which had two big round ears and cute face. At that time, people forgot their economic troubles transitorily after watching this cartoon and that was why it became a sensation in the New York. No sooner, Mickey Mouse became a famous superstar and the cartoon "Steamboat Willie" successfully obtains the special award of Oscar in 1932.

Mickey Mouse is so vivid, cute and vigorous that most of the children love him. His unique characteristic makes him be a charming guy and deeply penetrates to children's mind. In the cartoon, Mickey Mouse is pretty simple that children can easily realize and enjoy. His anthropomorphic trait makes people tend to be empathized. Mickey Mouse is filled with imaginative ideas, queer behaviors and childlike conversations which attract children a lot because it can greatly satisfy the curiosity and creativity of them. Compares with some other cartoons, it is not based on violence or sexes that parents can feel safe to have their children watch this entertaining TV program. Although Mickey Mouse is just an unreal character in the cartoon, it gives us a great happiness that is unprecedented.

3 Being Popular Among Adults

Mickey Mouse's cartoon series have accompanied many people for a long time. When some adults watch to this cartoon, they can refresh their mind and recall their memories. Besides, they can feel cheerful and sweet. Most of them can't resist Mickey Mouse's attractive because this little mouse occupies a lot in their childhood memories. Therefore, some adults are very crazy about the Mickey Mouse as before.

This famous cartoon character caused a great influence on many fields such as politics, economics and the public's lives. Undoubtedly, its effect is much bigger than a cartoon character.

Mickey Mouse plays a central role in the Walt Disney Company. Because of Mickey Mouse's success, Walt Disney Company can expand its scale and then become the biggest animation company in the world. In addition to manufacture the animations, Walt Disney Company builds the first in California in 1955 and has the Mickey Mouse be the symbol of Disneyland. In this amazing amusement park, a popular activity with guests is getting to meet and pose for photographs with the mouse. Thus, when walking in the Disneyland, you can always see the Mickey Mouse everywhere or see three circles together which stand for Mickey Mouse.

2 Economic Impact

There are numerous products of Mickey Mouse in the world including toys, books, video games, clothes, daily appliances, etc. There are also many special stores of Mickey Mouse establishes in many countries. Because of these products, they create billion of US dollars income in the world. It is really a big breakthrough of economy and it certificates that Mickey Mouse is very successful. In addition, collecting the products of Mickey Mouse is still very popular in Taiwan. This trend will never pause until the Mickey Mouse disappear.

3 Social Impact

In addition to being used for commodities , Mickey Mouse is utilized in many ways, such as politics and commercials. Besides, people in different areas interpret it in different kinds of meanings.

3-1 Use in Politics

In the United States, protest votes are often made in order to indicate dissatisfaction with the slate of candidates presented on a particular ballot, or to highlight the inadequacies of a particular voting procedure. Since most states' electoral systems do not provide for blank balloting or a choice of "None of the Above", most protest votes take the form of a clearly non-serious candidate's name entered as a write-in vote. Mickey Mouse is often selected for this purpose. Mickey Mouse's name has also been known to appear fraudulently on voter registration lists, most recently in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election.

3-2 Pejorative Use of Mickey's Name

"Mickey Mouse" is a slang expression meaning small-time, amateurish or trivial. In the UK and Ireland, it also means poor quality or counterfeit. However, in parts of Australia it can mean excellent or very good.

V. Conclusion

All in all, Mickey Mouse is the best character in my mind. Whenever we go, we can see it easily shows up in our daily lives. Due to his kindness, innocence and lovely appearance, he still has a great number of faithful fans. Nowadays, Mickey Mouse is not just a cartoon character and he has become a truly famous celebrity. Despite somebody use him in the badness, he still gives us an aspect of optimistic, enthusiastic, humor and positive. Maybe that is why he can always attract a lot of fans in diffident ages. Children like interesting plots and adults can recall their own childhood memories by watching it. The cartoons which have Mickey Mouse in it are very suitable for families watching together. If there is no Mickey Mouse, the Walt Disney Company will not exist and we will not have many cartoons that we can watch now. To sum up, although Mickey Mouse is just a cartoon character, he has affected us a lot and encourages us to find out the purest belief in our spirits.
