Printed in Sweden by ESSELTE AB STOCKHOLM Foreword Forest Economy in the U.S.S.R. is a special study of the forestry sector of the Soviet economy. As such it makes a further contribution to the studies undertaken in recent years to elucidate the means and ends in Soviet planning; also it attempts to assess the competitive potentialities of the U.S.S.R. in international trade. Soviet studies now command a very great interest and are being undertaken at some twenty universities and research institutes mainly in the United States, the United Kingdoin and the German Federal Republic. However, it would seem that the study of the development of the forestry sector has riot received the detailed attention given to other fields. In any case, there have not been any analytical studies published to date elucidating fully the connection between forestry and the forest industries and the integration of both in the economy as a whole. Studies of specific sections have appeared from time to time, but I have no knowledge of any previous study which gives a complete picture of the Soviet forest economy and which could faci- litate the marketing policies of the western world, being undertaken at any university or college. -

The intensity of bank downcutting is controlled by a number of natural factors. Human economic activity in the drainage basin also exerts an important influence on the pattern of channel migration. Key words bank erosion; channel morphological type; channel shift; factors of channel processes; meandering; monitoring; Udmurt Republic INTRODUCTION AND STUDY AREA A network of numerous rivers belonging to the Kama and Vyatka river basins, dissect the plain territory of the Udmurt Respublic (UR). The most widespread type of river channel morphology is meandering. A survey of morphometrical and morphological characteristics of river channels has been carried out using published topographic maps (scale 1:25 000, 1:50 000, 1:100 000) to distinguish the type of meander. Rivers of Hortonian orders 2-4 have been chosen for this survey. The main aim of the work presented is a geographical analysis of morphodynamic river channel type distribution within the UR and determination of channel lateral migration rates (Fig. 1). Influence of natural and environmental factors on river channel dynamics is also discussed. Two main morphological types of river channels are distinguished within the region according to their pattern and tendency of lateral shift: relatively straight and meandering channels (Chalov et al.9 1998). -

The paper investigates threats to the relations between local industrial enterprises and consumer market retailers, as well as the place of chain structures in this sector of the economy. To achieve the objectives of the study, food industry and consumer market were analyzed statistically, and the activities of chain structures were researched in-field. It discovers the main trends of the regional consumer market, the impact of retail chains on the changes, and especially the effect of federal and international chains on the structure and development of the consumer market and on the way local manufacturers operate. Dynamics of Eh changes in the rivers of the Republic of Tatarstan and surrounding areas as well as natural and artificial water reservoirs, including basin-coolers of energy facilities are researched in this article. Conducted full-size data and experiments made it possible to establish the Eh sensitivity in relation to the pH. In the article has showed the possibility of introducing Eh indicator into the assessment of water quality on the assumption of further consideration and detail. -
Mechanisms of Karst Breakdown Formation in the Gypsum Karst of the Fore-Ural Region, Russia (From Observations in the Kungurskaja Cave)

Speleo l. , 31(1/4)2002: 89-114 MECHANISMS OF KARST BREAKDOWN FORMATION IN THE GYPSUM KARST OF THE FORE-URAL REGION, RUSSIA (FROM OBSERVATIONS IN THE KUNGURSKAJA CAVE) Yjacheslav ANDREJCHUK and Alexander KLIMCHOUK ABSTRACT The fore-Ural is a classical region of intrastratal gypsum karst. The intensive development of karst in the Permian gypsums and anhydrites causes numerous practical problems, the subsi dence hazard being the most severe. Mechanisms of karst breakdown formation were studied in detail in the Kunguskaya Cave area. The cave and its setting are characteristic to the region and, being a site of detailed sta tionary studies for many years, the cave represents a convenient location for various karst and speleological investigations. Breakdown structures related to cavities of the Kungurskaya Cave type develop by two mech anisms: gravitational (sagging and fall-in of the ceilings of cavities) and filtrational/gravita tional (crumbling and fall-in of the ceilings of vertical solution pipes, facilitated by percola tion). The former implies upward stoping of the breakout roof and cessation of the process at some height above the floor of the cave due to complete infilling by fallen clasts. This mech anism cannot generate surface deformation where the overburden thickness exceeds a certain value. The latter mechanism implies that breakdown will almost inevitably express itself at the surface, most commonly as a sudden collapse, even where the thickness of the overburden is large. These mechanisms result in different appearance, distribution and further evolution of the respective surface forms, so that subsidence hazard assessment should be performed dif ferently for these types of breakdown. -

World War I and civil war led to conscription into the tsarist, Bolshevik, and anti-Bolshevik armies, removing over fourteen million young male peasants from their villages. Revolution destroyed the centuries-old peasant-landlord relationship, redistributed land among the peasantry, democratized the countryside, and allowed villages to install autonomous governing bodies. War and social turmoil also brought massive famine and government requisitioning of grain and possessions, killing thousands of peasants and destroying their means of existence. The Bolshevik victory, a defining event of the twentieth century, was ultimately determined by the temporary support of the peasantry, the vast majority of Russia's population. This project studies the interaction between peasants and government in the Russian province of Viatka from the beginning of World War I to the end of the Civil War in 1921. In doing so, it will advance how scholars understand the nature of the Revolution, peasant-state relations, and peasant society and culture in general. On the ii one hand, I analyze Russia’s changes through a study of peasant responses to tsarist, Provisional Government, and Soviet recruitment into the armed forces; requisitioning of grain and possessions; and establishment of local administrations. -

Read Full License Page 1/22 Abstract The territory of Udmurtia located in the European part of Russia between the River Volga and the Urals was chosen for assessment of its eco-geomorphological conditions, because it’s well-developed region (ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine-building and oil production) with a quite high population density. A combined approach, based on standard geomorphological methods (eld work, remote sensing and GIS technologies) and analysis of time-space population distribution, was used. The region is located in a relatively comfortable eco-geomorphological conditions: areas with comfortable and relatively comfortable conditions make up 63% of the study region, while areas with poorly comfortable and uncomfortable conditions, where the relief worsens ecological conditions, account for 37%. The most acute eco-geomorphological and ecological problems are characteristic of southeastern Udmurtia, where the relief contributes to a poor ecological situation. 57% of rural settlements are located in areas with comfortable and relatively comfortable eco-geomorphological conditions. Hence, 43% of settlements are located in areas with less comfortable conditions. -
