The HM Institute and Museum for War History has commissioned a travelling exhibition for the distinguished event, presenting the life of Ferenc Rákóczi II, the key events of the freedom fight of Rákóczi, and the armed forces of the freedom fight: the Kuruc and the Labanc. Opening ceremony: 24 July (Wednesday), 12:45 Wine tasting and pálinka tasting daily from 18:00 o’clock _________________________________________________________________________________ Krúdy-yard Gastro, wine and pálinka spots where speciality from Kistücsök, Anyukám mondta, Rókusfalvy birtok and Aston Catering can be tasted by participants. Restaurants refurbish the meals and dishes of traditional Hungarian cuisine within the framework of modern street food style, and may quench their thirst from the selection of nine wineries of the Carpathian basin (Southland, Highland, Transylvania and Little-Hungary), as well as may taste the best of Panyola Pálinkas. Try the electric bike on a trip to the Saint Anne Lake or take a trek to the Apor-bastion, the Sólyomkő or the Tower Stones with Hargita Outdoor! Bicycle tours start daily at 10:00 and 15:00 o’clock, walks on Friday and Saturday from 11:00 o’clock. Register at the information point in the camp. Camp My piece of art on the wall, organised by MANK Festival participants are called upon a common creative workshop to cover a clad surface of one of the guest houses with patterns they like. We provide the paint and the pencil, you bring your creativity! _________________________________________________________________________________ Hungarian inventors travelling exhibition Venue: Community House, Tusnádfürdő, Állomás utca 14/C. The exhibition can be visited between 25 July 2019 and 28 July 2019 daily from 13:00 to 17:00. Various inventions made by Hungarians can be found in many fields of life, including their applications. Their usefulness and widely spread use demonstrate the significance of the contribution Hungarians made to the progress of humanity. The travelling exhibition is compiled from the material of the colourful, excellent quality book, edited by Szabolcs Szilágyi with the title “Hungarian Inventors“. The exhibition offers basic information on 60 outstanding inventors, discoverers, scientists of the past centuries, but about the representatives of the contemporary generation and their inventions just as well in four different languages (Hungarian, German, English and French). The town that used to be known primarily for the onions grown in the region is today visited by tourists for its tourism attractions. The town has a unique architectural heritage as its cityscape dominated by 12 buildings designed by Kossuth Prize holder Imre Makovecz. The most well-known one of these, the one attracting the largest numbers of tourists, is Hagymatikum Spa whose shape illustrates one of the most valuable treasures of the Carpathian Basin, that is, the thermal water gushing out of the depth of the earth. The town treats the participants of the 30th Tusványos event to special local tastes, smells and atmosphere, visitors can taste mangalica ham with onion marmalade and local ewe cheese at the Town’s stand, accompanied by the beautiful flavours of the local Kontyos fruit wines. Very pleasant chats with the town’s representatives about the town will also be on the menu on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so visitors can learn a lot of interesting and new details about the town. _________________________________________________________________________________ House of Hungarians (Magyarság Háza) The House of Hungarians will be offering the following permanent programmes for its visitors: ● How much do you know about Hungary? – a quiz for adults and children ● puzzle games of themes associated with the House of Hungarians, in various sizes ● photos being taken before the House of Hungarians press wall ● try on our Hussar costumes (in sizes for children and adults) ● games: Rubic cube, mechanical puzzles, memory games (as parts of the ‘We, Hungarians’ exhibition ● Those solving the problems or completing the exercises may win small gifts The tent next to the Gábor Betlen tent will be open for visitors daily, between 10.00 and 18.00. _________________________________________________________________________________ Exhibition of Sándor Plugor graphic artist and painter Venue: Transylvanian Centre of Arts (Sepsiszentgyörgy, Olt u. 2.) The bat fauna of the Gömör-Torna Karst region has been studied for several decades, in par ti cu lar that of the Aggtelek Karst (Hungary). The earliest research was mainly conducted in the well-known Baradla cave system, whilst other sites in the region were somewhat neglected. At the end of the 1980s a new research programme started, when studies on house-dwelling bat species and a comparative analysis of results was systematically carried out. These results played an important role in the conservation strategies for the protection of roosts (e.g. in churches). Some of these roosts were of international im por tan ce. During the third period of research, a survey of man-made caverns and of forest-dwelling bat po pu la ti ons began. This research revealed that 26 bat species inhabited the administrative area of the Aggtelek National Park (24 species in the proper area of the national park). These fi gures prove that there is a very rich bat fauna in terms of both species and their populations. The latest faunistical studies and the pro te cti on of these populations have both signifi cantly improved our knowledge on the distribution and occur ren ce of several species.     The Role of Defense Contractors in NATO’s Eastward Expansion By Jeremy Williams Submitted to Central European University Department of International Relations and European Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Michael Merlingen Word Count: 13,470 CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2011 Abstract NATO expansion has been a topic broadly covered by the academic community, with the moves for expansion after the fall of the Soviet Union and, therewith, the collapse of the Warsaw Pact military alliance that pitted the former communist Central and Eastern European states against the American-led West. However, while the academic community has discussed the theoretical motives for this expansion to a great extent, I look at in this thesis the role of a particular entity critical to the expansion of military alliances, defense contractors, in NATO’s expansion to Hungary, as one of the first ex-Warsaw Pact countries to join the Western military alliance. In my analysis, I ultimately identify four hypotheses that help to make inferences and assumptions based on the available data and personal consultation possible with such a niche, and yet highly confidential, topic. His work revealed to the world that folk music exists, is important, and stands as an independent academic discipline. I argue that Bartók’s efforts established the field of ethnomusicology because he was one of the first musicians to branch into the study of ethnic music by travelling to collect samples of music, by aurally recording and transcribing folk-tunes, by re-writing these songs into understandable notation with new harmonization, and by then employing this folk-style in his own original compositions.

I focus on musicians working in professional folk music, a field that has strong, historic associations with collectivism. This field consists of folk festivals, music camps, and other venues at which musicians from a range of countries, affiliated with broad labels such as ‘Celtic,’ ‘Nordic,’ ‘bluegrass,’ or ‘fiddle music,’ interact. Various collaborative connections emerge from such encounters, creating socio-musical networks that cross boundaries of genre, region, and nation. These interactions create a social space that has received little attention in ethnomusicology. While there is an emerging body of literature devoted to specific folk festivals in the context of globalization, few studies have examined the relationship between the transnational character of this circuit and the changing sensibilities, music, and social networks of particular musicians who make a living on it. To this end, I examine the career trajectories of three interrelated musicians who have worked in folk music: the late Canadian fiddler Oliver Schroer (1956-2008), the ii Irish flute player Nuala Kennedy, and the Italian organetto player Filippo Gambetta.
