Short-Tailed Albatross Recovery Plan U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Short-Tailed Albatross Recovery Plan September 2008 Disclaimer: Recovery plans describe actions which the best scientific information indicates are required to recover and protect listed species. The Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, requires Recovery Plans to be prepared for all listed species whose conservation status would benefit by having such a plan. Recovery plans must incorporate: (1) a description of site-specific actions necessary to achieve conservation and survival of the species; (2) objective, measurable criteria, which, when met, would allow removal of the species from the list; and (3) estimates of the time and costs required to implement measures in the plan. Plans are published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the NMFS, sometimes prepared with the assistance of recovery teams, contractors, state agencies, and others. The recovery plan is an advisory document. It provides a guide, but it does not obligate any party to carry out the actions it describes. The parties involved will consider their available funds and other priorities when deciding whether to fund the tasks and achieve the objectives presented in this recovery plan. Nothing in this plan should be construed as a commitment or requirement that any agency obligate or pay funds in contravention of the Anti-Deficiency Act, 31 U.S.C. 1341, or any other law or regulation. Recovery plans do not necessarily represent the views or the official positions or approval of any individuals or agencies involved in the plan formulation, other than the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They represent the official position of the Fish and Wildlife Service only after they have been signed by the Regional Director. Approved recovery plans are subject to modification as dictated by new information, changes in species status, and the completion of recovery actions.     Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

We examined local movements, home ranges and body condition of wintering Northern Common Eiders Somateria mollissima borealis in Southwest Greenland from late winter until spring migration in 2000 and 2001. At key marine habitats at coastal areas and in the inner fjord system of Nuuk, we implanted 33 Eiders with satellite transmitters and collected Eider carcasses for body condition analyses. Most Eiders exhib- ited strong site fidelity during the study period with a mean 95% home range size of 67.8 km2 and a mean core area (50%) of 8.1 km2. Diurnal movements peaked at dawn and dusk when birds presumably moved between feeding areas and roosting sites. Roosting occurred near day- time activity centres, on average 1.7 km apart. Among birds marked at coastal habitats only between 8% and 29% also used the inner fjord habitats, despite high levels of hunting at the coastal area. Birds that did move to the inner fjord system did not return to the coastal area. These findings accentuate the need for managing wintering Common Eiders in Southwest Greenland also at a local scale, taking site fidelity into account. The body condition of adult fjord birds was either equal or superior to that of coastal birds.

Short-tailed albatross (Phoebastria. albatrus) range most widely throughout Alaska, extensively using the continental shelf break and slope regions of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Archipelago in particular, and the Gulf of Alaska to a lesser extent. Due to small population size, however, short-tailed albatrosses are generally far less prevalent than the other two species. Black-footed albatrosses (P. nigripes) are most abundant in the Gulf of Alaska, and in late summer near some Aleutian passes, occupying foraging habitat similar to short-tailed albatrosses.

The IPOA-Seabirds stipulates that countries with longline fisheries (conducted by their own or foreign vessels) or a fleet that fishes elsewhere should carry out an assessment of these fisheries to determine if a bycatch problem exists and, if so, to determine its extent and nature. If a problem is identified, countries should adopt a National Plan of Action – Seabirds for reducing the incidental catch of seabirds in their fisheries. The diet of winter-breeding Great-winged Petrels Pterodroma macroptera was studied at sub-Antarctic Marion Island, Prince Edward Islands, southern Indian Ocean in August–October 1991 by multiple stomach flushing of weighed chicks after parental feeding. The Great-winged Petrel at Marion Island may be described as a cephalopod specialist, because squid formed the larger part of the diet in terms of diversity, frequency of occurrence and contribution by mass, and were the largest prey items taken. Fish and crustaceans formed relatively minor parts of the diet. These findings are broadly in accord with those of three previous quantitative studies at the same and other localities. Both aqueous-phaseand lipid-phase markers passedthrough the gastrointestinaltract without being metabolized.Label recoveries from the two specieswere statisticallyindistinguishable. Mean retention time was significantlylonger for lipid-phasecomponents than for aqueous- phasecomponents in both species.In the petrel, mean retention time for lipid-phaseand for aqueous-phasewas significantlylonger than in the penguin. Interspecificdifferences in retention were largely the result of differing ratesof gastricemptying. Both markersemptied rapidly from the proventriculusand gizzard of the penguins,while in giant-petrelsthe lipid- phase was retained for extended periods in the stomach.Differential transit of lipid and aqueousphases coupled with the lower rate of gastricemptying in giant-petrelchicks provides a physiologicalbasis for accumulationof dietary lipids in the proventriculus. The large, distensibleproventriculus and the ventral positionof the pyloric valve relative to the gizzard and proventriculusare morphologicaltraits which enhance the formation and retention of stomachoils.
