Arsenal FC have made a perfect start in Group B but now face an unbeaten FC Schalke 04 side. While Arsenal opened with a 2-1 win at Montpellier Hérault SC and a 3-1 home defeat of Olympiacos FC, Schalke were 2-1 victors against the Greek side in Piraeus on matchday one but then conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2 at home to ten-man Montpellier. Previous meetings • The teams met in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League group stage, when the coaches were as they are today – Arsène Wenger and Huub Stevens. Arsenal won 3-2 at home but lost 3-1 in Gelsenkirchen. • The teams for the game at Highbury on 19 September 2001 were: Arsenal: Seaman, Vieira, Keown, Ljungberg, Lauren, Parlour, Van Bronckhorst, Grimandi, Pirès (Inamoto 76), Wiltord (Bergkamp 72), Henry (Upson 90). Schalke: Reck, Van Kerckhoven, Hajto, Möller (Djordjević 72), Böhme (Mulder 82), Van Hoogdalem, Wałdoch, Vermant (Asamoah 54), Oude-Kamphuis, Mpenza, Agali. • Arsenal faced Borussia Dortmund in last season's group stage, when a 2-1 victory extended their run of successive home wins against visitors to six. They have recorded nine home victories overall, with one draw and one defeat – going down 3-2 to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup first round. • Schalke last visited England for the 2010/11 semi-final second leg against Manchester United FC in 2010/11, a 4-1 defeat compounding a 2-0 home reverse. Their record in England is W0 D1 L4. The only time Schalke have avoided defeat was their first visit, a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in a 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round tie they won 4-3 on aggregate. Match background • Arsenal are taking part in the group stage for the 15th campaign in a row. In 2011/12 Wenger's side departed in the round of 16 for the second season running, having won four of their five home matches, play-offs included. It was the 12th successive time they had made it through the group and only the second campaign since 2006/07 that they had failed to reach the quarter-finals or better. • Arsenal are unbeaten in 16 UEFA Champions League home matches, play-offs included, since a 3-1 reverse by Manchester United in the 2008/09 semi-finals. That is their only defeat in their last 44 home games in the competition, with the remaining matches yielding 33 victories and ten draws. Arsenal have not lost at home to non-English opposition in the competition in 45 games, since a 3-0 defeat by FC Internazionale Milano at Highbury in September 2003. • Schalke are making their fifth UEFA Champions League appearance and when they were last involved, in 2010/11, they recovered from a 1-0 defeat at Olympique Lyonnais on matchday one to win seven of their next nine fixtures, with the other two drawn, before those two losses to Manchester United. Team ties • Per Mertesacker played for (2003-2006) and SV Werder Bremen (2006-2011). He made 12 appearances against Schalke, putting through his own net in the 2-2 draw with Hannover on 20 March 2004. Lukas Podolski faced Schalke ten times with 1. FC Köln and FC Bayern München, scoring four goals. • Tomáš Rosický was at Dortmund from 2001 to 2006 and played 149 Bundesliga games, scoring 20 goals. • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Thomas Vermaelen were team-mates at AFC Ajax from January 2006 to January 2009. • Podolski and Mertesacker are Germany team-mates of Benedikt Höwedes, Lewis Holtby and . Mertesacker and Christoph Metzelder were Germany's centre-backs in the 1-0 final defeat by Spain at UEFA EURO 2008, Podolski and Spain's also featuring. • Tranquillo Barnetta and Johan Djourou play together for Switzerland. Carl Jenkinson and Teemu Pukki have played together in Finland's Under-21 team. • Oliver Giroud scored for France in a 2-1 friendly victory against Germany in Bremen on 29 February 2012. Höwedes came on for the home side at the interval. FARE Action Week • Matchday three of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League will contribute to the fight against all forms of discrimination in football stadiums as UEFA gives its full support to Europe's biggest anti-discrimination campaign – the FARE Action Week. Forty matches across the competitions on 23, 24 and 25 October will restate UEFA's commitment to ensuring that European football is free of racism, intolerance and xenophobia.

Arsenal FC: Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC • Not the most successful of players, Arsène Wenger has more than made up for that as a coach, turning Arsenal into one of Europe's top teams. • Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987. • Within a year Monaco scooped the French title and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. He led the side to 1991 French Cup glory, then the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup final where they lost to SV Werder Bremen. After reportedly turning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed huge success with Grampus Eight. • Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the Premier League in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray AŞ but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2003/04 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since 1889 to negotiate an English top-flight season unbeaten. • Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only for FC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigated by Wenger.

FC Schalke 04: Huub Stevens Date of birth: 29 November 1953 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: SC , PSV Eindhoven Coaching career: Roda JC (twice), FC Schalke 04 (twice), Hertha BSC Berlin, 1. FC Köln, Hamburger SV, PSV Eindhoven, FC Salzburg • An uncompromising defender, Stevens left Fortuna Sittard for PSV in 1975, winning three Dutch titles and the 1977/78 UEFA Cup, also picking up 18 caps for the Netherlands before retiring in 1986. • Initially head of PSV's youth department, Stevens took up his first head coach position with Roda in 1993, finishing runners-up to AFC Ajax in 1994/95. • Lured to Schalke in October 1996, he led the club to their first European trophy in his first season, winning the 1996/97 UEFA Cup. Second place in the Bundesliga in 2001 represented the team's highest finish in 14 years and they won the German Cup in the same season. • Coached Hertha and won the second division title with Köln before heading home to rejoin Roda. Stevens returned to Germany with Hamburg in February 2007, easing their relegation concerns, but was tempted back to another former club, PSV, in summer 2008, his six-month reign ending with his resignation the following January. • That summer he signed a two-year contract with ambitious Salzburg; his side were unique in winning all six of their games in the inaugural UEFA Europa League group stage. Dismissed by Salzburg in April 2011, having won the Austrian Bundesliga the previous season, he returned to Schalke five months later.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only two teams have failed to score in a group stage: RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2004/05 and Maccabi Haifa FC in 2009/10. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest goals against total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
