ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: WAR AND RESISTANCE: THE PHILIPPINES, 1942-1944 James Kelly Morningstar, Doctor of History, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Jon T. Sumida, History Department What happened in the Philippine Islands between the surrender of Allied forces in May 1942 and MacArthur’s return in October 1944? Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return. -

GALEDECEMBER 2010Ó VOL. 1 NO.N 1 10 PAGES Official publication of the Cavite Studies Center • DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY-DASMARIÑAS 12th Annual Seminar on Cavite history and culture Disaster,calamity awareness discussed To assess the geographical condition of the province and to single out the preparedness capacity of Caviteños in terms of catastrophe and calamities, the Cavite Studies Center (CSC) convened its 12th annual seminar on history and culture entitled Desastres y Calamidades: Cavite and the Signs of the Times. The event took place at the Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite on September 24. Public school teachers from Kawit and Dasmariñas and local government officials of Kawit, Noveleta, Naic, Ternate, Trece Martires, and Imus attended the seminar. The opening ceremonies Before the lecture proper, Kawit Mayor Reynaldo ‘Tik’ Aguinaldo commended the CSC regarding the importance of holding such activity. This, accordingly, will give the audience the ability to determine the actions to be done once a calamity or a disaster happens. Former Prime Minister Cesar EA Virata stressed that population growth which contribute to environmental and garbage problems is one factor in the occurrence of calamities. He even suggested some measures such as education and concentrated efforts for a cleaner surroundings that Caviteños have to observe in order to lessen the problem. CSC Director Aquino Garcia, on the other hand, delivered the conference overview. A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. ―Textual Mobilities: Diaspora, Migration, Transnationalism and Multiculturalism‖ | Lullaby of Diasporic Time: On Lav Diaz‟s A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery Christian Jil R. Benitez Ateneo de Manila University Philippines [email protected] Abstract Lav Diaz is a Filipino independent filmmaker notable as a key figure in the contemporary slow cinema movement. Of his oeuvre, one of the longest is A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (Filipino: Hele sa Higawang Hapis), a 2016 epic film that runs for 8 hours, orchestrating narratives derived from what are conveniently sung as mythology (i.e., Jose Rizal‘s El filibusterismo and Philippine folklore) and history (i.e., Philippine history and artifacts). The movie competed in the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Alfred Bauer Prize. This success has earned Diaz‘s the spotlight in the Filipino mainstream culture, enabling the film to be distributed to and showcased in mainstream platforms, albeit primarily garnering attention from the Filipino audience for its runtime and international attention. The movement of the film, as a text, from the local Philippines toward the international and returning home, incurs in it a textuality that disrupts the phenomenology of time diasporically, scatteringly: that as much as its 8-hour languor ―opens new perspective in the cinematic arts‖ according to the international rendition of this time, it is also the 8-hour whose value in the Philippine time is that of a day‘s labor, and thus the exoticization of its cinematic experience as a ―challenge,‖ having to endure an entire working day of slow cinematography. This diaspora of time is of no cacophony; on the contrary, it is the lullaby, sorrowful and mysterious, that finally slows Diaz in to become a filmmaker attuned to both the spaces of the local and the international. -

The Attractiveness of the Tridentine Mass by Alfons Cardinal Stickler Cardinal Alfons Stickler, retired prefect of the Vatican Archives and Library, is normally reticent. Not so during his trip to the New York area in May [1995]. Speaking at a conference co-sponsored by Fr. John Perricon's ChistiFideles and Howard Walsh's Keep the Faith, the Cardinal scored Catholics within the fold who have undermined the Church—and in the final third of his speech made clear his view that the "Mass of the post-Conciliar liturgical commission" was a betrayal of the Council fathers. The robust 84-year-old Austrian scholar, a Salesian who served as peritus to four Vatican II commissions (including Liturgy), will celebrate his 60th anniversary as a priest in 1997. Among his many achievements: The Case for Clerical Celibacy (Ignatius Press), which documents that the celibate priesthood was mandated from the earliest days of the Church. Cardinal Stickler lives at the Vatican. The Tridentine Mass means the rite of the Mass which was fixed by Pope Pius V at the request of the Council of Trent and promulgated on December 5, 1570. This Missal contains the old Roman rite, from which various additions and alterations were removed. When it was promulgated, other rites were retained that had existed for at least 200 years. Therefore, is more correct to call this Missal the liturgy of Pope Pius V. Faith and Liturgy From the very beginning of the Church, faith and liturgy have been intimately connected. A clear proof of this can be found in the Council of Trent itself. -

Before the Consecration The Church, gathered around the pope and in union with the saints, presents the offerings to God and prays that they are accepted to become the Body/Blood of Christ. The Consecration ΑThis is not a prayer: it is the recital of what took place at the Last Supper: the priest does again what the Lord did, speaks the Lord=s own words.≅ After the Consecration The Church offers Christ=s own sacrifice anew to God, to bring the Church together in peace, save those in Purgatory and Αus sinners≅ , so that Christ may give honor to the Father. -

Effective September 14, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI loosened the restrictions on the use of the 1962 Missal, such that the special permission of the bishop is no longer required. This action was taken because, as universal shepherd, His Holiness has a heart for the unity of the Church, and sees the option of allowing a more generous use of the Mass of 1962 as a way to foster that unity and heal any breaches that may have occurred after Vatican II. -

THE EVOLVING DEFENCE SYSTEMS AT THE INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNALS SPEECH BY FRANÇOIS ROUX, HEAD OF DEFENCE OFFICE AT THE SPECIAL TRIBUNAL FOR LEBANON Allow me to begin my speech with a thought for the late Laity Kama: we are all aware of the exceptional contribution he made to this Tribunal in his role as President. His death came as a shock to us, the only equivalent being the shock we felt following the sudden death of another great President, the President of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Antonio Cassese. I find it comforting to think that they are both together in Heaven, drafting the Last Judgment. I also include in my thoughts all those who have been associated with this Tribunal over the past twenty years and who have since died, with a special mention for the former President of the Kigali Bar, Jean Haguma, who was my co-Counsel in the case of Joseph Nzabirinda, in which we pleaded guilty. I also welcome the presence of my former and loyal investigator, Philippe Bimenymanya. For the old-timers here, if you remember, Philippe is the survivor, the miracle man who survived the accident involving a Kenya Airways aircraft which crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from Abidjan where Philippe was on assignment for the Bagilishema defence team. When the ICTR was first set up, the Defence did not exist as a separate institution, we were “managed” by the Registry. As President Mose said, the Defence was therefore not part of the Coordination Committee, for example, which was set up to rationalise proceedings, nor was it part of any other structure within the Tribunal. -

These range from solemn novena to ecstatic procession, quaint poem-and-flower offering to lilting song and dance, arduous pilgrimage to carefree fiesta. These may take place on land or river, country shrine or city basilica, small community inroad or wide, expansive boulevard. But all are marked by a massive outpouring of affection and tenderness. The cult of Mary in the Philippines has grown from simple folk expression in early times to an imposing display of organized faith in the colonial era, backed by the Church itself and the cabildo or city government (Summers 1998 204), and in more recent times, propped up by a network of wealthy patrons, schools, commercial establishments, and an assortment of civic, artistic and religious organizations. For a people who call themselves in a Marian hymn, “un pueblo amante de María” (a people who love Mary), and who address Mary as “Mama” in such familial terms, these rites represent distinct personal relationships with the Mother of God, hence the variety of expression. This paper focuses on Our Lady of Antipolo, one of the most popular and historic shrines in the country. Our Lady of Antipolo Antipolo is a small town southeast of Manila, situated on a foothill of the Sierra Madre mountain range in Luzon. -
